Saint Luke

Saint Luke

Saint Luke is one of the most interesting saint I have come to research. I was drawn to

him because of what he is a patron saint of, that being physicians and artists. As I have grown as

a person, I have reached the age where I need to find what I would like to pursue in my life, and

Saint Luke has done that for me. Besides from his interesting life and stories, what he

“specializes” in has drawn me to take certain paths in my life, and to figure out what I want to do

with it.

What I find so interesting about saints is the ones have a mystery factor in their life.

Luke’s life is very unknown, but he was believed to have been born in Greek, and was raised a

Gentile. It is so intriguing to read about a saint, and to find out that a majority of them are not

born true to the catholic faith. It has become more evident to me that this contributes to their

canonization. Their stories on how God called them specifically and how they listened and live

by his word. Saint Luke did exactly this. When you are raised another religion, the Catholic faith

was foreign to him, but he listened to God and fallowed a companion who lead him down the

path lightened by God. He was born a slave, but somehow grew up and prospers to become a

doctor. Families who ‘owned’ slaves, planned to educate him in medicine so they would have a

family physician, and that is exactly what the family who owned Luke did.

Luke, being the writer of the Gospel and also the Act of the Apostles, leads the readers to

gain insight on the journey he took of Christianity. We don’t know much, if anything, about his
conversion besides he joined St. Paul who later was the person who introduced him to the church

and Jesus Christ. We learn through the writing in Acts of the Apostles that Luke went with Paul

on his travels through Miletus, Tyre, Caesarea, and to Jerusalem. This mentor relationship

between Paul and Luke later developed more into a friendship even, being shown through when

Luke doesn’t leave Paul’s side when he is prisoned. “Only Luke is with me” (2 Timothy 4:11).

This saint has always drawn me towards him for many reason during my research

process. As I have grown in my faith along with my knowledge, I have found what I feel God

has called me to do with my life and essentially what to do to give back to him. I have found a

love in medicine along with art. Even at a young age I have always had a drawing towards art,

but as I spent time in hospitals at a young age I wanted to learn more about medicine and the

human body. With this, I felt I could give back to God with helping and healing others. As I

reached the age of confirmation, I was looking for a saint to research more into. I came across

Saint Luke who was conveniently the patron saint of both art and medicine. I not only felt a

calling towards those subjects, but one to Luke because of the close relationship. At such a

young age, it is hard to know what you want to do with your life, but I feel that this is Gods

calling.

Saint Luke is a saint of mystery, intelligence, hardship, and companionship. He has

shown these factors through his life, from not leaving Paul’s side in times of hardship to

prospering in his faith and knowledge even when he was raised as a slave. Saint Paul leads with

courage, strength, and humility, but most importantly he never fails to credit his blessings in life

God.

Prayer to Saint Luke

Saint Luke the Evangelist,

Prayer for the children of God, that they find the

creativity in their faith along with their lives.

Bless us with your strength and courage to expand our

knowledge within our health and our faith.

Look upon those with compassion as they go through

the studies of medicine and art,

And give them the same drive that you had to succeed.
