General Notes
1. General basis for dimensioning is as follows:
Motor insulation class: The insulation material is Class F.
Temperature rise class: Class B.
The overload capability for converter & inverters will meet the overload specification by Mill builder
and conforming Standards.
Converter transformers overloads
The duty classes of converter transformer will be matching with Design Parameter of the relevant
Drives and Motors.
Incomer Converter Overloads:
Most stringent duty of 150% for 60 sec for every 300 sec is considered for the Multi-drive lineup
converters.
Inverters overloads:
Overload capability of the inverters will match that of the corresponding motor.
Motor Overloads:
Mill: - 115% Continuous and overload of 150% for 60 sec for every 300 sec based on the data available
in Contract.
POR & Tension Reel: - Overload of 150% for 60 sec for every 300 sec based on the data available in
Contract.
Ambient temperature for converter and inverter design is 35 deg C.
Ambient temperature for motors is 50 deg C.
Motor & component list received from OEM (CMIFPE) “1248 -Motor List- RevA”, provides the basic
loads for design and calculation
4. Dimensioning of the Incoming Supply Unit, Inverters and ABB Motors is done using an ABB
proprietary package named Drive Size.

6. Power Electronic Devices are suitably selected for the protection, in case of power failure during
regeneration.
7. IGBT safe junction temperature limit is 125 degree centigrade. Cushion for temperature margin is on
the positive side and is adequate.

ANNEX-1
Formulae:
Note:
The motor is rated for 100% of the indicated nominal torque continuously (Except Mill)
The motor is rated for 115% of the indicated nominal torque continuously (for Mill)
All motors are rated for 150% of overload for 60 seconds every 300 seconds cycle
Therefore, Current (I) = (Transformer power in VA)/ (Sqrt. (3)*Transformer Secondary Voltage in Volt)
= (1500*1000)/1.73*690
= 1256.6 A
As per Multi drive Catalogue, I continuous current for the selected ISU is 1164 A
From the transformer sizing calculation in the document it could be found that the RMS power of the
transformer is more than the RMS power deliverability of the ISU.
Since, transformer current (1256.6 A) is more than that of ISU current (1164 A) and RMS deliverability is
more than that of the ISU, the selected transformer is suitable for the application.
