ABSTRACT:
This paper focuses on how the extended use of mobile devices and tablets has
produced a publishing trend of development of new hybrid machines –a mix
of printing and digital techniques and materialities– for reading purposes.
Therefore, this paper will analyse the remediated nature of some books which
enhance their physicality and capabilities by inscribing rhetorical and material
prosthesis into his printed body. I will use the theoretical concepts of
remediation applied to media writing as created by Jay Bolter, the virtual body
as explained by Katherine Hayles, the ideas of artefact and cyborg as applied
by Fernando Broncano and the role of wreader as seen by Vicente Luis Mora.

ABSTRACT:
The immersion of the fictional territory in the virtual space came to promote,
to get back and to challenge contents and forms from the territory of the literary
creation. Among the several examples that we could count, short short story,
aphorism, haiku represent textual categories that, precisely because of their
organic qualities –among them the intensity, the capacity for suggestion and
the synthesis carried to its extreme– have now gained an important heritage in
various fictional fields.
Starting from the idea that the short short story-Internet binomial includes a
series of operative characteristics that fit each other, we will propose in the
present work to draw a virtual cartography of the Brazilian short short story in
Internet, from the manifestation of its visual and graphic component.

ABSTRACT:
Although the conception of old age is changing significantly in our societies,
there is still a certain social assumption that older people do not have the
aptitude or the skill to learn to use the new digital information and
communication technologies (TDIC). Studies reveal that aging is not a linear
theme and does not correspond to a single pattern. There are several factors
that allow or not the use of digital technologies by older people and not just
the age factor. The objective of the article is to demonstrate how a group of
older Brazilian women use their Smartphone with great skill in their daily

piel y me causó mucha risa. El grupo me hace sentirme bien. No quiero

ABSTRACT:

which lacks emotion. This paper analyses Chilean internet users' opinions
about online dating websites as well as the national users' experiences in these
virtual spaces. The focus is placed on both the presence of feelings in the digital
interactions they undertake, and the interpretations make from this experience.

JENNIFER ISASI
UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN
ABSTRACT:
I present a methodology that combines approaches from literary analysis and
computer science in order to show how the results of distant reading replicate
well established readings of Benito Pérez Galdós’ Zumalacárregui and
Mendizábal (1898). I explain the concept of character system, the stages of
data-mining the characters, and social network analysis measurements. Data
show that the main difference between the two novels’ character networks is
an opposite protagonicity of historical and fictional personae. In addition, the
visualizations of these “synchronic system[s] of social relations” (Jameson)
also explain the spontaneous perception of Zumalacárregui as having a bigger
degree of historicity. Indeed, whereas Zumalacárregui’s graph recognizes the
historical division between carlistas and isabelinos, Mendizábal’s,
interestingly enough, produces a clear distinction between historical and
fictional characters.

ABSTRACT:
Pimp Flaco, a trap artist from Barcelona, and his thousands of fans that follow
his public profiles in Instagram and Twitter and Youtube, have created a multi-
channel of complex orality where art reception and art work become one. Artist
and followers’ messages mix art and comunication, up to the point of culture
stopping to be a code separated of ordinary communication, and it’s used as a
whole by the community for reelaborate and obtain its collective codes. Pimp
Flaco, as Homero did, is not well defined by absolute originality, but his talent
consist in invoking a serie of subjects, topics and collective formulas. The
cooperative use of verbal violence stands out among them.

docenas de veces los videoclips de Pimp Flaco no solo se divierten;

