Thing 10: Search Strategies

1. Evaluating databases for elementary students

I evaluated e-Library Elementary and Kids InfoBits. Both e-Library Elementary and Kids
InfoBits had equal appropriateness, content, and credibility. I think Kids InfoBits was a
little easier to use because resources were categized and separated by type. For example,
the Kids InfoBits homepage had a variety of topics for students to click on. After
selecting a topic, categories were available for students to choose from and narrow their
search. I think the options to help students narrow their search and find information is
useful—especially for younger students. E-Library Elementary had a more traditional
database search where students type in their topic. This is more complex for elementary
students because they are still learning to create a search that produces good results.
Both database websites had easy-to-read text and bright graphics.

2. Additional resources for students in MeL.

 World Book Kids
 National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
 MeL for Kids
 MeL for Kids About Michigan

3. The first website I evaluated was:

https://allaboutexplorers.com/explorers/columbus/
It was very evident that this website was a hoax. The content information on this
website was not credible at all. For example, the first paragraph says that Christopher
Columbus was born in 1951 and the last paragraph says he died in 1906. Another
indication that this website is a hoax is that there is no author or references listed.
Thinking about bias and purpose, this website appears as though it is intended to be
informative, but after reading the content, it is clear this website is a hoax. This can
be slightly deceiving when taking a first glance at the webpage. Lastly, the usability of
this website is user friendly. However, the design of this website lacks professional
design.

4.) I created this citation using Easy Bib.
