Sweet Medicine tells the story of a young

Zimbabwean woman, Tsitsi, who lives life by the
rules set out by society and enforced by her strict
Catholic mother.
For much of the time, that plan works for
her – except when it comes to her education.
Despite the words of her Catholic priest, Fata
Masika, who says that “educating a girl too much
is asking for trouble, asking her to become a
prostitute”, Tsitsi continues to work hard at

realisation that her dreams of becoming the head of Zimbabwe’s reserve bank will likely
never materialise.
For Duwa Mubaira, this story reflects the singularity of African women’s existence,
something that up until recent years has not been adequately portrayed in the media.
Born in Ethiopia, Duwa grew up in Malawi and has called South Africa her home for the
past few years. Having visited 11 countries in Africa, including Zimbabwe, and with even
more on her bucket list, it’s safe to say she has a true African spirit. Added to this, her
professional experience as Managing Director at Malawi’s Guardian Publications and now
as a personal and business coach, she knows first-hand the struggles faced by women.
Having been exposed to so many aspects of life on the continent, Duwa immediately
acknowledges that this is more than just an African voice telling an African story. It draws
parallels to the experiences of real people, especially women. “I’ve seen the desperation
and resulting exhaustion of women who are carrying too much responsibility, sacrificing
for everybody else and yet are still plagued by self-doubt and wrestle with the insecurity
of finding or keeping a man,” she says. The setting is 2008

Realising that there were no artists capturing the

“There simply wasn't anything like Ethiopian street-life on

The Moving Shadows series features solitary shadows,

Loco for cocoa BEAN

TO BAR
It typically takes 10 steps to
transform raw cocao into the
sweet chocolate bars you’ll

1
find on a supermarket shelf.

2
Trees are planted and grown in the tropical
regions. The trees can grow up to 10 metres tall
and produce cocao for 25 to 30 years.

The fruit of the trees is harvested twice a

year; once picked, they are sorted into piles

3
according to the grade of the pod.

Once harvested, the cocoa beans

4
are removed from the pods,
separated and left to ferment.

After about six days of fermentation, the cocao is

5
left in an open area to dry in order to ensure that
they’re not moody (dry) or bitter.

Dried cocao beans are then transported to a
