St. Augustine was born in Thagaste in North Africa, today it is know as Algeria. He was

born on November 13, 354. His mother named him Aurelius Augustine. His mother was St.

Monica. His father was a non-christian, until his mother converted him to Christianity. Augustine

was the only child in his family to receive a formal education. At the age of 28 Augustine left

Africa and went to Milan trying to find a job that suited him. There he ended up becoming a

professor of rhetoric. After teaching for only two years Augustine moved back to Africa and

continued his life there.

When returning to his home, St. Augustine lived a life of constant partying and was not a

very religious man. His mother, St. Monica, prayed for him everyday, asking the lord to show

Augustine the way. One day Augustine realized that Christianity was in fact the one true

religion, but still decided it was too hard to live a divine life. He later heard a story about two

men who were non-believers of Christianity. These two men were inspired by God and suddenly

converted to Christianity when they heard a profit read the book of life. This made St. Augustine

feel guilty and bad for what he had done and what he had failed to do. He heard God call him to

start reading St. Paul and that is exactly what he did. This began his new life, he was later
baptized by another saint, St. Ambrose, and became the bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine was a

very smart man and a great thinker of the Catholic church. St. Augustine eventually wrote

hundreds of books for the catholic church. Later on in his life he was known as an amazing

writer through out the middle East, Africa, Gual, Italy, and Spain.

St. Augustine died at the age of 75 on August 28, 430. The Feast Day of St. Augustine is

also August 28. St. Augustine is the Patron Saint of the Brewers. This is because he did not

always make the correct choices in life, but was able to turn his life around. This shows that is

never to late to turn to God, it also shows how much love God have for us. He is a role model for

people who also struggle with making the right choices in life and should be prayed to if you

need help with a difficult decision in your life.

My Prayer to St. Augustine

St. Augustine let me love as you have commanded other

to: “Love and do what you will. If you keep silent, keep silent

by love: if you speak, speak by love; if you correct, correct by

love; if you pardon, pardon by love; let love be rooted in you, and from the root nothing but good

can grow.”

Help me to turn from my sinful ways and to do the things god would want me to do.

Help me to realize that it is never too late to change my ways and let God into my heart. Give me

the strength to love others, especially the people I do not like, and to help them get closer to God.

Amen.
