NEBS Requirements

NEBS (Network Equipment-Building System) describes the environment of a typical United States
Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) central office (CO). NEBS is the most common set of
safety, spatial and environmental design guidelines applied to telecommunications equipment in the
United States. It is an industry requirement, but not a legal requirement. Telcordia now manages
the NEBS specifications.
NEBS Level 3 is a term from Bellcore special report SR-3580, and means the equipment meets all
of the requirements of GR-63-CORE and GR-1089-CORE. NEBS Level 3 has strict specifications for
fire suppression, thermal margin testing, vibration resistance (earthquakes), air flow patterns,
acoustic limits, failover and partial operational requirements (such as chassis fan failures), failure
severity levels, RF emissions and tolerances, and testing/certification requirements.
Alteon NEBS-certified platforms meet the NEBS Level 3 design guidelines requirements,
The following Alteon platform(s) are NEBS certified: 4416 6420

Installing the Platform

2. Attach the platform to the rack with the mounting screws.

3. Connect at least one ground wire from the platform chassis to the rack. Typically, the platform
has one or two ground screws on the back panel near the screws that secure the power supply.

Note: After you mount the platform, ensure that there is adequate air flow surrounding it.

Warning: Reliable grounding of the rack and all rack-mounted equipment should be maintained.
Particular attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the
branch circuit (for example, use of power strips).

Warning: The DC mains, supplied from the building installation, must be insulated from the AC
mains with a double or reinforced insulation. It also must be entirely connected to protective earth
within the building.

Warning: For the DC mains, the positive pole must be connected to the ground through the
building installation.

Warning: Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of air flow
required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.

Warning: Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous condition is not
achieved due to uneven mechanical loading.

Warning: Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit
and the effect that overloading of the circuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply
wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing
this concern.

Caution: If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of
the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given
to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature
specified in Appendix A - Specifications, for the specific platform.

Notes
• The areas between the rack mounting brackets and the chassis must be cleaned and antioxidant
must be applied before bonding together.
• This all applies to the front mounting ears, rear mounting ears and the middle mounting ears
that are used with platform rack mounting.
• The front and rear brackets are mandatory and the mid brackets are optional.
• 19” rack mount brackets or 23” rack mount brackets can be provided per customer demand.

NEBS Requirements

This section describes the NEBS requirements for installation of the NEBS-certified Alteon platform
and rack in which the platform is mounted.
There are three NEBS levels:
• NEBS Level 1 means a very low threshold of equipment hazards and network degradation.
NEBS Level 1 addresses the personnel and equipment safety requirements of GR-63-CORE and
GR-1089-CORE. Operability requirements are not enforced for NEBS Level 1 certification. It is
primarily used for getting prototypes into lab trials. RBOCs require all equipment deployed by
CLECs to be NEBS Level 1 certified.
• NEBS Level 2 addresses equipment operability in a controlled environment (usually data
centers) that will not be subjected to environmental stress. Because of ambiguity, this level of
certification is rarely (if ever) used.
• NEBS Level 3 is a term from a Bellcore special report, SR-3580, and means the equipment
meets all of the requirements of GR-63-CORE and GR-1089-CORE. NEBS Level 3 has strict
specifications for fire suppression, thermal margin testing, vibration resistance (earthquakes),
air flow patterns, acoustic limits, failover and partial operational requirements (such as chassis
fan failures), failure severity levels, RF emissions and tolerances, and testing/certification
requirements.

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Installing the Platform

Rack and Platform

The rack in which an Alteon platform is mounted must be in a Network Telecommunication Facility
only. The NEBS-certified Alteon platform and rack in which the platform is mounted must be
installed in a restricted access location.
The NEBS-certified Alteon platform and rack in which the platform is mounted must be grounded to
a Common Bonding Network.

Warning: The intrabuilding ports of the equipment or subassembly is suitable for connection to
intrabuilding or unexposed wiring or cabling only. The intra-building ports of the equipment or
subassembly MUST NOT be metallically connected to interfaces that connect to the OSP or its wiring.
These interfaces are designed for use as intra-building interfaces only (Type 2 or Type 4 ports as
described in GR-1089-CORE, Issue 6) and require isolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The
addition of Primary Protectors is not sufficient protection to connect these interfaces metallically to
OSP wiring.

