NEBS Requirements
NEBS (Network Equipment-Building System) describes the environment of a typical United States
Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) central office (CO). NEBS is the most common set of
safety, spatial and environmental design guidelines applied to telecommunications equipment in the
United States. It is an industry requirement, but not a legal requirement. Telcordia now manages
the NEBS specifications.
NEBS Level 3 is a term from Bellcore special report SR-3580, and means the equipment meets all
of the requirements of GR-63-CORE and GR-1089-CORE. NEBS Level 3 has strict specifications for
fire suppression, thermal margin testing, vibration resistance (earthquakes), air flow patterns,
acoustic limits, failover and partial operational requirements (such as chassis fan failures), failure
severity levels, RF emissions and tolerances, and testing/certification requirements.
Alteon NEBS-certified platforms meet the NEBS Level 3 design guidelines requirements,
The following Alteon platform(s) are NEBS certified: 4416 6420
Note: In addition to the physical Alteon platforms, Alteon supports a virtual platform. See Alteon
VA Installation and Configuration, page 71 for details.

• For additional technical information, see Appendix A - Specifications, page 119.
Note: Remove the desiccant bags delivered together with the platform and dispose of them
according to your country’s legislation.
Warning: All brackets must be assembled with proper washers on the bracket screw heads.
Note: After you mount the platform, ensure that there is adequate air flow surrounding it.
Warning: Reliable grounding of the rack and all rack-mounted equipment should be maintained.
Particular attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the
branch circuit (for example, use of power strips).
Warning: The DC mains, supplied from the building installation, must be insulated from the AC
mains with a double or reinforced insulation. It also must be entirely connected to protective earth
within the building.
Warning: For the DC mains, the positive pole must be connected to the ground through the
building installation.
Warning: Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of air flow
required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.
Warning: Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous condition is not
achieved due to uneven mechanical loading.
Warning: Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit
and the effect that overloading of the circuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply
wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing
this concern.
Caution: If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of
the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given
to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature
specified in Appendix A - Specifications, for the specific platform.
Notes
• The areas between the rack mounting brackets and the chassis must be cleaned and antioxidant
must be applied before bonding together.
• This all applies to the front mounting ears, rear mounting ears and the middle mounting ears
that are used with platform rack mounting.
• The front and rear brackets are mandatory and the mid brackets are optional.
• 19” rack mount brackets or 23” rack mount brackets can be provided per customer demand.
• If the platform is equipped with an AC power supply, connecting a ground wire is not required,
but is recommended.
Caution: Ensure that all your ports are using shielded cabling.
Note: Radware supplies a RJ-45–to–DE-9 adapter cable to connect the console port of the
platform to a console PC.
2. Insert the DE-9 connector of the RJ-45–to–DE-9 adapter cable to the console PC.
3. If you are going to use port 6/MNG 1 for out-of-band management, connect a cable to the port
labeled 6/MNG 1.
4. Connect the traffic-port cables to the 4408 platform, and take into consideration that each port
uses a specific CPU core. Therefore, to ensure optimal performance, input traffic and output
traffic should not use the same core. the four cores are numbered 0–3. If you are going to use
in-band management, refer to Table 15 - Port-to-Core Usage with In-Band Management, page

Platform Installation
This section covers the first part of hardware installation; installing the platform, and includes the
following topics:
• Platform Dimensions, page 54
• Prerequisites, page 54
• Installing the NEBS Platform, page 58
• Grounding the Platform, page 59
• Connecting the Cables, page 55
Platform Dimensions
For rack mounting, the following options are available:
• Per ETSI 600mm x 600mm ETSI frame on integrated front frame mounting ears.
• Frame mounting brackets are required for a 23" EIA frame. Rear mounting brackets are
recommended in both instances for Central Office Environment.
Each platform requires 2U of space.
Prerequisites
Before installing a platform, the following must be considered:
• Equipment You Will Need, page 54.
• Rack/Cabinet Cooling Guidelines, page 57.
• Mounting Options and Stabilization, page 57.
• Weight Distribution Within a Rack, page 58.
• Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and Safety Procedures, page 58.
Caution: Ensure that all your ports are using shielded cabling.
NEBS Requirements
This section describes the NEBS requirements for installation of the NEBS-certified Alteon platform
and rack in which the platform is mounted.
There are three NEBS levels:
• NEBS Level 1 means a very low threshold of equipment hazards and network degradation.
NEBS Level 1 addresses the personnel and equipment safety requirements of GR-63-CORE and
GR-1089-CORE. Operability requirements are not enforced for NEBS Level 1 certification. It is
primarily used for getting prototypes into lab trials. RBOCs require all equipment deployed by
CLECs to be NEBS Level 1 certified.
• NEBS Level 2 addresses equipment operability in a controlled environment (usually data
centers) that will not be subjected to environmental stress. Because of ambiguity, this level of
certification is rarely (if ever) used.
• NEBS Level 3 is a term from a Bellcore special report, SR-3580, and means the equipment
meets all of the requirements of GR-63-CORE and GR-1089-CORE. NEBS Level 3 has strict
specifications for fire suppression, thermal margin testing, vibration resistance (earthquakes),
air flow patterns, acoustic limits, failover and partial operational requirements (such as chassis
fan failures), failure severity levels, RF emissions and tolerances, and testing/certification
requirements.
Warning: The intrabuilding ports of the equipment or subassembly is suitable for connection to
intrabuilding or unexposed wiring or cabling only. The intra-building ports of the equipment or
subassembly MUST NOT be metallically connected to interfaces that connect to the OSP or its wiring.