Czechs are not engaged socially and politically, but they are
dependent primarily on television and online games (also six of the
ten lexemes).
The only common topic of Czechs and Germans is the area of
information technology and natural phenomena (two lexemes).
This comparison did not confirm the original hypothesis that
the search terms will be broadly similar. It can be assumed that
causes of different perspective of Czechs and Germans of the world
around them and of themselves are more (different historical
development of both countries, greater participation of Germans in
social and political affairs, differentiation value system, Germans
more concerned with their own safety as well as social security -
especially in the current context of the economic crisis in Greece
and the refugee crisis, etc.) Comparison of both rankings, however,
clearly indicates that the fundamental difference between Czechs
and Germans is mainly different degree of public involvement.
The notion of community involvement has become in recent
decades a permanent part of the public and professional discourse.
Community involvement as one of the main attributes of a modern
developed society means primarily how much the citizens of a
given country are involved in public life (public activities), how
interested in politics they are, how they are identified with the
democratic system, to what extent and in which areas they are
voluntarily engaged. A common feature is a voluntary
commitment, incorruptibility, orientation to the common good and
the public (Daphi, 2010).
Community involvement in the Czech Republic:
In 2015 in the Czech Republic was carried out comprehensive
unique research conducted by the Centre of Civic Education
Faculty of Humanities in cooperation with Konrad Adenauer

zivilgesellschaft>. In the last twenty years in Germany created 400
civil foundations supporting local and regional plans. Their
importance has increased, especially in the context of the refugee
crisis, in which more than half of them is engaged. According to a
study by market research GfKBilanz des Helfens, Germans donated
in 2015, a total of €5.5 billions o for church and humanitarian aid.
According to the latest survey of the Federal Ministry for Family
Affairs from 2014 (BMFSFJ) in Germany there are about 31
millions of Germans involved as volunteers, which is ten percent
more than 15 years ago. Great potential for voluntary involvement
is represented by young people. Of a total of 615 000 civil society
organizations is one in six focused on working with children and
youth (ZiViZ, 2013). Significant differentiation in the of public
involvement of young Czechs and Germans confirmed the results
of a unique survey of the OECD, which was focused on the
comparison of 40 industrialized countries (the observed sample, the
age group 15-29 years). Germany in this comparison occupied the
second place (behind Denmark), while the Czech Republic ended
in the penultimate 39th place.
4. Conclusion
194
Caracteres. 6 (2)
that this trend can be expected in the future. It is clear that many
years of repression of civil society in the Czech Republic (and in
other post-communist countries) has raised in many people fear and
reluctance to engage. The Czech Republic will probably still time
to deal with the deficits of their democratic system (highly corrupt,
unstable party systems, low trust in politics, low voter turnout,
skepticism, reluctance to engage etc.), Which is a precondition for
the creation of a truly mature functioning engaged civil society
(Heydemann & Vodička, 2013).
The issue of relations between the most frequent lexemes in
Internet search engines and interest preferences of their users
(populations) as a topical issue sociolinguistic research may
become the subject of further replicated research.

ABSTRACT:
The article deals with the Internet influence on the thinking of today's students
and the formation of verbal-semantic level of the language personality
structure. In comparative retrospective, linguistic elements of the zero model
of language personality are presented. The linguistic personality is interpreted
by the authors as a layer model consisting of three levels, each of which
changes the effects of the overall content of the given language person. The
students are expected to start the 21st century by being inevitably influenced
by various electronic technologies, especially the Internet. The research was
conducted on particular groups of international students.

because a two-year old child´s speech includes 50% to 60% of the hidden

made by Fr. Tracy is that he perceived the grammatical categories too
formally. However, the general conclusions are justified: ideas which
play the most important role in the brain of a child, and which the child
most frequently expresses through words, are the ideas of acts,
movements, but not the states, qualities and characteristics. (K.

age of 17-20, the VSL set of elements changes: the number of verbs
reduces, but the number of adjectives increases, i.e. 11% and 22%
(Tracy) (Tab. 1).
The authors also made a comparison of the language
personality structure of adults in different social contexts (socio-
historical retrospection, i.e. terminology of the paper´s authors),
where they observed a tendency characteristic for the change of the
verbal-semantic level (VSL) under the influence of the Internet
environment. Here, the VSL elements of adults obtained in
different time periods were explored: at the turn of the 19th and
20th centuries (according to Tracy) and at the beginning of the 21st
century (according to the paper´s authors). The comparative
analysis encompassed materials of an empirical research, which the
authors conducted on a sample of 70 male and female students
(aged 17 to 20) of technical fields of study at the Czech and
Ukrainian institutes of tertiary education. The Czech Republic was
represented by the Institute of Technology and Business in České
Budějovice, where 35 individuals (aged 19 to 20) took part in the
research (SCZ). In Ukraine, the research was conducted on a
sample of 35 individuals (aged 17-19) of the Kremenchuk
Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi National University (SUKR).
First, the students completed descriptive questionnaires that
were to examine the level of interaction with the Internet
environment. The results were as follows: 100% of the respondents
(35 students from the Czech Republic and 35 students from
Ukraine) use information sources on the Internet, 100% of
respondents (35 students from the Czech Republic and 35 students
from Ukraine) regularly use social networks, 62.8% of students
from the Czech Republic (22 students) and 51.4% of Ukrainian

