ENGLISH FOR ENGINEERING

“Engineering is often perceived as a hands-on,technical profession but there is increasing

demand for softer skills. After technical skills, research show that 55%of hiring managers in
the engineering sector think good communication skills are ‘essential’”(tully 2012).

English for Engineering

This course develops the English language skills of aspiring engineers, to support
them in implementing the basic engineering design process: understand product
specifications, brainstorm solutions, build prototypes, test functionality, redesign, write
release notes, and deliver a product. Participants practice communicating effectively in
meetings, by email, and on the phone. They have the opportunity to improve their English
reading and writing skills in summarizing and explaining content from engineering journals.
Finally, participants research a topic, design a poster, and present at a public capstone poster
session.

Career Readiness for Engineers

This course focuses on preparing to enter the engineering job market. Participants develop an
elevator pitch, write a resume, and practice interviewing. They meet engineers who are
working in the field as well as a recruiter who discusses the specific engineering skills that
are currently in high demand. In addition, participants visit the Boston University College of
Engineering and meet engineering graduate students who share their experience and answer
participants’ questions.
Product description

Cambridge English for Engineering develops the communication skills and specialist English
language knowledge of engineering professionals, enabling them to communicate more
confidently and effectively with colleagues and customers.

The ten standalone units cover topics common to all kinds of engineering (including civil,
electrical and mechanical) such as procedures and precautions; monitoring and control; and
engineering design. Authentic activities, from describing technical problems and suggesting
solutions to working with drawings, make the course relevant and motivating.

The course requires no specialist knowledge on the part of the teacher and comprehensive
teacher's notes are available online. It is also ideal for self-study.

Key features
 A regular focus on technical and semi-technical vocabulary enables learners to
become familiar with and practise using the specialist language they need for work.

 Authentic texts and realistic tasks help prepare learners for their everyday working
lives.

 An emphasis on listening and speaking helps learners to develop their communicative

ability within this professional field.

 Extra practice material, photocopiable activities and teachers notes available online
offer valuable support for teachers and self-study students.

areas: Physical Technology & Science, Information Systems & Science
and Hardware/Software Systems. Stanford EE also has a unique culture of entrepreneurship.

Management Science and Engineering

The Department of Management Science and Engineering aims to promote research
and education related to the information-intensive, technology-based economy. The
department has great breadth, covering the knowledge, tools and methods required to make
decisions and shape policies, configure organizational structures, design engineering systems
and solve operational problems.
Materials Science and Engineering
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is concerned with the relation between
processing, structure, and properties of materials, with the goal of developing new materials
and processes through fundamental understanding. It brings together in a unified discipline
materials-related developments in physical metallurgy, polymer science, ceramics, biology
and the physics and chemistry of solids.

Mechanical Engineering
The programs in the Department of Mechanical Engineering are designed to provide
background for a variety of careers. The discipline is very broad, but it is generally

 rockets

In your community:

While it's unlikely anyone will be launching a rocket from your community anytime soon,
there is still an important role for aerospace engineers there.

Aerospace engineers design and manufacture communications satellites and ground based