These interfaces are designed for use as intra-building interfaces only (Type 2 or Type 4 ports as
described in GR-1089-CORE, Issue 6) and require isolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The
addition of Primary Protectors is not sufficient protection to connect these interfaces metallically to
OSP wiring.
Grounding Prerequisites
• This unit can be configured to DC-I only
• Only copper cables, 6 AWG or larger, must be used for grounding purposes.
• When mounting a Alteon platform with a DC power supply, battery return terminals must be in
the configuration of an Isolated DC Return (DC-I).
• The Alteon platform must be connected to the grounding wire by means of the grounding screw
using a listed two-hole copper compression lug (Panduit LCD6-10A-L).
• Bare conductors must be coated with antioxidant before making crimp connections.
• The primary ground screws are M6 and should be installed with a torque of 4.30Nm, +/-
0.43Nm.
• A star washer (tooth washer) must be used next to opposite sides of the grounding lug or
terminal (see Figure 20 - Proper Grounding, page 56). This provides the proper locking
mechanism. The internal tooth washer removes paint from the chassis to establish a metal-to-
metal contact to the unplated surface.
The following diagram shows the proper grounding connection to an Alteon platform.
Lug or
Chasis

Environmental Requirements
To ensure proper function of the platform, ensure that the environment in which it is to be used
fulfills the environmental requirements.
The environmental values must be tested and proven in the planned platform configuration, that is,
the delivered platform and other third-party products you want to integrate.
Notes:
• Operating temperatures refer to the temperature of the air circulating at the air intake of the
platform and not to component temperatures.
• Some of the climatic values may exceed the specification of some components (for example,
hard disks). Radware cannot guarantee the functionality of third party products that are handled
or operated out of their specifications, the environmental conditions may be limited to the
specifications of these components.
See Appendix A - Specifications, page 119 for the environmental requirements.
Power Requirements
For DC, ensure that a suitable -48.0 VDC to -60 VDC rated power source is within reach of the
system.
Warning: The DC system is supplied by a TNV-2 voltage. This voltage is considered hazardous.
Ensure that the external power supply meets the relevant safety standards. Ensure that TNV-2 is
separated from dangerous voltages (mains) through double or reinforced insulation.
Caution: Do not obstruct the ventilation openings at the top, sides and back of the platform.
Warning: To avoid personal injury or damage to the equipment, plan your installation so that
(within the limitations of equipment and cabling):
• The weight of the equipment is evenly distributed in the rack.
• The heaviest units are mounted nearer the bottom of the rack.
Uneven mechanical loading of the rack may cause toppling.
Caution: Unstable platform installation in a rack can cause the rack to topple over. Therefore, if
your platform is the only one in the rack, make sure to mount it in the lowest part of the rack. If
other platforms are installed in one rack, start with the heaviest component at the bottom. If the
rack is equipped with stabilizing devices, make sure that they are installed and extended so that the
rack is secure. Then proceed to mount or service the platform. Do not tilt the platform forward or
backward when removing it from the package as components at the bottom could be damaged.
Radware strongly recommends that you use an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad
when installing or upgrading a platform. Electronic components can be extremely sensitive to
electrostatic discharge (ESD). After removing the component from its protective wrapper or from
the platform, place the component flat on a grounded, static-free surface. Do not slide the
component over any surface If an ESD station is not available, you can avoid damage resulting from
ESD by wearing an anti-static wrist strap (available at electronics stores) that is attached to an
active electrical ground. Note that a platform may not be grounded if it is unplugged.
Notes
• There is one earth ground located at the back of the platform.
• There are three ESD bonding points, two on the front and one on the back of the platform.
Warning: Do not mount a single platform at the top of the rack. A top-heavy rack can tip, causing
damage to equipment and injury to personnel.
Warning: Do not use the power module handles for lifting the platform. Ensure that you have the
appropriate equipment to safely lift and mount the platform securely. To avoid personal injury or
damage to the equipment, use two persons for the installation procedure.
Caution: Failure to observe proper grounding practices may cause a variety of noise, electrostatic
discharge, and RFI problems.
Note: The primary ground screws are M6 and should be installed with a torque of 4.30Nm, +/-
0.43Nm.
Warning: Reliable grounding of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained. The rack must be
properly grounded. Connect at least one ground wire from the platform chassis to the rack.
Typically, the platform has one or two special ground screws on the back panel near the screws that
secure the power supply.
DC Power Cable
Power is introduced to the platform at the DC inlet located in the rear of the platform. The
recommended power cable is a 6 AWG gauge that meets the specifications for this platform. There
are two lugs for each DC feed.
Caution: Always check with your local building authorities for wire sizing requirements for your
environment. The installation must comply with the 1993 National Electric Code (NEC) and other
applicable codes. The DC power inputs must only be attached to approved Telephone Network
Voltage (TNV) or SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) branch circuits. Branch circuits must comply with
all requirements called for in these safety standards: IEC 60950, EN 60950, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No.
60950. Attaching inputs to non-TNV/SELV approved power sources will cause the system to fail
compliance with safety regulations. The ground wire must be connected to a reliable earth ground
connection to comply with Class 1 Equipment requirements.
Warning: Multiple power sources are present. Service only by qualified service personnel.
Wire Signal
Earth Ground PE GND (Primary Earth Ground)
Input Power -48VDC/-60VDC
Return -48VDC/-60VDC RETURN
Note: Heat shrink should be placed as close to the hole as possible (0.15") apart.