INFLUENCE OF HASHTAG ON FORMATION OF NEW
PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS IN POLITICAL JOURNALISM OF
ONLINE MEDIA
ELENA TOMÁŠKOVÁ
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS IN ČESKÉ BUDĚJOVICE
ABSTRACT:
The paper investigates new phraseological units in political journalism of
online media, which are characterized by fused writing of words that make up
the phraseme. It is assumed that this kind arose under the influence of hashtags
in which, as a rule, some words are written without spaces. Phraseological
innovations of this kind are part of the language game in journalism of online
media, as they currently are not so typical for printed newspapers. The main
purpose of using neophraseme with fused writing of words is to increase the
text expressiveness and emotionality.

group the messages in order to facilitate the search and improve its
efficiency. Hashtags, consisting of several words, begins with the #
symbol, and then the words without spaces, for example, well-
known among the Russian-speaking users in the social network
Instragram hashtag # mirdolzhenznatchtoyaem.
Hashtags quickly gained popularity around the world due to
the functionality and ease of use. Suffice it to recall the fact that the
American Dialect Society has given the Twitter-inspired term a
boost by christening «hashtag» the word of the year. The decision
came at the society’s annual meeting in Boston over the weekend,
where more than 250 linguists, lexicographers, grammarians,
historians and other word maniacs weighed the relative merits of
terms like «fiscal cliff», «Gangnam style», and «marriage
equality». In the main category, «hashtag» emerged as something
of a dark-horse winner, edging out «fiscal cliff» and «marriage
equality» (which took most likely to succeed honors), despite not
being on the official list of nominees, as Ben Zimmer, the chairman
of the society’s new words committee, noted in a rundown of the
action: «This was the year when the hashtag became a ubiquitous
phenomenon in online talk. In Twitter and other sites hashtags have
created instant social trends, spreading messages on topics ranging
from politics to pop culture», Mr. Zimmer said in a statement
(Schuessler, 2013).
Polylexeme hashtags with the lack of spaces between words,
in our view, influenced the writing neophraseme in political
journalism, determining the emergence and active functioning of
the phraseological innovations like onizhedeti or putinslil in the
language of the Internet media.
It is important to note that the graphical features (fused
spelling), formally giving to phraseme the form of the lexeme, in

about 1:3. In Czech, the active voice prevailed over the passive one
as well, but with a significantly higher ratio of 57:606, that is almost
1:10.
The reflexive passive was not taken into account for the needs
of the article, that is, for the comparison of the frequency in the use
of passive voice, as it focused on periphrastic passive constructions,
which share the same structure both in English and in Czech.
However, the following numbers show it plays an important part
when dealing with technical texts. When analysing the occurrence
and use of Czech passive constructions, it was found out that the
number of reflexive passive constructions in the Czech texts
prevailed significantly over the periphrastic ones by 42 to 28, that
is, 1.5:1. Like in the case of periphrastic passive, the majority of the
reflexive passive constructions were used in present tense. The
share of the individual tenses was 9% (4) in past simple, only one
of them in the future simple (about 2%) and 37 (88%) in present
tense.

HABLA BIEN, ESCRIBE MEJOR.
ABSTRACT:
A new language MOOC, aimed at native Spanish speakers and foreign students
with an advanced level, has been developed within the E-LENGUA Project to
focus on the proper use of the Spanish language. The design is based on a
cMOOC – xMOOC hybrid format and aims to combine a convenient and
familiar structure with the necessary flexibility to allow for an independent and
customized training, as well as a strong social component. Therefore, its
ultimate goal is to develop a learning community where both types of speakers
contribute significantly to make progress in language proficiency and in
understanding how language works.

