Message from the advisor of the MUT
It is with great pleasure that I welcome all of you to the
5th Terengganu Medical Update organised by Kelab Medik
HSNZ with the association of the Medical Department HSNZ.
This is an annual event which was started in the year 2011.
This educational event has been well received and attended by
different categories of health care professionals .

The main purpose of this event is to update health care

professionals on the current evidence based management of
different type of diseases, either communicable or non
communicable. The advances of treatment and the
development of new guidelines necessitate all health care Dr Asmah Mohd
professionals to improve the standard of care for our patients .

The 5th Terengganu Medical update promised to highlight
diverse medical conditions spanned in different specialities Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah
that sings along the medical discipline itself. The topics are
carefully chosen to suit the current melodies of medicine.
Sessions on case discussions and data interpretations meant
to be interactive and practical hence promote better
understanding. We have invited local as well as national
speakers.

The working committee lead by Dr Zamri Mohamed has been

working very hard to realise the 5th Terengganu Medical
Update. Congratulations to the team for their best effort. This
event receives participation of delegates from all over
Malaysia. We would like to thank our invited speakers in
advance for their willingness to participate in the
5th Terengganu Medical Update. We also like to thank the
pharmaceutical companies for their contributions.

We hope to continue this effort annually in years to come. Do

Message from the organizing chairman

Buckminster Fuller created the “Knowledge Doubling Curve”.

He noticed that until 1900 human knowledge doubled
approximately every century. By the end of World War II
knowledge was doubling every 25 years. Today,
Dr Zamri Mohamed nanotechnology knowledge is doubling every two years and
Chairman, MUT 2015 clinical knowledge every 18 months and on average human
knowledge is doubling every 13 months.

In the rapidly evolving world of medicine, state-of-the-art

practice requires us as health personnel to update our
knowledge. MUT 2015 will provide you with comprehensive,
up-to-date, evidence-based therapeutic concepts that you will
be able to implement into your daily practice, our scientific
committee had highlighted the important topics and issues
which covers all major Internal Medicine subspecialty and wide
range of common medical disorder that is relevant with our
practice.

Apart from the opportunities afforded by the conference’s

scientific session, the participant especially those from outside
Terengganu will also have the chance to experience myriad of
Terengganu tourist and cultural attraction such as idyllic
beaches and islands, delicious culinary delights, fabulous
shopping bargains as well as a chance to renew acquaintances
and make new friends.

The ancient Greeks certainly thought music and health is

interlinked. Recent medical studies seems to confirm what
the Greek thought. Music exert these benefits by promoting the
brains ability to make new connections between nerve cells and
works its magic through its rhythms.

We hope that you will enjoy the rhythm and melodies that will

 Faculty Biodata
DR ASMAH MOHD
Dr Asmah is currently the Head of Department of Medicine and also a Consultant Rheumatologist in
HSNZ. Before current appointment, our Malacca - born HOD had done her fellowship training in
Rheumatology in Hospital Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban before she went for a 1 year attachment at
Rheumatology and Immunology Department in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore in 2008. She actively
contributes in clinical work and social work . She has published many research papers and presented at
local and international conferences. A caring and dedicated rheumatologist in HSNZ.

DR ZARIAH ABDUL AZIZ

Dr Zariah is a well known national Neurologist, currently practicing in HSNZ. She obtained her
specialist registrar in Clinical Neurophysiology from National Hospital for Neurology &
Neurosurgery, London in 2001 and pursued in Neurophysiology NCS/EMG at University
Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden in 2004. She is also a committee member and trainer of various
societies related to neurology. Furthermore, she has published many papers and clinical trials.
Energetic and stylish neurologist that is very committed in her field.

DR NORHAYA MOHD RAZALI

Dr Norhaya is a Senior Consultant Respiratory Physician in Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ), Kuala
Terengganu. She graduated from University Malaya and then received her post graduate training at UKM.
Dr Norhaya then pursued her subspecialty in Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College London & Brompton
Hospital, London. She is a life member of Malaysian Thoracic Society and also chairperson of Subspecialty
Respiratory Credentialing Committee, Malaysia.

DATUK DR AHMAD SHUKRI BIN DATO’ MD SALLEH

Datuk Dr Ahmad Shukri is a Senior Consultant Physician and also Gastroenterologist in

HSNZ. He graduated in 1989 from University Malaya. He did his gasteroenterology training
at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, UK. He is an expert in endoscopic stenting and
endoscopic ultrasound. Besides practicing as Gasteroenterologist, he is also involved in
Infection Control Team and member of Occupational Safety and Health unit.

DR ZAIHA HARUN

Dr Zaiha is a Senior Consultant Nephrologist who received her MBBS from Adelaide University,
Australia in year 1994. Before completing her fellowship in Nephrology in 2008, she obtained her
MMed in Internal medicine in 2003 in USM. Now she is the Head of Nephrology Department in HSNZ
and actively involved in various projects related to medical and also for social development. 9
DR ZULKIFLI MUSTAPHA
Dr Zulkifli Mustapha received his Medical degree in 1997 from USM. He completed his Master in
Internal Medicine in 2009 from the same university and pursued in Fellowship training in
Cardiology for 3years. He is now our beloved Cardiologist with interest in Coronary Intervention.

DR KHAIRUL AZMI IBRAHIM

Dr Khairul Azmi is graduated from University College Cork, Ireland in 1999. He underwent his
housemanship in HKL then continued his service as a medical officer in Hospital Sibu. He obtained his
Master in Internal Medicine from USM in 2009. He then pursued his training in Neurology in HSNZ, HKL
and PPUM. He did his fellowship in stroke medicine in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, United Kingdom for
a year until May 2014 and now is our neurologist with interest in Stroke Medicine.

DR ZAMRI MOHAMED

Dr Zamri is a senior physician in HSNZ. He obtained his MMED in Internal Medicine in 2008 and
previously had various working experience in many hospital all over the country. His area of
expertise is medical disorders in pregnancy. He leads a lot of subunit in our department and is
very active in social and clinical activities. He loves to teach and it reflects as he is also a part-time
lecturer and clinical supervisor for UCSI and UniSZA.

NIK AHMAD SHAIFFUDIN BIN NIK HIM
MD, MMed (Emer. Med., USM), AM(Mal)

Dr Nik Ahmad is an alumni of USM since 1998. After completing housemanship in 1999, he was
posted to Emergency Department, HKL where he was introduce to emergency and trauma
services that creating a deep interest in emergency medicine. He obtained his masters in
emergency medicine in 2005. During post graduate training, he was involved immensely with
life support courses and currently a certified instructor trainer with vast experience in basic
and advanced life support training.
At present, he is a medical lecturer and Consultant Emergency Physician at Faculty Of
Medicine, University Sultan Zainal Abidin. He is a member of College of Emergency Physician,
Academy of Medicine Malaysia, trainer for Malaysian Society for Traumatology and Emergency
Medicine, Life Member PGMES Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah and Terengganu Resuscitation
Society. Currently he was appointed as Director of Hospital Development Centre, UniSZA and
spearheading the development of a modern Teaching Hospital of UniSZA.