Caution: To cable a DC system, read all cautions and warnings, properly ground the equipment by
following the grounding procedures, and follow these steps. This procedure assumes that the power
modules are pre-installed in the platform.
Warning: Cables may or may not be pre-installed at the branch circuit or power distribution unit. If
the DC power cables are not connected to the branch circuit or power distribution unit, connect the
power cables to the chassis before connecting the DC power cables to the external power source. If
the DC power cables are connected to the branch circuit or power distribution unit, a qualified
service person must confirm that the power to the cables is terminated (off) before continuing the
steps to attach the cables to the power modules. In either case, use a multimeter to check the
power module end of the terminals to confirm there is no power present.
4. Using the appropriate tool, carefully remove the plastic covering over the terminal blocks.
5. Confirm that there is no power to the chassis lug bolts. Using a multimeter, measure between
the two lugs and then measure between the chassis ground and each lug. If the DC potential is
3.0VDC or less, then power is not present.
6. Attach the DC power cables (input and return) to the dual lug bolts on each chassis power feed.
7. Using a torque wrench, tighten the nuts with a recommended torque setting of 35.5 to 38.5
inch-pounds. Make sure all DC leads are fastened securely.
8. Replace the plastic cover over the terminal blocks.
9. Verify that the power module circuit breakers are in the ON position.
10. Break the tag out or lockout seals on the branch circuit or power distribution unit.
11. Apply power by closing the branch circuit or power distribution unit. The OOS indicator LED will
glow solid red and the other LEDs will go dark. The OOS will not go dark and the IS indicator LED
will not illuminate until the external power circuit breakers are closed.
12. Verify that all FRU LEDs illuminate and the IS LED of the power module is green, and the OOS
LED is dark.
To startup a DC system
1. Put on an ESD wrist strap.
2. Connect the strap to the platform by attaching the front or rear ESD jack/ESD snap.
3. Mount the grounding cable to the Protective Earth connection lug if not done already.
4. Set the breakers on the power module faceplates to the OFF (tripped) position if they are not
already in this position.
5. Make sure that the external power feeds you plan to attach are powered off and cannot be
switched on while you are working.
6. Attach the power cables with 2 hole lugs to the DC power inlet in the rear of the platform.
7. Energize the power feeds at the external device.
8. Push the power module breakers to the ON position.
9. Verify that all LEDs illuminate and the In Service LED of the power module is green. The system
executes its normal start-up routine and is then ready to use.
Note: Ensure that the DC and DC return are connected correctly. Applying reversed power causes
damage to the electrolytic capacitors of the filter
Warning: Cover all open module slots and put all approved filler panels in place before turning on
power. This is necessary to properly cool the chassis and to avoid electrical shock and other possible
hazards. Slot covers and panels must remain in place during platform operation.
Note: If the power is disconnected and reconnected (for example, after the power cord is removed
and replaced, or after a power failure), the platform returns to its previous state. For example, if the
platform was running, and then you disconnect the power cord, when you reconnect the power cord,
the platform automatically switches on.
Initial Configuration
After installed, the platform requires some administrative configuration before it can be used
effectively.
Alteon supports the following interface options:
• A command line interface (CLI) text-based menu system for configuration and management
through a local terminal or through a remote Telnet or SSH session.
Note: For more information regarding CLI commands, see the Alteon Application Switch
Operating System Command Reference.
• SNMP support for access through the APSolute Vision management system or through network
management software such as HP OpenView.
Note: For more information regarding SNMP MIBs and the commands used to configure SNMP,
see the Alteon Application Switch Operating System Command Reference.
Alteon provides a console port, a management port, and network ports that can be used for
configuring and managing the Alteon platform. This section explains how to establish a connection
using these ports and to perform the initial management port configuration if required.
Note: Make sure the connectivity between your client station and the Alteon platform is not blocked
by a firewall.
Note: The procedure for configuring the management port for Alteon 4408 and 5208 is detailed
below.
Although Alteon can be managed from any network port, the exclusive management port, MNG 1
saves wasting a port that could otherwise be used for processing data and traffic. This management
port can use Telnet CLI, SSH CLI, SNMP, HTTP, or HTTPS, and is isolated from and does not
participate in the networking protocols that run on the network ports.
The management port must be configured with a static IP address, subnet mask, and default
gateway, and must be enabled before it can be used.
Note: Only management port MNG 1 is operational. The port labeled MNG 2 is reserved for future
use.
Note: For information regarding the various pin-outs of the communications connectors, see Serial
Cable Pin Assignment, page 133.
• When downgrading, the admin password returns to the default “admin.” If the Admin
password was changed, it will need to be re-configured after the downgrade.
Note: If you turn on the power to the Alteon platform only after connecting the console, you may
see the message "Type "maint" and press "Enter" to initiate", which refers to accessing the device's
maintenance mode and should be ignored.
Note: For IPv6 configure the IPv6 address, IPv6 prefix length, and IPv6 default gateway
similarly with the commands addr6, prefix6, and gw6 respectively.
vADC Console
The vADC console feature provides console access to individual vADCs from a centralized monitor,
and allows you to easily switch between the vADCs in the platform.
The vADC console is enabled by default for versions 31.0 fresh installation and higher, or for
upgrades from versions 31.X and higher.