HOW TO IMPROVE COLLABORATION AND INTERACTION
IN THE TEACHING OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE BY

FREIDERIKOS VALETOPOULOS
UNIVERSITY OF POITIERS, FORELL – EA3816
ABSTRACT:
The spread of mobile phones opened up new perspectives for autonomous
learning, particularly within the frame of teaching and learning a foreign
language. The use of this device in education involves two major challenges:
the first is accessibility to technology and the second teaching methodology.
In the context of this article, the second aspect concerning teaching
methodology will be explored through the results of an experiment, which
highlighted certain advantages such as the development of socio-affective
strategies but also the development of communicative competence through the
integration of the non-verbal aspect and self-correction.

of this challenge and especially for the needs of the first stage,
which concerns the use of mobile phones in the development of
collaboration and interaction, the focus will be on the studies
concerning this aspect.
The current project finds its main source of inspiration in a
The aim of that first experiment was to test two factors: the
perceived usefulness and the perceived ease-of-use according to the
Technology Acceptance Model of Davis et al. (1989). The first
factor is defined as “the degree to which a person believes that using
a particular system would enhance his or her job performance” and
the second factor is defined as “the degree to which a person
believes that using a particular system would be free from effort”.
Chanudet (2012) proposed an experiment to a group of
learners of French as a foreign language living in different countries
such as Korea, Canada, France, etc. These learners used mobile
phones in asynchronous communication in order to carry out
different action-oriented tasks. When someone posted a video or a
photo on the internet, the other members of the group could send a
vocal or written message commenting the photo or the video. For
instance, one of the topics concerned hobbies. The task was
expected to be completed in three steps:
1. learners had to film themselves playing an instrument or
practicing sports trying to explain, at the same time, in French why
they had chosen that instrument or that sport.
2. the other learners had to listen or to watch the video and
then to post questions in order to learn more about the hobby. These
questions could be written or spoken orally.
320
Caracteres. 6 (2)
3. the first learner had to answer all the questions. The teacher
watched all the films and posted recommendations as a feedback to
the learners.
According to the research analysis, the author observed that a.
learners produced more and b. They produced better. They
produced more because of three factors: they started progressively
to feel confident because they produced independently; they felt
they were producing in an authentic language context; and finally
they produced in an unusual, non-academic, context using a
familiar device. Concerning the second aspect, the quality of their
production, the author mentioned six different points (Chanudet &
Valetopoulos, 2016):
a. conscious learning: the device requires from the learner to
be the director of his/her production, since he/she is the only one
who decides how to film his/her environment in order to achieve
the objective of communication. It is thus a technical investment
that joins the personal investment, necessary for effective learning.
b. non-verbal aspect of the communication: using video, the
image also plays an important role, as it promotes an awareness of
the importance of non-verbal communication in the transmission of
messages.
c. self-image: the videos are posted on a virtual site, which
imposes the respect of a certain quality of production. Wishing to
convey a good image of them-selves, some learners try to provide
oral production that they consider to be of good quality.
d. shared storage for videos: the possibility of multiple views
gives learners the opportunity to perceive errors and to check them.
Viewing peer videos also contributes to discovering the peer's
language strategies. The device allows students to “learn from the
other” who, unknowingly, assume the role of a tutor.
321
Caracteres. 6 (2)
2
See Vavoula and Sharples (2002: 152): “learning is mobile in terms of space, i.e. it
happens at the workplace, at home, and at places of leisure; it is mobile between
different areas of life, i.e. it may relate to work demands, self-improvement, or leisure
and it is mobile with respect to time, i.e. it happens at different times during the day,
on working days or on weekends”, cited by Ryu and Parsons (2009: 3).
322
Caracteres. 6 (2)
Research has for the most part shed a very positive light on the potential
of the role that mobile devices may play. At the same time, however,
there has also been indication of several areas that certainly deserve
consideration in their implementation.

