होम िविधः
च वािर शङ्
ृ गा त्रयो अ य पादा द्वे शीष स ह तासो अ य ।
ित्रधा बद्धो वष
ृ भो रोरवीित महो दे वो म यार्ँ आ िववेश ॥
Homa is like an express money transfer. You login to the system, ensure your login
details are encrypted and provide the details of receipient. You get the confirmation
and once done, close the screen and logout. It is the same fire (electricity) that
connects the sender and the receipient.
First original Sanskrit text, second word-by-word meaning, and third how to use it
in the worship.
Now we shall narrate the procedure of fire ritual of the mantra liked by self.
One has to prepare a firepit or an elevated place of the square shape in order to
worship the fire. Firepit could be done by digging the soil or by placing the firebricks
in square shape so that the place inside becomes like a pit. Alternatively one can
make a sthandila a place made elevated by pouring mud or arranging the firebricks
in square shape.
सामा याघ्यर्मप
ु शो य = By the saamaanyaarghya prepared during the pooja, or
by preparing it afresh, तेनावो य = by sprinkling the water from it.
One should sprinkle the water of the saamaanyaarghya prepared during pooja, or
prepared afresh in order to purify the place of fire ritual.

तासु रे खासु ब्र ायमसोम द्रिवि व द्रान ् ष तारीनम स पुिटतान य यर् ||5||
तासु रे खासु = on those lines ब्र ायमसोम द्रिवि व द्रान ् = these devathas
ष तारीनम स पिु टतान य यर् = enclosed by six pranavas at start and namah at the end
are to be worshipd.
The Devathas listed in the sutra are to be worshipped with six seed letters
prefixed and namah word suffixed to their name as below. Worship them
chanting the mantra and offering turmeric rice along the line
सह ािचर्षे दयाय नमः, वि तपूणार्य िशरसे वाहा, उि पु षाय िशखायै वष , धूम यािपने
कवचाय हुं , स िज ाय नेत्रत्रयाय वौष , धनुधरर् ाय अ ाय फ , = with these mantras इित
षडङ्गं िवधाय = thus six limbs well placed तेन शडङ्गेन = by those six limbs
कु डम य यर् = worship the fire pot.
2 ऐं ीं ीं ऐं क्लीं सौः वि तपूणार्य िशरसे वाहा touch the top of the head
4 ऐं ीं ीं ऐं क्लीं सौः धूम यािपने कवचाय हुं touch shoulders with opposite hands

5 ऐं ीं ीं ऐं क्लीं सौः स िज ाय नेत्रत्रयाय वौष eyebrow
तत्रा कोणष कोणित्रकोणा मकं = in the firepit, containing a octagon, hexagon and
triangle अिग्नचक्रं िविलख्य = yantra of fire god drawn पीतायै, ेतायै, अ णायै, कृ णायै,
धूम्रायै, ती ायै, फुिलि ग यै, िचरायै वािल यै नम इित = with these mantras
ित्रकोणम ये = in the triangle व े ः पीठशक्तीः = energies of fire संपू य = being worshipped
तं तमसे रं रजसे सं स वाय आं आ मने अं अ तरा मने पं परमा मने ीं ज्ञाना मने नमः इित = with
these mantras तत्रैवा यचर्येत ् = to be worshipped thereonly.
Now draw octagon, hexagon, and triangle as below, and woship with following
mantras in the triangle clockwise, offering turmeric rice.
ततोजिन यमाणव े ः = there, of the fire being born िपतरौ = parents वागी री-वागी रौ =
brahma and Saraswati पीठे य यर् =been worshiped in the triangle तयोिमर्थन
ु ीभावं
भाविय वा = imagining their union ीं वागी री-वागी रा यां नमः = with these mantra
इित या वा = to be meditated.
In the triangle, worship the parents of fire being born Brahma and Saraswati ,
imagine their union and meditate with the mantra ीं वागी री-वागी रा यां नमः
अरणेः सूयक
र् ा तात ् िद्वजगह
ृ ाद्वा वि मु पाद्य म ृ पात्रे ताम्रपात्रे वा आग्ने यामैशा यां
नैऋ यां वा िनधाय अिग्नशकलं क्र यादांशं नैऋ यां वा िवसायर्
िनरीक्षणप्रोक्षणताडनावकु ठनािदिभः िवशो य ॐ वै ानर जातवेद इहावह लोिहताक्ष
सवर्कमार्िण साधय वाहा इित मूलाधारोद्गतसंिवदं ललाटनेत्रद्वारा िनगर्म य तं
बा ािग्नयुक्तं पातयेत ् ||9||
One should produce the fire by rubbing the firesticks or by magnifying glass or bring
it from the house of a brahmana. Bring it in a mud pot or copper plate with three
wicks lit. The fire should be placed on the south east, northeast or southwest corner
of the firepit. Throw one wick and little of the havi ( food or ghee meant for homa)
to the south east, meaning it is ment for Demons.
Now chanting the moolamantra of choosen diety, look at the fire. Sprinkle little
purified water on to fire. Pat the fire with inscene stick saying mantra ‘phat’ and cover
with the right palm facing down.
Now chant the mantra ॐ वै ानर जातवेद इहावह लोिहताक्ष सवर्कमार्िण साधय वाहा
imagining that the awareness of the mooladhaara is brought out through the
third eye and joined with the fire out side.
कवचम त्रेण = with the mantra hum, इ धनैरा छाद्य = place the fire into firepot and
cover by firewood
Saying mantra ‘hum’ place the fire into the firepot and place the firewould slowly on
topy of it so that it catches fire.
ष तारवाचो नमो म त्रेण = with the mantra of 6 pranavas and namah पंस

जातकमर्-नामकरण-अ नप्राशन-चौल-उपनयन -गोदान-िववाह कमार् यमक

नमः इित िवधाय = do the various rites done as if done for humans.
Offer turmeric rice on to the fire with the following mantras imagining you
are performing these rituals to the just born and now grown fire.