When upgrading from earlier versions, the vADC console is disabled. In order to enable it run the
command /c/sys/vconsole on the VX console. (This requires applying, saving the configuration,
and rebooting the platform.)
Note: The vADC console communication is through the Alteon VX console port.
Only one console session (to the VX or one of the vADCs) should be connected simultaneously. If
more sessions are opened, the console display may corrupt.
Note: The recommended console screen resolution is 80 x 24. If your screen resolution is different,
or you changed the screen resolution settings after the console was opened, it takes up to 15
seconds until the console display adjusts to the new resolution settings. (This occurs even if you
drag the console window to another monitor with a different resolution.)
Use the following key combination to switch between the vADC consoles:
• CTRL+B, N - goes to the next vADC console window.
• CTRL+B, P - goes to previous vADC console window.
• CTRL+B, <terminal slot number> - goes to the specified vADC console window.
For slots large than 10, press CTRL+B, ' and, when prompted, enter the slot number.)
• CTRL+B, 0 - goes to the base VX console window.
Entering CTRL+B, W - presents a list of active vADCs and their console slot numbers.
Note: The slot numbers are determined according the order the vADCs were activated (enabled),
and not according to the vADC ID.
Note: If you want to change the function of the 6/MNG 1 port after configuring the Alteon, you need
to save the configuration, delete the configuration using q1, reboot the Alteon platform, and then
reconfigure the function of the of the 6/MNG 1 port using the startup configuration procedure.
Note: The management port (port 10) is enabled globally by default and does not require any
user operation. In standalone mode, the management port can be manually disabled if required
using the command /boot/mgmt disable
Before a Telnet session can be established, Alteon must have a management IP address. The
management port can only be assigned an IP address manually during the configuration process
through a console connection, as described above.
Note: SSH access can be enabled using the console port or Telnet. SSH access can be disabled only
using the serial console and not using Telnet. For vADC, SSH access can be disabled via Telnet.
Initial Screen
Each time a connection is established with the Alteon platform, the initial screen displays showing
general system and hardware information.
Alteon VA provides ADC virtualization with ADC-VX, the ADC virtualization and consolidation
platform based on a specialized ADC hypervisor. ADC-VX is built on an architecture that virtualizes
the resources of the Alteon ADC platform including CPU, memory, network and acceleration
resources. This specialized hypervisor runs fully functional virtual ADC instances, each of which
delivers ADC functionality just like a dedicated physical ADC device. Each virtual ADC instance
contains a complete and separate environment of resources, configurations, and management.
This chapter describes the installation and configuration instructions for the various VA platforms,
and includes the following sections:
• ADC Form Factors, page 71
• Alteon VA for VMware Installation and Configuration, page 73.
• Alteon VA for KVM Installation and Configuration, page 85.
• Alteon VA for Microsoft Hyper-V Installation and Configuration, page 92
• Initial Deployment of Alteon VA, page 99.
• Obtaining and Installing a Permanent License for Alteon VA, page 101.
Note: Before powering up your Alteon VA, ensure that you connect the network interfaces to
different networks.
Notes
• When running over VMware or KVM, if the Alteon VA VM is assigned with at least 3 GB RAM,
Alteon VA supports up to 17 virtual interfaces. The first interface is used for management access
and the rest are used for data.
If the Alteon VA VM is assigned with less than 3 GB RAM, the maximum number of virtual
interfaces supported is 3.
• When running over OpenXen or Microsoft HyperV, the maximum number of virtual interfaces
supported is 3.
Note: Before starting the upgrade process, you should free unnecessary disk space by cleaning the
log and dump files. Run the following commands prior to the upgrade to free disk space:
Supported Hardware
To run in a multi-SP environment, Alteon VA utilizes the DPDK library.
This is supported by Alteon VA on Intel processors with Sandy Bridge or a later architecture.
The following NICs are supported for PCI pass-through mode:
• Intel Niantic 10G NIC x520 using the 82599 Ethernet controller chip set
• Mellanox ConnectX-3 Pro 125 Gbps NIC (under KVM only)
The following NICs are supported for SR-IOV mode:
• Intel Niantic 10G NIC x520 using the 82599 Ethernet controller chip set
The Alteon VA in PCI pass-through mode was tested on the following servers:
• HP DL380 Gen 9
• Cisco UCS C240-M3
• Dell R720
Note: Alteon VA over VMware supports ESX versions: 5.0, 5.1, 5.5. To configure Alteon VA to run
with multiple SPs, the VMware ESX version must be 5.0 or higher.
To configure Alteon VA on VMware to work with multiple SPs, it should use the vmxnet3 virtual
network adapter.
Installation Prerequisites
• Fully functioning VMware infrastructure, including:
— A VMware ESX server (versions: 5.0, 5.1, 5.5)
— An installed vSphere client
• OVF/OVA package from Radware
Notes
• The Open Virtualization Format (OVF) is an open standard for packaging and distributing
virtual appliances or more generally software to be run on virtual machines. The OVF standard is
not tied to any particular hypervisor or processor architecture. The unit of packaging and
distribution is called an OVF Package, which may contain one or more virtual systems each of
which can be deployed to a virtual machine. An OVF package consists of several files placed in
one directory.
• The Open Virtualization Appliance (OVA) is a one-file alternative package, a TAR file with
the OVF directory inside. So if you want to share your VM on the Internet, you can create a
single OVA file (similar to a zip file). To use the file, you have to convert it first to OVF (just like
you unzip a file before you use it).
2. Deploy the OVF package by selecting File > Deploy OVF Template. The Deployment OVF
Template wizard displays.