For this second task, the use of mobile phones seems marginal.
But it was essential because the photos were collected thanks to the
mobility of this device which served as a basis for the whole activity
and allowed to develop both oral and written skills, but also
different strategies such as remediation. The “motivation” factor
due to the authenticity of the task, linked to the capture of authentic
scenes of everyday life and to the emotions associated with it,
played a decisive role in the success of this activity (see also
Ushioda, 2011).

speaking skills. The learner plays the major role during the
interview, which gives him/her the possibility to interact with
native speakers more easily.
Concerning the corrections and other modifications, there can
be three different kinds: 1. the learner can compare his/her
production with that of the native speakers and self-correct, 2. the
interviewee can also indirectly propose a modification or a
grammatical or lexical readjustment (ah, I understand, you mean
...), 3. the teacher provides a professional correction, but in an
unusual form, as it takes the form of a video on the platform.
Another important advantage of the filmed interview is the
awareness of the importance of non-verbal communication.
Learners understand that they can use mimo-gestual strategies in
order to be understood. Finally, being in direct contact with native
speakers, the learner finds himself/herself in a situation which
requires mobilizing real socio-cultural skills (e.g. tu or vous ‘you
singular’ or ‘you plural’, the distance to be respected between the
interlocutors, etc. ...).
Looking back on the bibliographical references, Burston
(2016: 5) pointed out that “…two main challenges face the effective
integration of MALL into the foreign language curriculum:
technology access and pedagogical methodology”. The pilot
experiment (Chanudet, 2012) highlighted about these two specific
challenges but also other parameters concerning teaching and
learning foreign languages. If the use of new technologies does not
seem to create any difficulties for learners, other questions have
arisen concerning the following points: How can the positive or
negative impact of using mobile phones or other ICTs on language
learning be measured and assessed? How can a large number of
tasks avoiding routine be proposed? How can the impact of ICTs
on student motivation and commitment to learning be measured?
329
Caracteres. 6 (2)
What can be the appropriate balance between these tools and the
conventional method in the classroom?
Bearing in mind these questions, a questionnaire was
distributed to learners in order to enlighten the two challenges
mentioned above: technology access and pedagogical
methodology. This questionnaire included questions such as 1.
language qualifications, number of foreign languages studied,
amount of time spent on the study of the target-language; 2.
information on student access to and use of a range of common ICT
applications; 3. information about how they evaluate different
aspects of their experience with mobile phones: collaboration with
the others, interaction with learners and teachers and self-
observation of their learning.
Learners answered very positively about the impact of the use
of ICTs without precising the real impact. Different responses have
shown that learners find these tools useful to improve their
motivation because they like to listen and to understand their own
interviews, to listen to and to understand peer interviews, to listen
to their own French and, finally, to observe their own learning. All
of these responses show that students face learning by taking an
active approach. They observe and they self-observe. The
possibility to re-listen or to review the recording or video reinforces
their willingness to learn because they are confronted with their
own production. Thus, they feel more motivated to learn, to speak
and to interact. They also overcome their fear of losing face in
collective activities.
If the learners expressed their willingness to interact with their
peers or with their teachers, it can be noted, not without surprise,
that only a tiny minority of the students declared that they wanted
to develop their interactions with the native speakers. It is probably

USING INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGY IN ITALIAN LANGUAGE LEARNING AND
TEACHING: FROM TEACHER EDUCATION TO
CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES
MATTEO VIALE
ABSTRACT:
This paper describes the in-service teacher education activities carried out by
the research unit from the University of Bologna involved in the European
project E-LENGUA. This project focuses on the use of Information and
Communication Technologies (ICTs) in teaching Italian in the multilingual
classroom. The paper opens with a description of the Italian educational
context, characterised by an increasing presence of non-native speakers of
Italian. Taking into consideration the linguistic needs of students with different
sociolinguistic backgrounds is a significant challenge for teachers. ICTs may
be helpful for teachers facing such challenges, even though there are
contrasting opinions about their usage in the classroom. The paper presents
some case studies on the use of ICTs in the classroom, developed within in-
service teacher education activities and implemented in the classroom. These
studies aim to examine the use of ICTs as a teaching resource in order to
elaborate generalizable guidelines for best practices in the Italian school
system.