ऐं ीं ीं ऐं क्लीं सौः अ य होमाग्नेः पुंसवनकमर् नमः a ritual expecting a male will born

Sprinkle the water around the firepot at the east (starting from south east to
northeast) अिदतेनुम य व Oh Goddess Aditi, be pleased to approve, south (from
south west to south east) अनुमतेनम
ु य व Oh Goddess Anūmati be pleased to
approve west (from southwest to northwest) सर वतेनम
ु य व Oh Goddess
Saraswati be pleased to approve and north (from northwest to northeast) दे व सिवतः
प्रसव
ु Oh Lord Savitā be pleased to create.
Place four each darbha ( a grass used in rituals) outside of the firepot at east, south,
west and north.
Place Samidha (stick used in fire ritual) on the ground around fire pit in south,
(thinner and medium ) west (Stout and short) and north (thinnest and longest),
leaving the east open.

Homa Vidhi
Place the ghee vessel on the wall of the firepit in front of you. Purify it with chanting
7 times the moola mantra of the main diety of homa. Place the two spoons (sruk &
Sruvam) near the ghee pot. Worship them with flowers etc.
अिभमतवरशिक्तं वि तकाभीितह तं
अिभमतवरशिक्तं वि तकाभीितह तं
नमत कनकमालालङ्कृतांसं कृशानुं = with this prayer इित या वा = pray the fire god.
Meditate of the firegod with above prayer. Three eyed, red coloured matterd hair,
holding white hook, red coloured, sitting on red colour lotus, Holding granting
gesture, weapon called shakti, svastika, protecting gesture by hands, decorated
shoulders with golden garland, the Fire god.
six limbs ित्रकोणे= in the triangle अिग्नम त्रेण = with mantra of agni अिग्नं पूजिय वा
=worshipping the firegod.
िहर यायै कनकायै रक्तायै कृ णायै सुप्रभायै अितरक्तायै बहु पायै नमः इ यग्नेः
स िज ासु मूलशुद्धन
े ा येन स ाहुतीः कुयार्त ् ||18||
वै ानरोि िचि प गलैरग्नेि धाहुितं िवधाय = with these three mantras mentioned earlier,
give three offering into the fire.

in the
3 ऐं ीं ीं ऐं क्लीं सौः पच सवर्ज्ञाज्ञापय वाहा वाहा नमः centre
बहु पिज ायािम ां दे वतामाहा = In the tongue of agni named bahuroopa and which is in
the centre of the firepot, call upon the main diety प चोपचारै पचायर् = worship with the
five treats.
The main diety of homa is to be invited in the centre of the firepit and to be
worshiped with five treats (gandha, flowers, inscene stick, light and eatables).
सवार्सां चक्रदे वीनां एकाहुितं हु वा = for all avarana devataas of the main diety, one each
ghee offereing to be given नमो तान ् पादक
ु ा तान ् शेषान ् म त्रान ् = other mantras ending
with namah or paadukaa or any other word, वाहा तान ् िवधाय = made ending with
svaahaa and जह
ु ु यात ् =ghee offering to be given.
यिद का यमी सेत ् अभी दे वतायै िवज्ञा य संक पं कृ वा एतावत ् कमर्िस यथर्ं
एतावदाहुतीः किर यामीित ||23||
यिद = in case का यमी सेत ् = expect the result अभी दे वतायै = to the desired diety
िवज्ञा य = request संक पं कृ वा =after doing the sankalpa एतावत ् कमर्िस यथर्ं = to
achieve this result एतावदाहुतीः = these many offerings किर यामीित =I shall do thus.
If one expects a result then main diety should be requested and sankalpa should be
done. To expect this result, I shall offer these many offerings like that and then do
the homa.
The expected results and the items to be used in homa to obtain those results are
listed as below.
बिलं प्रदाय = Bali to be provided as mentioned in the worship method of the diety.
इतः पूवर्ं प्राणदे हबुिद्धधमार्िधकारतो जाग्र व नसुषु यव थासु मनसा वाचा कमर्णा
ह ता यां प यां उदरे ण िश ा यत ् मत
ृ ं यदक्त
ु ं य कृतं त सवर्ं ब्र ापर्णं भवतु वाहा
इित ब्र ापर्णामाहुितं कृ वा ||27||
This is an offering of whatever done to the great god. Meaning is clear as above.
िचदिग्नं दे वतां = the God who is fire and awareness, him चा म यद्व
ु ासयािम नम =
dissolve in myself इ यद्व
ु ा य = thus dissolved.
Remember you invoked the awareness from the third eye into the firepit for worship,
which you are dissolving back into you.
तद्भ मितलकधरो = applied the ashes of the homa लोकसंमोहनकारः = with personality
of deluding worlds सख
ु ी = happlily िवहरे त ् = walk away इित िशवम ् = thus the end.
Meaning is clear as above. However there are following mantras used to apply the
homa bhasma on to the body.

ु ं (on top of head).