3. In the Deploy OVF Template dialog box, select Deploy from file, click Browse to select the
OVF template from the relevant location, and click Next.
4. In the End User Agreement dialog box, click Accept to accept the end-user licensing agreement.
Click Next.
5. In the Name and Location dialog box, provide a name and location for the deployed template.
The name can contain up to 80 characters and must be unique within the inventory folder, and
click Next.
6. In the Host/Cluster dialog box, select a host or cluster that will run the deployed template, and
click Next.
A cluster is a logical group of devices for high availability or load balancing purposes. If you
select a cluster, you must select a specific host. Each virtual machine must be assigned to a
specific host. You must select a storage location for the virtual machine files.
a. In the Specify a Specific Host dialog box, select an available host from the list, and click
Next.
b. In the Datastore dialog box, select the storage for the virtual machine files, and click Next.
7. Finish the Alteon VA installation.
8. Click Next to view the options you selected, and then click Finish.
9. From the Home > Inventory drop-down menu, select Templates and VMs.
10. In the VM Inventory tree, right-click the desired Alteon VA from the list, and then select Edit
Settings.
Note: If no virtual machines are displayed, verify that Show VMs in Inventory is selected in
the Vsphere client View menu option.
11. Assign each network adapter to the predefined network connections for management, clients,
and servers.
12. To configure Alteon VA to run in PCI pass-through mode (Alteon VA for NFV), see Configuring
Alteon VA for Pass-through, page 80.
13. If you are configuring for a multi-core environment, see Configuring Alteon VA on VMware to
Support Enhanced Alteon VA Functionality, page 76.
Note: To deploy Alteon VA in bridge mode, you must set the vSwitch as promiscuous.
Note: By default, the Alteon VA is deployed with the minimum Alteon requirements: 1 vCPU, 2 GB
RAM (2.4 GB under VMware), and 6 GB disk space
VM Configuration
After successfully deploying the OVA, you have to resize the VM by setting the vCPUs, disk, and RAM
size.
To configure the VM
1. Access the vSphere client.
2. Right-click on the VM and select Edit Settings.
3. Set the number of vCPUs and the RAM size of the VM. See Before starting the upgrade process,
you should free unnecessary disk space by cleaning the log and dump files. Run the following
commands prior to the upgrade to free disk space:, page 72 to determine the VM sizes required.
4. Click Add.
8. Click Finish.
9. Click OK and restart the virtual machine.
Note: After assigning an additional vDisk, the system performs an automatic reboot when turning
on the VM for the first time.
Resource Allocation
By default, the system allocates all its resources for Alteon only.
• If you intend to run FastView or AppWall on Alteon, you need to allocate the VM resources
between Alteon and AppWall or FastView.
• If you do not intend to run FastView or AppWall, then no other configuration is required.
Note: These limitations are not relevant when configuring the network interfaces to work in
pass-through mode.
Note: For more information how to configure Alteon resources, refer to the Alteon Command
Reference and the Alteon WBM Application Guide.
3. Set the RAM size for Alteon as 2 GB multiplied by the number of Alteon vCPUs. For example, if 5
vCPUs are assigned to Alteon, the minimum RAM size must be 10 GB.
— For extended network performance by using DPDK, allocate at least 3 GB RAM.
— When configuring Alteon VA to run with multiple SPs, allocate at least 2 GB RAM per vCPU.
Note: To configure the Alteon VA to run in a PCI pass-through mode on HP servers, you must run
ESXi version 6.0.
To enable the VM to work in pass-through mode, designate the host machine PCI NICs that you
intend to use in pass-through mode.
1. Open the vSphere client and select the node of the host machine.
4. Select the Intel NIC you want to use and click OK.
5. Click Finish.
Note: When configuring Alteon VA in a KVM environment, to work in pass-through mode (Alteon VA
for NFV), you should first validate the physical ports of the host server (PCI addresses) with the VM
running the Alteon VA. For more information, refer to Appendix B - Configuring Alteon VA in PCI
Pass-through Mode, page 139.
Supported Hosts
• Ubuntu 14.04, 12.04
Installation Prerequisites
• The KVM host has the following packages and tools installed:
— Qemu 2.0
— libvirt version v0.9.10 and higher. For bypass mode (Alteon VA for NFV), version 1.2.5 or
higher is recommended.
— losetup
Minimum Requirements
• For single SP (1-2 vCPUs)
— KVM host kernel–minimum version: 2.6.32-279.5.2.el6.x86_64
— libvirt v0.9.10
• For multiple SPs (more than 3 vCPUs)
— KVM host kernel–recommended version: 3.13
— libvirt v1.0.5
Note: When Alteon VA for KVM is installed through a libvirt/virsh deployment, a virtual serial line or
virsh console to the serial line is used instead of the usual TTY. Therefore, you should switch to a
serial console if you are using a GUI-based framework. If you attempt to use a standard TTY, the line
is dropped and the prompt may freeze.
3. Click OK.
4. Select Libvirt (KVM).
5. Click OK.
6. Select the deployment mode (location) for the new image as 1 local, and click OK.
8. At the prompt, type the virtual machine name, and click OK. A default name is provided.
9. Navigate to the desired management port using the keyboard arrows and press Enter to select
the management port.
10. Navigate to the Next button and click it.
11. Select the network interface type for the data/traffic network ports:
— virtio—For network connection through the vSwitch.
— pass-through—For connecting the virtual machine directly to the network interface cards.
