TECHNOLOGY TO DIAGNOSE AND IMPROVE YOUR GAME

T
he grand plan for Cassique always included a state
of the art learning center, says Carol Preisinger.
She is a LPGA Master Professional, Kiawah Island
Club Director of Instruction and 2017 LPGA Teacher
of the Year. Preisinger also said the change in ownership
from Buddy Darby/Leonard Long to Charlotte based
South Street Partners; locally known as Kiawah Partners,
delayed completion of the facility until six months ago.
Tours of the facility were scheduled with local media
shortly after its christening, but then along came Irma.
So they were rescheduled for Dec. 14.
Snuggled amongst the dunes at the east side of the
driving range, the manor styled structure is an impressive
sight. The interior is no less grand; chromed coffee urns,
snack table, and not one, or two or three, but four never
empty candy jars adorn the entrance to training nirvana.
Each of three bays house a specific set of technologies,
each of which casts you as the lead character in a trove of
video games designed to make you a better golfer.
Bay 1 hosts ForeSight Quad, a set of four cameras used
to track ball and club data at impact. This data is coupled
with TrackMan 4, which uses Doppler radar technology
to map the ball’s trajectory after impact, and produce a
picture capable of diagnosing launch and attack angles,
for example. The final component of Bay 1 is the Science
and Motion (SAM) Puttlab.
SAM uses ultrasound technology to produce graphics
which analyze 28 different components of your putting,

Newly re-elected Seabrook Island
Utility (SIU) commissioner and
subsequently elected SIU chairman Jim
Bannwart delivered the utility’s report for
November. He said the utility generated
a net positive cash flow of $6,500 in
November. He also noted the backup
generator for pump station 2 was online,
making it the second pump station to
benefit from the added assurance. The
“lump of coal,” he said, came in the form
of Charleston Water’s notification they
would be charging an additional 4%
starting in March 2018. Responding to a
question from the mayor, Bannwart said
the pass through charge would amount to
a couple of dollars per month for residents.
Councilmember John Gregg said the
club’s long range planning committee
hadn’t met since his last report, but
he expects a meeting in January.
Public safety met on Dec. 11 to review
the comprehensive emergency plan.
Consultant Scott made recommendations
which altered the way damage will be
categorized in the future. Ed Maher’s
motion to adopt Federal Emergency
Management Agency guidelines for
assessing storm damage was accepted. The
revised guidelines will be added to the
appendix to assist volunteers in the field.
There was no update on public
assistance from FEMA regarding;
• Additional funds for Matthew
debris removal after discovering
insurance would not cover removal
of a downed tree on municipal
grounds.
• The utility’s application for
additional grants from FEMA, or a
“mitigation grant” to help with the
much discussed renovations along
the main entrance to Seabrook.
However, Gregg said Tommy West,
contract manager of SIU, has agreed to
a recovery-scoping meeting scheduled
for Jan. 15 to quantify overtime hours
expended.
Gregg concluded his report by
reminding attendees that disaster recovery
training exercises will be held Jan. 10 and
11 starting at 9 a.m. in council chambers.
The two, half day, sessions will focus on
hurricane preparation and recovery.
Councilmember Skip Crane said the
communications and strategic planning
committee would be meeting on Jan. 9. He
said the town had increased the number of
tweets they send out, which was increasing
the town’s visibility. Crane concluded
his report by saying Seabrook would be
participating in the annual meeting of the
Municipal Association of South Carolina
for the third straight year. The gathering is
a trove of not only the issues facing small
towns, but also solutions to common issues
forged by experience.
Councilmember John Wells proposed
funding a wildlife preservation effort in
conjunction with the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration. Video
footage taken on Seabrook prompted
concern about human interaction with
dolphins feeding at Captain Sams inlet.
The estimated $10,000 in funding will pay
for NOAA staff to routinely visit the beach
at prime feeding times for the purpose of
education and protection. The money will
be well spent, said Wells, who pointed to
the necessity of support from NOAA and
conservation groups to approve periodic
beach re-nourishment projects. He also
said the Seabrook Island Property Owners
Association would be approached to help
with funding the program. Wells stated
he wasn’t sure if Kiawah could be counted
on to chip in for the program.
Housekeeping issues consumed much
of the agenda, but didn’t take up much
clock time. 2018 meeting dates were
approved, along with re-appointment of
the town’s attorney Steven Brown. Faye
Allbritton was approved for another
2-year stint as clerk/treasurer, along with
a number of committee appointments.