In particular, the analyses of textbooks dedicated to non-native speakers of Italian used in
numerous Italian schools, conducted by Braglia (2014-2015), show the limitations of the
school textbook publisher. Many textbooks do not follow the guidelines of the Common
European Framework of Reference and contain «esercizi ripetitivi fondati su frasi svincolate

There is a retorical question of Scotto di Luzio (2015: p. 15): «Non è, per caso, che classi in
His hypothetical
interlocutor might, however, argue, that the argument, that is without contradiction, does not
stand up against the opinion of those, who evaluate the didactic potential of using new
technologies in the class.
342

18, which highlights the need to know how to use such technologies
for «personal planning, organisation and resource discovery».
The teacher of L2 Italian can use in the first place what the
internet offers in their didactic work, including real online courses
with plenty of exercises on various and specific levels4. It represents
an enormous resource of materials that may be utilised for the
classes and for assignments5.
Apart from real online courses, there are numerous
applications available for studying the Italian language by the
means of the web and mobile phone (operating systems iOS,
Android and Windows Phone), for instance, Duolingo, Babbel,
Memrise, Busuu, just to mention a few of them. Though there are
numerous criticisms, mobile learning represents without any doubt
the realm that needs to be explored, especially because of the
stronger invasiveness of mobile phones in everyday life6.

Studies on validity and limits of e-learning are now numerous, especially in the international
topics; among others, see Jafrancesco (2010); Trentin (2008); Villarini (2010). However, for
Italian language in particular, there is a lack of studies that offer a global view on the situation
and would suggest validation of e-learning. For this reason, one week of studies, from 12-16
December, 2016, in Bologna, took place with the title “Esperienze di e-learning per l’italiano:
bilanci e prospettive” (Experiences of e-learning of Italian language: scales and prospectives),
which put together experts and operators from this sector to confrontation

Languages, which sees many European universities that are engaged in the problems of using
the information and communications technologies in language teaching of young and adults

The analysis of student evaluations of linguistic activities with Kahoot! was conducted by
Murino (2016-2017), who also tested an interesting variant of the activity, which let students

text is no longer solely the teacher, but the entire class. Each
individual, therefore, becomes a potential reader of the work
produced by his/her classmates. Furthermore, this allows for shared
work between native and non-native speaker students and, in
general, promotes and improves integration between various
members of the class.
Beyond the above-mentioned examples, the use of ICTs in the
classroom, which can greatly add to the dynamics of language
learning activities, is a field of experimentation full of potential in
which nothing should be taken for granted. In-service training and
the critical and purposeful exchange of knowledge, experience, and
materials provide the best path forward to improve language
teaching and to reach greater effectiveness in the development of
language competence in students. This research path is one that the
University of Bologna unit of the E-LENGUA project has
promoted and will continue to promote with conviction.

ABSTRACT:
Autonomous and accessible learning are two important didactic-
methodological aspects to address e-learning novelties in foreign language
acquisition. The implementation of both, combined with electronic resources
is created by modernising the existing e-learning tool ProGram for very
advanced German learners. ProGram is designed to improve the academic
writing skills, especially for students of philology studies and is adapted to new
technical and design standards. A special feature of the tool is the intelligent
corrector to foster autonomous learning. The interim version has been tested
to check the relevance of the Internet-based programme. The results show that
the participants, especially advanced users, were satisfied with the design and
content of the tool. A mobile version was viewed positively by only half of the
participants. Further steps will include the adaptation of a responsive design
which facilitates the usage on a mobile device.

ABSTRACT:
The objective of this paper is to present a teaching resource for Arabic as a
foreign language, developed within the context of the European project E-
LENGUA. E-LENGUA is funded by Erasmus+ programme and it aims at
developing new resources and sharing good practices in foreign language
teaching using modern information and communication technologies. The
resource consists of subtitling a set of ten episodes of the Egyptian TV series,
Dhat. The subtitles are in Spanish and the series depicts the evolution of the
Egyptian society, from the fifties until the Egyptian Revolution in 2011
through the biography of Dhat, an Egyptian middle class girl born in the fifties
in Cairo. The paper is divided into four sections. The first is an introduction
covering the theoretical framework. The second presents the methodology and
the scope of work. The learning activities and its evaluation are addressed in
the third section. Finally, the conclusions and future work are presented.