Grounding Prerequisites
• This unit can be configured to DC-I only
• Only copper cables, 6 AWG or larger, must be used for grounding purposes.
• When mounting a Alteon platform with a DC power supply, battery return terminals must be in
the configuration of an Isolated DC Return (DC-I).
• The Alteon platform must be connected to the grounding wire by means of the grounding screw
using a listed two-hole copper compression lug (Panduit LCD6-10A-L).
• Bare conductors must be coated with antioxidant before making crimp connections.
• The primary ground screws are M6 and should be installed with a torque of 4.30Nm, +/-
0.43Nm.
• A star washer (tooth washer) must be used next to opposite sides of the grounding lug or
terminal (see Figure 20 - Proper Grounding, page 56). This provides the proper locking
mechanism. The internal tooth washer removes paint from the chassis to establish a metal-to-
metal contact to the unplated surface.
The following diagram shows the proper grounding connection to an Alteon platform.

Site and Installation Planning

When planning basic site and installation requirements you need to consider the following issues:

56 Document ID: RDWR-ALOS-V3029_IG1712

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Installing the Platform

• Adequate power should be available.

• The platform should be positioned in a way that the power source is easy to reach.
• There should be sufficient space in racks to install the platform.
• Suitable equipment should be available to lift the platform into the rack.
• There should be an unrestricted area for inlet and outlet of the fans and therefore the air flow is
not blocked.
• For installation in a restricted access location.
• For use by trained personnel only.

Environmental Requirements
To ensure proper function of the platform, ensure that the environment in which it is to be used
fulfills the environmental requirements.
The environmental values must be tested and proven in the planned platform configuration, that is,
the delivered platform and other third-party products you want to integrate.

Notes:
• Operating temperatures refer to the temperature of the air circulating at the air intake of the
platform and not to component temperatures.
• Some of the climatic values may exceed the specification of some components (for example,
hard disks). Radware cannot guarantee the functionality of third party products that are handled
or operated out of their specifications, the environmental conditions may be limited to the
specifications of these components.
See Appendix A - Specifications, page 119 for the environmental requirements.

Power Requirements
For DC, ensure that a suitable -48.0 VDC to -60 VDC rated power source is within reach of the
system.

Warning: The DC system is supplied by a TNV-2 voltage. This voltage is considered hazardous.
Ensure that the external power supply meets the relevant safety standards. Ensure that TNV-2 is
separated from dangerous voltages (mains) through double or reinforced insulation.

Rack/Cabinet Cooling Guidelines

It is important to have sufficient open space at the front and rear of the platform when installed in a
rack or cabinet. Depending on whether the enclosure has solid or vented doors will determine the
recommended open space required. Follow these guidelines for positioning the platform to allow for
the optimal open space for air inlet and exhaust.

Caution: Do not obstruct the ventilation openings at the top, sides and back of the platform.

Mounting Options and Stabilization

The Alteon platform is designed to be mounted in an equipment rack while maintaining conformance
to the NEBS 24" deep lineup and the ETSI 600mm deep lineup standards for telecommunication
equipment. For increased stability, Radware recommends that the rack is securely mounted to the
floor, or if using stabilizing devices make sure they are installed and extended.

Document ID: RDWR-ALOS-V3029_IG1712 57

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Installing the Platform

Weight Distribution Within a Rack

Warning: To avoid personal injury or damage to the equipment, plan your installation so that
(within the limitations of equipment and cabling):
• The weight of the equipment is evenly distributed in the rack.
• The heaviest units are mounted nearer the bottom of the rack.
Uneven mechanical loading of the rack may cause toppling.

Caution: Unstable platform installation in a rack can cause the rack to topple over. Therefore, if
your platform is the only one in the rack, make sure to mount it in the lowest part of the rack. If
other platforms are installed in one rack, start with the heaviest component at the bottom. If the
rack is equipped with stabilizing devices, make sure that they are installed and extended so that the
rack is secure. Then proceed to mount or service the platform. Do not tilt the platform forward or
backward when removing it from the package as components at the bottom could be damaged.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and Safety Procedures

Radware strongly recommends that you use an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad
when installing or upgrading a platform. Electronic components can be extremely sensitive to
electrostatic discharge (ESD). After removing the component from its protective wrapper or from
the platform, place the component flat on a grounded, static-free surface. Do not slide the
component over any surface If an ESD station is not available, you can avoid damage resulting from
ESD by wearing an anti-static wrist strap (available at electronics stores) that is attached to an
active electrical ground. Note that a platform may not be grounded if it is unplugged.

Notes
• There is one earth ground located at the back of the platform.
• There are three ESD bonding points, two on the front and one on the back of the platform.