The second reading of Ordinance
2017-05 met little resistance. The measure
rezones 2718 Old Oak Walk for transfer
to the Greenspace Conservancy. Jeri
Finke, newly elected council member and
still president of the GC, recused herself
last month, but wasn’t present to raise any
eyebrows for the second reading.
Ordinance 2017-06 was also read for
the second time and dealt with employee
benefits in a move the mayor characterized
as formalizing a previously informal
understanding. The measure clarifies
retirees as eligible for town benefits,
but without Seabrook contributing
the employer portion of premiums, or
subsidizing the employee portion the way
they do with active staff members.
Miscellaneous business included
resolution 2017-07, a measure to
temporarily waive Seabrook’s prohibition
on the discharge of firearms. Fifty deer
will be baited and shot as a part of the
island’s deer management plan. The
strategy will be executed between Dec. 19,
2017 and March 1, 2018 by Jim Jordan, an
employee of the Town of Kiawah Island
and owner/operator of Low Country
Wildlife Specialists.
There was no mention of cost, but
the last time LCWS was tasked with the
job, compensation was $325 per critter
for a total of $16,250. Asked if the town
has considered birth control for the
deer population similar to a successful
program on Kiawah, Heather Patton of
SIPOA replied, saying the solution had
been considered by the environmental
committee until Jordan informed them
the plan would not work on Seabrook the
way it had Kiawah. Harvested meat from
the endeavor will go to needy families.
There being no citizen’s comments/
questions, and no further business, the
meeting was adjourned.

Asked if all this equipment and technology
was an impediment to the art that is golf,
Preisinger was of two minds. Yes, it’s a lot of
data, she agreed, but the LPGA Teacher of the
Year disagreed it was any sort of impediment.
“This [equipment/data] allows me to
deliver a unique, customized solution for
each of our members. Our goal is to make

people better. If we do that, they have more
fun, and if they have more fun, they’ll use
the learning center more,” she said. Now
with “learning” out of the way, visitors
were ready for door number three.
Bay 3 is home to the new club fitting
center. Repair services are also available,
but now that you’ve fixed everything else,
why not take good hard look at all of the

match you to clubs that are the perfect length,
have the right flex and kick point, and correct
weight. They can also match you to a putter

fitness room dedicated to exercises focused
exclusively on golf. You can maintain your
golf readiness, accelerate your training, and
help avoid injuries or recover from one.
The visit was highlighted by cameo
visits from PGA Tour golfers Ben Martin
and Russell Henley. Both are also Kiawah
Island Club Ambassador Golfers, and
represent the island when they play.
They use much of the same equipment
mentioned above themselves.
“Kiawah is great. It’s easy to relax and
still practice, especially with the addition of
the learning center,” said Henley. He also
said Voysey’s was his favorite Charleston
restaurant, and the group was headed in that
very direction.
“Oh, you gotta have the short rib sandwich.
By now, it’s been cooking for days,” swooned

oil workshop

he Seabrook Island Artist Guild is
excited to offer another two-day
oil painting workshop with Mark
Horton, well-known Charleston artist
and co-owner of Horton Hayes Fine
Art gallery. This will be Horton’s ninth
workshop at Seabrook. His classes fill
quickly so register early. The class will
be held on Jan. 22 and 23 at the Oyster
Catcher community center.
This course is designed for oil painters
of all levels who want to take their work to
the next level. Horton will focus on ways
to improve as a painter by emphasizing
composition, design, value and color
temperature and learning how to utilize
these basic elements to best express and
complete a successful painting regardless
of its subject matter. There will be
explorations of techniques to improve
composition to best express what the artist
wants to communicate to the viewer.
Horton is particularly fascinated with
the effects of light and weather upon the
landscape. He paints beyond a literal
interpretation of a scene to portray nature
in a way that reflects his own ideas and
sensibilities while capturing the spirit,
color and changing light of a place.
The workshop will focus on how to
better “see” nature and subject matter
and then apply that knowledge using
photographs as reference to compose,
understand, and interpret the image.
The workshop will address all aspects
of painting including materials, set-up,
color mixing, various paint application
methods, surfaces and techniques as
well as the fundamentals of design and
composition. Emphasis will be on helping
students discover their own personal style
and process in creating their work.
Specific subject matter within
the landscape will include skies and
atmosphere, trees, and the incorporation
of figures, animals and/or structures into
your paintings. Students may bring their
own photographic reference material
to work from or use reference photos
provided by the instructor.
The cost of the two-day workshop is
$195 for art guild members and $225 for

to play in the Volvo Car Open’s main draw for 2018. The
two top 10 players, Garcia and Konta, and 18-year-old
Bellis, will be joined in the growing Charleston player
field by defending Volvo Car Open champion Daria
Kasatkina, U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens,
two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová and U.S.
Open finalist Madison Keys.
The Volvo Car Open will take place March 31 - April
8, on Daniel Island.
2018 will be the first time playing in the Volvo Car
Open main draw for Konta and Bellis. Garcia will
compete for the sixth time in the Volvo Car Open singles
field. She won the Charleston doubles title in 2016, the
same year she won the doubles title in Roland Garros.

