relations professionals, developing this kit has provided us with great experience and will be a
useful asset to your organization.

The news release in this kit concerns your monthly tailgates for food distribution. Using this to
alert local news outlets will generate promotion and increase the reach of your program. A
feature story highlights a Ball State student impacted by your efforts. Fact sheets and
backgrounders are included to cover your organization and program. The media advisory can be
shared with local media outlets to encourage their coverage of the tailgate event. This content
can be utilized to increase awareness and success of Second Harvest and the tailgate program.

Please review our media kit and let us know if you have any questions or if we can be of any
more service to Second Harvest. It has been a pleasure working with you.

Sincerely,

Ashley Nylen and Ashley Waddell

Second Harvest Food Bank tailgate program

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana was founded in 1938 and has since

been dedicated to fighting hunger. Each month, Second Harvest provides food distribution

tailgates in its eight surrounding counties. This program is funded by the local United Way and

other local businesses.

Each year, Second Harvest distributes more than 2 million pounds of food to families in

need. This drive-through program meets people at a central location in each of the eight counties

it serves. Delaware County has the highest rate of food insecurity in East Central Indiana at 17.2

percent. Residents in this county can pick up food in the old Borg Warner parking lot according

to the monthly schedule. With the help of its volunteers, the food insecurity rate in the region has

decreased 4.3 percent from 2016. Every month, nearly 700 volunteer hours are logged by local

community members who dedicate their time to helping their neighbors.

Second Harvest Food Bank

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana was founded in 1983 and is currently

managed by Tim Kean, who has worked with the nonprofit organization for 13 years. His

mission for the company is to educate others about hunger relief and poverty alleviation.

Second Harvest focuses on three primary areas including food distribution, food

education and advocacy for those in need. They access millions of pounds of food that would

normally go to waste and distribute it to struggling families. Second Harvest strives to expand

the knowledge of the general public regarding the circumstances of low-income families and

speak for those who have no voice in the community. It is their belief that every individual has a

right to be heard in all areas of government and community.

Second Harvest Food Bank ignites passion for Ball State student

MUNCIE, Ind., -- Second Harvest has been giving back to the community for more than

30 years. In order to provide food to families in need, Second Harvest strives for a healthy

relationship with its volunteers. Ball State junior, Lexi Harmacinski, has volunteered at Second

Harvest for three years and has allowed the organization to impact her future.

“I have learned that there are people in this world that need help, and it doesn’t take a

significant amount of time or money to help them,” Harmacinski said. “Second Harvest has

taught me to be a contributing person to this community and that I can make an impact as an

individual no matter what amount of time, money, or service I can give to those in need.”

Since volunteering at Second Harvest, Harmacinski has been committed to this cause and

was elected as the community service chair for her sorority. She has also planned community

service events for volunteers to pack lunches for children in the Muncie school district.

“Volunteering with Second Harvest has really given me an inside look at the people that

are impacted by their services,” Harmacinski said. “It has shown me compassion in the fact that

there are people who are in need of food to feed themselves and their loved ones. Seeing how my

services impact people at a local level makes me feel more inclined to serve as an individual. It is

amazing seeing how beneficial it is for people in our community.”

As a business administration major at Ball State, Harmacinski hopes to continue to give

back even after her time at Ball State is over. She said that volunteering has shaped her entire

collegiate experience.

“Working with Second Harvest has truly been eye opening for me. Before college I never

would have considered working in the nonprofit sector,” Harmacinski said. “It is my goal to find

a job in this industry after I graduate. I would love to help manage a nonprofit, especially one

that works to end hunger.”

Harmacinski plans to continue her role with Alpha Gamma Delta as the community

service chair through the year. After graduation Harmacinski hopes to work for a local nonprofit
