CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH GRAMMAR

Essay (25%)

Instructions:

The essay helps you demonstrate understanding and use of concepts in

English grammar.

1) Form groups of 3-4 members.

2) Choose a short story (about 2000 words) written by Malaysian
author(s). The short story must be published in 1990s to 2003 in
Malaysia.
3) Include:
a) the title of the short story
b) the name of the author(s)
c) the book title and the editor’s name(s) if the short story is taken
from a book
4) Save/convert the text into plain text format (.txt). Name the file using
the title of the short story.
5) Select ONE grammatical aspect from Weeks 1-14 to examine/analyse.
6) Report the analysis in an article.
7) Email the short story (in .txt format) to lenghong@usm.my on the same
day you submit your written assignment.

8) Submit your written assignment in hard copy by 19 Dec 2017 (by
4p.m.) to my office (C20/130).
The essay must comprise these elements:

Introduction: Introduce the topic, mention the aim of analysis and provide
background about the grammatical concept.

Methodology: Describe the text(s) and the steps of analysis.

Findings: Provide the results. It should have some quantitative data and can
be presented in charts or tables. Explain and discuss the results.

Conclusion: Review the topic and findings.

References: Utilize APA format and alphabetical order to list references.

Appendix: Selected text(s)

Format:

Length: 1000-1500 words (text only)

Font: Times New Roman, size 12, black ink
Spacing: Double, justified