semifinals. On her way to the Beijing title, she defeated
Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina, ranked No. 2 and No.
3 at the time. Her match against Svitolina was named the
‘Best Match of the Year’ by WTA, as Garcia completed

harleston's premiere year round farmers market,
the Johns Island Farmers Market, begins its fifth
year of operation every Saturday from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. The market is easily found on the campus of
Charleston Collegiate School, 2024 Academy Drive,
Johns Island.
Patrons can look forward to a joy filled atmosphere
with upwards of 60 new and returning farmers and
vendors, a variety of artisans, food trucks, local music,
and enjoyable activities for all ages each week.
The variety of goods that can be found at JIFM
include but are not limited to local, naturally grown
seasonal produce, spices, herbs, essential oils, bone broth,
kombucha, handmade arts and crafts, baked sweets, tea,
plants, honey, chocolates, cheeses, jams, canned goods,
take & bake foods, cider tonics, organic skin care, olives

O
n Dec. 13, the Charleston County
Park & Recreation Commission’s
executive director was honored
with a statewide award. At their annual
conference, the South Carolina Recreation
and Park Association presented their
Professional of the Year award to David
Bennett.
The SCRPA Professional of the
Year nominee must be in the parks and
recreation profession at least 15 years, a
member of SCRPA for at least five years,
and professionally certified through the
National Recreation and Park Association.
This award considers service, leadership,
and character.
Charleston native David Bennett has
devoted his entire professional career
to serving in the park and recreation
industry. David began his career as a part-
time employee at CCPRC 30 years ago,
and was soon promoted to full time as
recreation program specialist, where he
started the popular Lowcountry Cajun
Festival at James Island County Park. He
was named chief operating officer in 2010,
and became executive director of the
agency in 2017 following the retirement
of Tom O’Rourke.
Among many accomplishments
throughout his career, Bennett led the
efforts in creating CCPRC’s ten core
values, which are now considered the
guiding principles of the agency.
Bennett is a nationally certified park
and recreation professional and has degree in Park, Recreation and Tourism
served on the boards of NRPA, SCRPA, Management from Mars Hill College. He

Time is a key factor
in investing

W
ith the arrival of the New Year,
many of us will pause and
ponder the age-old question:
“Who knows where the time goes?” And,
as is always the case, none of us really do
know. However, wherever the time goes, it
will usually be a key factor in your success
as an investor.
Time can affect how you invest, and
the results of your investing, in different
ways:
Growth potential – Contrary to myth,
there’s no real way to “get rich quick”
when investing. To build wealth, you need
patience and time. If you own quality
investments with growth potential, and
you give them years, in fact, decades, to
increase in value, your perseverance may
be rewarded. Of course, there are no
guarantees, and you’ll need the discipline
to withstand the inevitable downturns
along the way. But in describing how long
he likes to keep his investments, renowned
investor Warren Buffet says his favorite
holding period is “forever.”
Targeted goals – To accumulate
resources for retirement, you need to save
and invest throughout your working life.
But along the way, you’ll probably also
have some shorter-term goals: making
a down payment on a home, sending
your children to college, taking a round-
the-world trip, and so on. Each of these
goals has a specific time limit and usually
requires a specific amount of money, so
you will need to choose the appropriate
investments.
Risk tolerance – The element of time
also will affect your tolerance for risk. When
you have many decades to go until you
retire, you can afford to take more risk with
your investments because you have time to
overcome periods of market volatility. But
when you’re on the verge of retirement, you

may want to lower the risk level in your
portfolio. For example, you may want to
begin moving away from some of your more
aggressive, growth-oriented investments
and move toward more income-producing
vehicles that offer greater stability of
principal. Keep in mind, though, that even
during retirement, you’ll need your portfolio
to provide enough growth opportunity at
least to help keep you ahead of inflation.
Thus far, we have looked at ways in
which time plays a role in how you invest.
But there’s also an aspect of time that you
may want to keep out of your investment
strategies. Specifically, you might not
want to try to “time” the market.
The biggest problem with market
timing is it’s just too hard. You essentially
have to be right twice, selling at a market
top and buying at the bottom.
Also, as humans, we appear to be
somewhat wired to think that an activity,
especially a long-running activity, will
simply continue. So, when the market
goes up, we seem to expect it to keep
rising, and when the market drops, we
think it will continue dropping. This can
lead to big mistakes, such as selling after a
major market drop even though that can
be the time when it may be much smarter
to buy because prices are low.
As we’ve seen, the way you interact
with time can affect your investment
efforts. So, think carefully about how you
can put all the days, months and years on
your side. Time is the one asset you can’t
replenish, so use it wisely.