Note: If the NICs are configured on the host for PCI pass-through, the selected NICs cannot be
shared among other virtual machines.
12. If you selected virtio, select the bridge interfaces. If you selected pass-through, select the
relevant PCI NIC interfaces. Use the arrow buttons to scroll up or down and press Enter to
select the interface.
Notes
• The PCI interfaces you select are configured in the Virtual Machine configuration in the
order that you selected them. Radware recommends that you first select the client-side
interfaces, click OK, and then select the server-side interface.
• In PCI pass-through mode, select the ports according to the correct PCI port address.
The PCI addresses are those you validated in the process described in Appendix B -
Configuring Alteon VA in PCI Pass-through Mode, page 139.
• For Mellanox NICs, the PCI address is provided per NIC and not per port.
16. Enter the Virtual Machine disk size, and click OK.
Allocate the VM vCPUs between the applications running on the Alteon VA:
— Alteon—ADC functionality. If one vCPU is allocated, both MP and SP run on the same vCPU.
If more than one vCPU is allocated, one vCPU is assigned for MP processing while the rest
are assigned for SP processing. When running under virtio, up to 8 vCPUs can be allocated
for SP processing. In PCI pass-through mode, up to 36 SPs can be allocated for SPs. The
Alteon vCPUs should include the vCPUs for MP, SP and TD.
— FastView — Web Performance Optimization. To enable FastView, you must assign two (2)
vCPUs for it.
— AppWall — WAF and authentication server. To enable AppWall, you must assign two (2),
four (4), or eight (8) vCPUs for it.
18. When the installation completed successfully message displays, click OK.
19. To view a list of the installed devices, enter virsh list --all.
20. To run the Alteon VA Virtual Machine, enter virsh start [name].
21. To access the Alteon VA console enter virsh console {name} where name is the name given
to the Alteon VA virtual machine (for example, AlteonOS-30.2.0.0_rls_524 in the above
example).
Notes
• If your network has a DHCP server, the Alteon VA IP address displays. If not, configure this
manually. For more information, see the Alteon Command Reference Guide.
• The Alteon VA installation on KVM requires that the vhost-net driver is installed. If the KVM host
does not have this driver configured, you can do this by entering the following command:
/etc/default/qemu-kvm: VHOST_NET_ENABLED=0 to VHOST_NET_ENABLED=1.
To optimize the VM performance, Radware recommends configuring the VM memory between the
host NUMAs, as follows:
<numatune>
<memory mode='interleave' nodeset='0-n'/>
</numatune>
<vcpu placement='static'>4</vcpu>
<cputune>
<vcpupin vcpu='0' cpuset='10'/>
<vcpupin vcpu='1' cpuset='30'/>
<vcpupin vcpu='2' cpuset='11'/>
<vcpupin vcpu='3' cpuset='31'/>
</cputune>
sshfs Installation
When installing Alteon VA for NFV on a remote machine, the sshfs utility must be installed on the
host server. It uses FUSE kernel facilities and SSH tunneling for working with a remote virtual disk.
The following are guidelines for sshfs installation on Ubuntu or RHEL/CentOS systems:
• To install the sshfs package on an Ubuntu host, enter the following command:
sudo apt-get install sshfs -y
• To install the sshfs package on a RHEL 5.x/CentOS 5.x host, enter the following commands:
sudo rpm -Uvh http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/x86_64/epel-
release-5-4.noarch.rpm
sudo yum -y install fuse sshfs
• To install the sshfs package on a RHEL 6.x/CentOS 6.x 64bit host, enter the following
commands:
sudo rpm -Uvh http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/x86_64/epel-
release-6-8.noarch.rpm
sudo yum -y install fuse sshfs
Installation Prerequisites
Fully functioning infrastructure, including:
• Microsoft Hyper-V Server
• Hyper-V Server GUI
• Alteon VA package (zip file) from Radware
5. Click Next.
6. Enter a name for the virtual machine and click Next. You can keep the default location provided.
8. Select a network connection from the drop-down list and click Next.
15. Select Add Hardware and select Network Adapter from the drop-down list.
16. Click Add.
17. Select a second separate virtual switch (for example, clients) and click Apply.
18. Select Add Hardware > Network Adapter and select a third separate virtual switch and click
Apply.
19. For the Network Adapter-management, select Advanced Features.
20. Set the MAC Address policy to Static and enter the MAC address.
21. For each network interface as required, set the MAC Address policy to Static and enter the MAC
address.
22. You can now run the Alteon VA Virtual Machine.
Note: Accessing Alteon VA via the console using a Japanese language keyboard layout may not
work properly. In such a case, you can access using SSH or Telnet.
Note: To exit the console, release the cursor and click CTRL+ALT.
Note: Radware offers a 30-day free trial version of Alteon VA, including all the features and
capabilities of the licensed version. You can download the trial version at:
https://www.radware.com/Resources/SoftwareDownloads. By the end of the evaluation period, you
have to purchase Alteon VA and install a permanent license to continue using it.
Note: When deploying a VM from a snapshot, the MAC address of the virtual machine changes and
the license becomes invalid. For the VA to operate properly, you must either get a new VA license
with the new MAC address or manually set the old MAC address on the new VM.
Note: Alteon VA upgrades from versions earlier than 29.5 are not supported due to kernel changes.
The upgrade password is based on the base MAC address (of the first interface) of your platform and
on the version software file size.
