Lesson Duration: 120 Minutes Date: 6 Dec 17

Essential Questions:

What is the role of the international community in creating and maintaining social justice?

What are the consequences of social injustice?

Enduring Understandings

 Our decisions and actions matter; they have social, environmental, economic, and
political consequences.
 Political systems distribute power, privilege, and wealth in different ways, some more
justly than others.
 A just society respects human diversity and recognizes universal, equal, and
inalienable human rights.
 There is no them or over there: we all belong to the human species, our concerns
are interdependent, and we are part of the natural world.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes:

1.Students will be able to understand refugee issues. (knowledge)


2.Students will be able to answer questions about the reasons refugees flee their home
country. (Knowledge)
3.Students will be able to empathize with refugees and the journey they must take to
safety. (Attitude)
4.Students will work independently and collaboratively to complete the lesson’s

Lesson Procedure

1. Lesson Introduction 15 Minutes

• Purple Paper Question


• Attendance

2. Development 100 Minutes

• What is a refugee and what are some issues that would cause them to flee their
country.
• Students will participate in a Think-Pair-Share
• Definitions
• Refugee/NGO
• Students will work in pairs to play: Against All Odds
• Upon completion of Against All Odds, students will come together to discuss their
experiences
• Students will also complete a reflection about their experience
• Ensure students take a break (Max 10 minutes)
• Complete all assignments that have not yet been completed

3. Closing 5 Minutes

• Answer any outstanding questions.


Ongoing Assessment and Evaluation

•Was the information in the presentation and activity understood by the students
(Assess Orally, reflection)
• Were the students able to demonstrate critical thinking while interacting with the
class? (Observe interaction)
