The Feast of the Epiphany

Greetings of peace.

On Monday, January 8, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. That day officially brings the
end of the Christmas season. This seems like an appropriate time to thank various people who went above and
beyond to make our many Advent and Christmas celebrations so wonderful. We extend a big thank-you to all of
the following: Fr. Frank Sevola, the Guardian of the Shrine’s Franciscan community, and all of the friars; The Arch
Street Band; Joanne Hidaka, our church decorator extraordinaire; all of our Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers; the
terrific paid staff and volunteers; and all of you who inspire us by participating in the Shrine’s communal worship.

Have a holy and safe week!

A Message from
Sister Lisa Marie Valentini, MSC
Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Mission Appeals 2017

Can you believe that we are already a week into 2018? As we come to the end of the Christmas season,
the Three Kings remind us that this is a time of giving.

As you know, each year we are asked to become more conscious of and more involved in the Mission
Activity of the Catholic Church throughout the world, by participating in the Mission Co-op Program of the
Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Next weekend, January 13th and 14th, Sr. Lisa Marie Valentini, MSC, a Missionary Sister of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus from Pennsylvania, who has been working in Mission countries since 1983, will come to the
Shrine and share with us on behalf of her Congregation.

The MSC Sisters were founded in 1900 – and are currently serving in 21 countries throughout the world.
Sister Lisa began her Mission work in Perú, serving 5 years in Lima. Then she spent time serving God’s
people in Mexico and Haiti before being sent to the Dominican Republic. Sister Lisa was on Mission in the
Dominican Republic from 2000 until 2009 and continues to host groups of young Missionaries in Mission
Immersion Experiences there. In fact, this past Summer, there were five groups of Missionaries who visited
the D.R. with Sister Lisa, spreading the Good News of God’s love, and there are already five groups
preparing to respond to God’s call to Mission in the D.R. in 2018! In March of last year, Sister had a
wonderful opportunity to visit her Sisters in India and is anxious to share with us about their wonderful
ministry.

So, today, as we participate in this Holy Mass, please keep in mind that next weekend Sister Lisa Valentini,
MSC has been invited to speak with us about the Missions and the work of her community, the Missionary
Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Mission Co-op Appeal gives us a chance to respond to Jesus’ mandate to “Go out to the ends of the
earth and spread the Good News.”

As a sign of our gratitude to God for all that He has given us, in particular for sending His Son Jesus to us,
let us plan to be generous in next week’s second collection so that MSC Sisters throughout the world will be
able to live up to their call “to be the heart of God on earth. ” May God reward our generosity with the
“hundredfold” He promises.

May our gratitude for the gift of our FAITH be reflected by our generosity in the 2nd collection on the
weekend of our Mission Appeal, January 13th & 14th – knowing that in this way we will share in the
Mission work of our Church and support the MSC Sisters throughout the world. May God bless you always!