An upgrade to a minor version (for example, from 30.5.0.0 to 30.5.3.0) does not require a
password.
Notes
• Radware recommends saving the existing configuration before upgrading.
• Disable session mirroring before upgrading.
• Perform any required configuration changes before upgrading.
Note: This full configuration backup will be needed in case of a future downgrade.
Note: For more information on the upgrade command and options, see the Alteon Command
Reference.
Note: Alternatively, you can disable the data ports on the platform that they are connected to.
Notes
• Due to changes in the configuration file structure to support new features and update current
ones, after the upgrade it is possible that the diff or diff flash will not be empty. To fix this, you
must Apply and Save the entire configuration file. If no change was performed to the
configuration (that is, the diff is empty), perform any change in the configuration and perform
the Apply and Save (for example, run the command /cfg/sys/idle X/apply/save).
• When you install a new software image on hardware platforms, the currently loaded BIOS is
updated if it does not match the new BIOS. If you are instructed by Radware Technical Support
to do so, you can force the BIOS installation even if the version remains unchanged, using the
following syntax: /boot/image image1|image2 -f
Downgrading (Rollback)
Notes
• Before performing upgrade, back up your current configuration. In case of version rollback, after
the downgrade boot Alteon from the factory configuration and manually upload the saved
configuration.
• Validation is performed on saved configurations. Upon downgrade, parameters that were
changed and/or added since the previous version may not be supported and you may
experience unapplied configuration parameters.
• When downgrading to a version earlier than 28.1.5.0, the configuration is restored to the factory
default, preserving the IPv4 management interface access. Therefore, Radware recommends
saving the configuration and reload it after the rollback.
• When downgrading, the admin password returns to the default “admin.” If the Admin password
was changed, it will need to be re-configured after the downgrade.
• Due to changes in the configuration file structure to support new features or change of existing
ones, after the downgrade it is possible that the diff or diff flash will not be empty. To fix this,
you must Apply and Save the entire configuration file. If no change was performed to the
configuration (that is, the diff is empty), perform any change in the configuration and perform
the Apply and Save (for example perform the command /cfg/sys/idle X/apply/save).
Licensing Mechanism
The licensing mechanism is designed to provide an easy path for adding product capabilities and
scaling up capacity after the initial product purchase, without service interruption. There is no need
for Alteon platform replacement or even reboot.
A license is based on the MAC address of the Alteon platform and is a one-time license; after a
license is changed, the old license key cannot be reused.
There are two types of licenses: capabilities license and capacity licenses.
Capabilities License
This license is available on all platforms and allows customers to add product-specific capabilities.
This license is accumulative; it can enable multiple license-based capabilities (features). When you
purchase subsequent features, the permanent license string is modified to include the new
supported features.
The licensed capabilities include:
• slb—Basic Load Balancing (always present, provided by default)
• cookie—Cookie Persistency
• global—Global Server Load Balancing
• llb—Inbound Link Load Balancing
• bwm—Bandwidth Management
• ados—Advanced Denial of Service (ADoS) Protection
• itm—Bandwidth Management plus Security
The capabilities license string that you get from Technical Support has the following syntax:
aas-slb-[<feature1>-<feature2>-<featureN>-password
where
• feature1 through featureN are strings separately representing licensed features.
• password is a generated string based on the Base MAC address of the platform.
Capacity Licenses
These licenses define the capacity levels enabled on the Alteon platform and allow for smooth on-
demand capacity scalability, by installing new software keys on the Alteon platform.
Capacity levels are monitored and alerts can be sent to the console, Telnet, and SSH interfaces and
syslog servers when a configured threshold is passed or a capacity level is reached, thus advising
when capacity increase is required. For more information, see the /cfg/sys/alerts menu in the
Alteon Command Reference.
The capacity license string that you get from Radware Technical Support has the following syntax:
<capacity type>-<capacity level>-password
where
• capacity type is the capacity type enabled by the license.
• capacity level is the capacity level enabled by the license.
• password is a generated string based on the Base MAC address of the platform.
Notes
— The FastView license includes a compression license matching the FastView license capacity.
— The capacity of the FastView license must be equal to or greater than the capacity of the
Alteon throughput license. Upgrade the FastView capacity license before you upgrade the
Alteon throughput license.
• APM License — This license defines the Application Performance Monitoring capacity level and
enables capacity upgrade (sampled pages per minute).
License string: aas-apm-<Pages per Minute level>-password
Time-Based License
A time-based license includes a start date and an end date. The license takes effect only within the
time frame of the license, from 00:00 on the start date until 23:59 on the end date.
A license can have a future start date in the following cases:
• There is no previous active license for that capability.
• There is a previous active license that expires at a maximum of one day before the new license
starts (new-license-start-date is equal to or earlier than old-license-end-date+1).
Expiration warnings (console, syslog, SNMP traps) are issued 30 days, 15 days, 10 days, 5 days, 4
days, 3 days, 2 days, and 1 day before the license expires and each day after expiration.
A grace period is given after the expiration date. When the grace period passes, the capability is
deactivated and an error is issued. The license will display as Expired.
If you have a time-based throughput license, when the license expires the throughput is reset to
default.
Time-based licenses are implemented for:
• APM
License string— aas-apm-<apm level>-<start date>-<end date>
When the APM license expires, the APM script injection performed by the Proxy stops and APM-
related script is not performed.
• FastView
License string:
(version 30.0) aas-fv-<fv level>-<start date>-<end date>
(version 30.1) aas-fastview-<start date>-<end date>
and aas-fastview+-<start date>-<end date>
When the FastView license expires, the Alteon Proxy stops accelerating traffic.

