What programs does CAEE offer?

The Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE) is a network of over 800 naturalists,
teachers, non-profit professionals, community representatives, government agencies and more
who work together to advance environmental literacy in Colorado. We offer programs for all those
with an interest in providing or supporting environmental education. Three key areas anchor our programs:
Drive Excellence, Foster Collaboration, and Mobilize Support.

Drive Excellence
We increase the quality of EE in Colorado by providing professional development, access to best practice,
knowledge and current trend information.

Professional DEEvelopment Webinar Series
Webinars build providers’ knowledge and skills of
environmental education. This ongoing series of
online meetings highlights topics of interest to the
environmental education community. These forums
widen perspectives, enhance skills, and further
refine techniques. Some topics discuss specific
issues, others wax philosophically, and some
provide specific skills development.
Excellence in EE Workshops
These workshops allow educators to build and
refine their skills using the National Project for
Excellence in Environmental Education Guidelines.
CAEE plans several trainings throughout the year or
provides trainings upon request for organizations
and groups. These ½ day to one day workshops
focuses on the needs of classroom teachers and
non-formal educators. Topics include:
Investigating Environmental Issues, Training Youth
to be Leaders in EE, Correlating Programs to
Standards, and Creating Quality EE Materials.
Certification of Environmental Educators
CAEE provides a certification process to ensure that
environmental educators meet the highest
standards of professional practice. This program
outlines recommendations for the level of
knowledge and abilities educators need to provide
high quality environmental education. Participants
can apply for certification by submitting a portfolio
for peer review. Portfolios can be completed
through a self-guided process or through CAEE’s
Online Course: Principles and Foundations of
Environmental Education.
Annual Awards and Recognition Program
The Environmental Education Awards for Excellence
honor leadership in developing effective,
cooperative, cross-sector environmental education
by annually acknowledging organizations and
individuals for significant contributions to the field
of environmental education.
Implementing EE in Schools Toolkit
The toolkit provides teachers, schools, and districts
information, resources, and a menu of action steps
to implement environmental education.
Diversity and Inclusiveness Initiative
CAEE is working to ensure that inclusive
environmental education opportunities exist
throughout the state so that everyone has the
opportunity to learn about the environment where
they live in a culturally relevant way. Our goals
include: increasing the value of inclusiveness
within environmental education, increasing the
diversity of environmental educators in Colorado,
and increasing the diversity of audiences served.

 Foster Collaboration
We bring together Colorado environmental educators to pursue innovative education and engagement
strategies.
Advancing EE Conference
The annual conference offers a multitude of
opportunities to learn about environmental education
activities, current research, innovative teaching
techniques; to discuss new resources; and to network
and share experiences. It offers more than fifty
sessions with topics ranging from grant writing to
wildlife, astronomy, or stewardship.
West Slope EE Conference
This new one-day conference offers opportunities for
both formal and nonformal educators outside of the
front range to learn about environmental education
activities, current research, innovative teaching
techniques; to discuss new resources; and to network
and share experiences. It offers panels and
presentations on topics ranging from grant writing to
wildlife, or stewardship.
Email Groups and Mailing Lists
These tools provide a timely means for announcing
specific discussions and news regarding topics such
as teaching methods, emerging issues, grant
opportunities, and upcoming trainings. Send your
Mobilize Support
We champion EE at all levels by advocating for policies, partnerships and philanthropy to support EE.
Environmental Education Plan Support
CAEE supported the Colorado State Board of
Education in adopting a state environmental
education plan in 2012. CAEE is continuing to work
with the Department of Education and the
Department of Natural Resources to help support
strategies in the plan. The plan creates a coordinated
strategy between the varied stakeholders in
environmental and public education to ensure that all
learners have an opportunity to learn about the
environment where they live.
Advocacy Support
CAEE's efforts focus on building support for
environmental education on a broad scale. They
promote and enhance opportunities to make
environmental education a key societal priority. Our
current goals include: developing Colorado support
for amending the Elementary and Secondary

Environmental Education Directory and Map
The Environmental Education Directory provides a
means of connecting those looking for program
resources with those providing them. This directory
lists more than 600 environmental education
activities by topic, age level, and service area.

Careers in Natural Resources Initiative
In collaboration with the Colorado Youth Corps
Association, CAEE facilitates a network of over 250
professionals all working to ensure youth from all
backgrounds have pathways into natural resource
careers. The network has produced a How-To Guide
for Pursuing Natural Resources Careers, a career
training network, a web portal for career information,
and facilitates Work Gone Wild.
Education Act reauthorization to include the No Child
Left Inside Amendment; empowering the Colorado
environmental education community to advocate for
environmental education; and support for
implementation of HB1131, the Colorado Kids
Outdoors Grant Program Act signed into law on May
27, 2010.
Shared Outcomes in EE
By bringing together practitioners, evaluators, and
funders, CAEE hopes to create a framework and tools
to: 1) Demonstrate the role of EE in improving the
quality of life in Colorado, 2)
Build capacity for evaluation
within EE Organizations, 3)
Provide a framework for
evaluating EE across and among
rganizations, 4) Align the needs
of funders and EE practitioners.
