Advanced Placement Computer Science

Course no. 4036

Pre-AP Computer Science is an introductory course in computer programming utilizing the JAVA programming language

Objectives:
At the completion of the course students will be able to:

1. design a program that is understandable, can be adapted to changing circumstances, and has the potential to be reused in part or in
whole.

2. use the design goals of reuse in program implementation.

3. analyze and test programs to determine if they meet specifications.

4. use standard data structures.

5.use standard algorithms.

6. have a working knowledge of the major hardware and software components of computer systems.

Text:

Course Outline:
I) Program design
A. Problem definiton
B. Program design
II) Program implementation
A. Implementation techniques
B. Programming constructs
C. Generic data types
III) Program analysis
A. Testing
B. Debugging
C. Understanding and modifying existing code
D. Handling errors-robust behavior
E. Reasoning about programs
F. Analysis of algorithms
G. Numerical limits
IV) Standard data structutres
A.Simple data types
B. Aggregate data types
C. Classes
V) Standard algorithms
A. Operations on data structures
B. Searching
C. Sorting

C. Types of systems
D. Responsible use of computer systems

Grading methods:
Students will take 3 written quizzes each six weeks and write 3 or more programs. They will also take a written six weeks test. The
quiz and program grades averaged together will comprise 50% of their six weeks grade. The other 50% will be the grade on the six
weeks test.
During the spring semester there will be opportunity for extra credit by attending AP exam prep sessions on Saturdays. Credit will
only be given to those who attend.

Attendance requirements:
Students must attend 90% of the class time. This applies to excused and unexcused absences. If a student fails to attend the required
number of classes, credit cannot be granted without making up time missed and approval from the Woodrow Wilson High School
Attendance Committee.

Instruction:
Students are expected to participate in class discussions and activities, complete homework assignments in a timely manner, and
attend outside tutoring sessions to facilitate the learning and application of course concepts.

Modifications:
Course modifications will be provided for any student whose Individual Educational Plan includes required modifications, academic
adjustments and auxiliary aid. It is the responsibility of the parent to make certain the teacher is aware of need.

All provisions and procedures of the Woodrow Wilson High School Academic Dishonesty Policy will be followed.