Note: The following procedure is currently supported only using Microsoft Windows.
Note: The USB port is defined as the first in the boot sequence. Therefore, when you insert a
USB mass storage device into the Alteon platform, the recovery process starts automatically at
the subsequent reboot.
Note: The trailing colon (:) is required (for example, mkusb.bat k:).
6. The batch file, mkusb.bat, formats the USB mass storage device and copies the required files
into it. Follow any instructions displayed on the console and confirm any steps of the batch job
by pressing Enter. A message displays when the USB device is ready.
7. Unplug the USB device from your host computer.
8. Insert the USB into the Alteon platform.
9. Turn on the Alteon platform. It boots from the USB.
10. Follow the instructions displayed on the console.
Note: The procedure may involve several automatic reboots. This is normal.
11. When successful, the application installation process runs automatically and displays progress
information on the console.
12. When the primary installation is completed, remove the USB from the Alteon platform. It
prompts for this confirmation.
13. Press Enter to confirm the USB has been removed from the Alteon platform.
14. When prompted, enter the license that you received from Technical Support.
16. Reconfigure the management port (see Initial Configuration, page 62).
17. Restore the previous configuration. For more information, refer to the Alteon Application Switch
Operating System Command Reference.
Note: Before deciding to replace a power supply module, ensure that the problem is not with the
power source or power cable or connection.
Some Alteon platforms are available with only one power supply, and some platforms have,
optionally, two load-sharing power supplies:
• If the platform has only one power supply and it fails, the system shuts down and a new power
supply must be installed and the power reconnected.
• If the platform has dual power supplies, if one power supply fails it can be replaced (hot-
swapped) without shutting down the system.
This procedure is similar for both AC and a DC power supply modules (where applicable).
Caution:
Caution: For a platform with dual power supplies, do not disconnect the power cable from the
working power supply, or the system will shut down.
2. Remove the screw of the power supply module that secure it to the chassis, lift the handle and
pull the module from the chassis.
For Alteon 4408/5208 platforms: Push the lever towards the handle and then use the handle to
pull the module from the chassis.
Dispose of the old power supply module properly.
3. Fully insert the new power supply into the chassis and replace and tighten the screw holding it in
place.
For Alteon 4408/5208 platforms: Fully insert the new power supply into the chassis until it clicks
into place.
4. Reconnect the power cables to the new power supply.
5. Verify that the green LED indicator on the power supply lights up and that the power supply’s fan
is working.
Note: You cannot replace the compact flash on the Alteon 4408.
Each fan module is attached to the back panel with two thumb screws.
If a fan fails, Alteon displays a LOG_CRIT alarm message, sends a syslog message, and lights the
red front panel FAN LED.
The fan modules are hot-swappable and field-replaceable. You do not need to power off the platform
to replace the fan module.
Caution:
• Radware recommends that only experienced personnel install or remove hardware components.
Installing or removing components incorrectly can permanently damage the platform.
• To protect the platform and its modules from electrostatic discharge damage, make sure that
you are properly grounded before you touch these components. Radware recommends that you
use the grounding wrist strap that is included in the upgrade kit. The grounding screw on the
rear of the platform provides a chassis grounding point.

parties (the "Third Party Software"). Third Party Software shall be deemed part of the Software
for all intents and purposes of this License Agreement; provided, however, that in the event that
a Third Party Software is a software for which the source code is made available under an open
source software license agreement, then, to the extent there is any discrepancy or inconsistency
between the terms of this License Agreement and the terms of any such open source license
agreement (including, for example, license rights in the open source license agreement that are
broader than the license rights set forth in Section 1 above and/or no limitation in the open
source license agreement on the actions set forth in Section 6 above), the terms of any such
open source license agreement will govern and prevail. The terms of open source license
agreements and copyright notices under which Third Party Software is being licensed to
Radware or a link thereto, are included with the Software documentation or in the header or

Agreement are not transferable and will terminate upon: (i) termination of this License
Agreement, or (ii) transfer of the Software, or (iii) in the event the Software is provided as an
embedded or bundled component of another Radware Product, when the Software is un-bundled
from such Product or otherwise used other than as part of such Product. If the Software is
licensed on subscription basis, this Agreement will automatically terminate upon the termination
of your subscription period if it is not extended.
12. Export. The Software or any part thereof may be subject to export or import controls under
applicable export/import control laws and regulations including such laws and regulations of the
United States and/or Israel. You agree to comply with such laws and regulations, and, agree not

License Agreement is unreasonable, illegal or otherwise unenforceable, such provision or
provisions shall be rendered void or invalid only to the extent that such judicial determination
finds such provisions to be unreasonable, illegal or otherwise unenforceable, and the remainder
of this License Agreement shall remain operative and in full force and effect. In any event a
party breaches or threatens to commit a breach of this License Agreement, the other party will,
in addition to any other remedies available to, be entitled to injunction relief. This License
Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties hereto and supersedes all prior
agreements between the parties hereto with respect to the subject matter hereof. The failure of
any party hereto to require the performance of any provisions of this License Agreement shall in
no manner affect the right to enforce the same. No waiver by any party hereto of any provisions
or of any breach of any provisions of this License Agreement shall be deemed or construed
either as a further or continuing waiver of any such provisions or breach waiver or as a waiver of
any other provision or breach of any other provision of this License Agreement.
