Macbeth’s Relationships with Others

Throughout the whole play “Macbeth” relationships with others go from honorable to bad

news very quickly. During the play the character Macbeth goes crazy and burns down the

bridges he made before he became king. Shakespeare wrote this play to show what was going on

during his time period. Shakespeare was trying to get on King James good side so that his plays

could be performed. Shakespeare emphasizes toxic relationships in “Macbeth” by showing Lady

Macbeth and Macbeth’s downfall, Macbeth and the witches relationship, and Macbeth vs

Macduff.

First thing in the play “Macbeth” Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have a toxic relationship

throughout the whole play. Their relationship is toxic because in the beginning of the play Lady

Macbeth is controlling and evil. She wants to be man and have the power that all men have in

life unlike women. “Come to my women’s breasts and take my milk for gall, you murd’ring

minister” (I. v. 16). Lady Macbeth is power hungry and makes Macbeth kills King Duncan

which starts the downfall of Lady Macbeth. After Macbeth becomes king, he stops telling Lady

Macbeth about his plans and Lady Macbeth is upset because Macbeth will no long allow her to

help him. This makes Lady Macbeth go crazy and start sleep walking later in the book. In the

end Macbeth relationship is so up setting that Lady Macbeth kills herself so she doesn’t have to

deal with Macbeth not trusting her anymore. “My queen my lord is dead” (IV.iv.16). In the end

Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have a tragic ending of their relationship.

Additionally in the play Macbeth and the witches have a really unique relationship. It is

unique because the witches help Macbeth see the futures and then they don’t allow him to see the

future. The first time that Macbeth and the witches interact, the witches tell him to be king.

“Macbeth king of Scotland”. (I.i.3) Then second time Macbeth sees the witches they show him

the future but trick him and show him a fake future. Macbeth and the witches in the end are done

talking and Macbeth is upset with what they show him while he is looking in the future.

The last relationship that Macbeth destroys is his relationship with Macduff. He destroys

this relationship by acting crazy while being king. This make Macduff go to and get help to go to

war with Macbeth and get him out of power. While Macduff is gone, Macbeth decides to go and

kill Macduff’s family. “Thy was slayed, run mother” (IIII. iii.70). in the end Macduff wins the

war and becomes king of Scotland, and he does this by kill Macbeth. He kills Macbeth by cutting

his head off, while they are battling “Enters Macduff with Macbeths head” (V.viii.96). In the end

Macduff ends up winning his fight against Macbeth.

In the end the play “Macbeth” is a tragic play. Everyone has got what was coming for

them in the play. In the play Shakespeare emphasizes toxic relationships in Macbeth by showing

Lady Macbeth and Macbeth’s downfall, Macbeth and the witches’ relationship, and Macbeth

versus Macduff.