The selection of the series was based on its high historic and
cultural content, as it could give the learner an overview of the
Egyptian contemporary history.
The learning resource presented in this paper consists of
subtitling the first 10 episodes of the series into Spanish with
duration of approximately 300 minutes. Selecting a subset of the
series was due to time constraints. The team preferred to carry out
a pilot sample in order to be able to master the technique and to
evaluate the impact of using this approach through workshops in
real classrooms.
The team contacted the producer in the early stage of the
project for two main reasons: 1) to discuss the possibility of
obtaining the Arabic script as it would facilitate significantly the
subtitling process; 2) to have the permission to subtitle the episodes.
The first objective was not possible and for the second, there were
no any obstacles to work with the episodes as it was for educational
reasons with non-profit purposes. The version used for subtitling is
the available free online version on YouTube.

ABSTRACT:
In the context of the E-LENGUA project, the University of Coimbra developed
an online Moodle-based laboratory with two articulated components: a
Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) A1 level online course and an
Instructor-Learner Interaction Corpus (ILI Corpus). Designed to promote the
use of ICT in the teaching and learning (TL) of PFL, the PFL-TL Lab has
stimulated the collaborative learning of two groups of students who exhibit
very asymmetrical levels of language proficiency. The goal of the present
study is to present the lessons that were drawn from two sets of data collected
in PFL-TL Lab: learner participation levels in the online course activities and
oral interactions recorded for the ILI Corpus. Results reveal the need for
improvement measures targeted at instructional design and participants,
strongly suggesting the need for the implementation of activities fostering the
reflective practice of online tutors.

LORNA CARSON
TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN
ABSTRACT:
In this E-LENGUA challenge to improve online English language assessment
using virtual learning environments, undertaken within the institution-wide
language programme at Trinity College Dublin, we focus on specific, action-
oriented descriptions of language use, joined-up learning and assessment
materials, and embedded self-, peer- and teacher-assessment procedures. This
article presents a presentation activity designed to assess spoken production
in English at B1 and B2 proficiency levels which can be used in a traditional,
blended or online environment. The team at Trinity College Dublin explore
the rationale and use of an innovative slide presentation format, Pecha
Kucha, to be completed within Blackboard Learn. The article explores the
context of virtual learning environments such as Blackboard Learn or Moodle
and discusses the challenge of online language assessment in such an
environment. The proposed assessment task aims to foster learner
engagement and reflection through shared assessment activities, and to
ensure positive rather than negative washback in the language classroom.

However, as Coates et al. (2005: 26) point out in their
discussion of the influence of VLEs on teaching and learning, “it
is not the provision of features but their uptake and use that really
determines their educational value”.
The language assessment activity described below was
implemented at Trinity College Dublin through Blackboard Learn,
one of the most widely used VLEs in higher education. All Trinity
College staff, students and modules are automatically registered in
Blackboard Learn, although its use by academic staff across the
university – and, most likely, many other universities – varies
enormously in terms of purpose (e.g. whether simply using the
VLE as a means of storing lecture notes), function (e.g. teaching,
assessment, discussion) and regularity. In the university’s
institution-wide language programmes, coordinated within the
School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences, a
shared template is employed which provides standard information
across all modules and suggests possible means of organizing
module content, for instance thematically or chronologically.
Whilst staff training, including on how to assess in Blackboard
Learn and how customise modules, is regularly available,
competing pressures on staff time appear to translate into fairly
modest use of the VLE. The university is working hard to ensure
that the positive affordances of Blackboard Learn are maximised,

In this paper, an overview of the outcomes and possibilities of two current
language-related projects is offered. The two Erasmus+ projects are E-Lengua
(Strategic Partnerships) and XCELING (Capacity Building). E-Lengua
explores the uses of ICT-related methodologies and tries to determine how best
make use of them. XCELING aims at applying these findings to the Egyptian
context. An analysis is offered afterwards about how these conclusions should
be useful to the teaching, learning and research related to other languages than
those initially included in these two projects, both modern and, more
specifically, ancient, with special attention to Classical Greek.
