Unit 1 Introduction to Simulation (06 Hrs)
Need for systems Modelling, Systems and system environment; Components of a system;
Discrete and continuous systems; Model of a system; Types of Models: Continuous time
models; Discrete time models; Discrete event models. Steps in a Simulation Study,
Simulation languages When simulation is the appropriate tool; Advantages and
disadvantages of Simulation; Areas of application.
Unit 2 Mathematical Modeling of Continuous Systems (08 Hrs)
Purpose of Mathematical Modeling, Derivation of mathematical model: based on physical
laws, based on experiments, based on dimensional analysis. Methods are based on
Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), sets of n first-order ordinary differential
equations, Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), Integral equation, Laplace transforms
etc. that are used for mathematical description of real-world systems.
Unit 3 Mathematical Modeling of Discrete Systems (05 Hrs)
Fixed time steps Vs Event to Event model, representation of time, generation of arrival
patterns, simulating randomness, generation of random numbers & non-uniformly
distributed random numbers, Monte Carlo Computation Vs Stochastic simulation.
Unit 4 Modeling of Mechanical Systems (08 Hrs)
Modeling of Translational Mechanical systems, Rotational Mechanical systems,
‘Mechanical linkages, Particle Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Thermal Dynamics &
‘Mechanical system building blocks.
Unit 5 Statistical Models in Simulation (05 Hrs)
Review of terminology and concepts; Useful statistical models; discrete distributions;
Continuous distributions; Poisson process; Empirical distributions. Applications in
Mechanical Engineering
Unit 6 Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Systems (08 Hrs)
Neural Networks: Basic concepts of Neural Networks, Neural Network Architecture,
Characteristics of Neural Network, Learning Methods
Genetic Algorithms: Basic concepts of Genetic Algorithms, Genetic Modelling.
Fuzzy Logie: Fuzzy versus Crisp sets, Fuzzy Rule based system, Defuzzification
Methods. Application of Fuzzy logic in Washing Machine, Refrigerator, Microwave etc.