Installing the NEBS Platform

The Alteon platform can be mounted in a 23" EIA or 600mm ETSI frame using front mounting
brackets. Using rear mounting brackets is recommended for all frame types when installed in a
Central Office Environment. Front or rear mounting brackets are not shipped with this product. For
assistance with the acquisition or design of mounting brackets for your particular application,
contact your Radware representative.

Warning: Do not mount a single platform at the top of the rack. A top-heavy rack can tip, causing
damage to equipment and injury to personnel.

Warning: Do not use the power module handles for lifting the platform. Ensure that you have the
appropriate equipment to safely lift and mount the platform securely. To avoid personal injury or
damage to the equipment, use two persons for the installation procedure.

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Installing the Platform

23" EIA Rack/Cabinet Installation

Front mounting brackets are required to attach the platform to an EIA 23" frame.
1. Locate the standard mounting hole and slot locations on the front mounting flanges on the
platform.
2. Fasten the mounting brackets to the back side of the front chassis flanges using M6 screws x
12mm at each of the four locations.
3. Be sure to mount the platform with metal screws or bolts that give a good electrical connection
between the screws or bolts and the mounting surface.
4. Tighten all screws using a torque setting of 35.5 to 38.5 inch-pounds.

Caution: Failure to observe proper grounding practices may cause a variety of noise, electrostatic
discharge, and RFI problems.

600mm ETSI Rack/Cabinet Installation

The platform mounts directly from the integrated flange on the front of the platform.
1. Locate the standard mounting hole and slot locations on the front integrated mounting flanges
on the platform.

Grounding the Platform

Use a 6 AWG wire with a 2-hole copper lug and connect directly to the earth ground point located on
the back of the platform; connect the other end of the wire to a reliable earth ground. Use the
torque setting required by the connector supplier. The 2-hole lug prevents rotation of the lug and
ensures a permanent bonding of ground to the platform.

Note: The primary ground screws are M6 and should be installed with a torque of 4.30Nm, +/-
0.43Nm.

Warning: Reliable grounding of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained. The rack must be
properly grounded. Connect at least one ground wire from the platform chassis to the rack.
Typically, the platform has one or two special ground screws on the back panel near the screws that
secure the power supply.

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Installing the Platform

DC Power Cable
Power is introduced to the platform at the DC inlet located in the rear of the platform. The
recommended power cable is a 6 AWG gauge that meets the specifications for this platform. There
are two lugs for each DC feed.

Caution: Always check with your local building authorities for wire sizing requirements for your
environment. The installation must comply with the 1993 National Electric Code (NEC) and other
applicable codes. The DC power inputs must only be attached to approved Telephone Network
Voltage (TNV) or SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) branch circuits. Branch circuits must comply with
all requirements called for in these safety standards: IEC 60950, EN 60950, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No.
60950. Attaching inputs to non-TNV/SELV approved power sources will cause the system to fail
compliance with safety regulations. The ground wire must be connected to a reliable earth ground
connection to comply with Class 1 Equipment requirements.

Warning: Multiple power sources are present. Service only by qualified service personnel.

Table 17: DC Power Cable

Wire Signal
Earth Ground PE GND (Primary Earth Ground)
Input Power -48VDC/-60VDC
Return -48VDC/-60VDC RETURN

DC Power Cable Termination

Use lugs that accommodate large gauge wires for up to 60 Amps DC (6 AWG) when connecting to
the power module. To minimize shorting of the terminals, the lugs must be insulated according to
the following.

Note: Heat shrink should be placed as close to the hole as possible (0.15") apart.

Connecting the DC Cables

In a redundant configuration, each power module must be connected to a separate DC power
source. Power is introduced to each power module through the terminal blocks on the rear of the
chassis (power input cable and return cable). The lugs provide secure contact for the cable and
prevent the power cables from rotating. A plastic housing covers the power feeds and returns.

Caution: To cable a DC system, read all cautions and warnings, properly ground the equipment by
following the grounding procedures, and follow these steps. This procedure assumes that the power
modules are pre-installed in the platform.

2. Locate the target power input cable’s terminals at the branch circuit or power distribution unit.
Open the external circuit breakers that provide DC feed power to the chassis.
3. Lock and tag out the circuit breakers on the branch circuit or power distribution unit.

Warning: Cables may or may not be pre-installed at the branch circuit or power distribution unit. If
the DC power cables are not connected to the branch circuit or power distribution unit, connect the
power cables to the chassis before connecting the DC power cables to the external power source. If
the DC power cables are connected to the branch circuit or power distribution unit, a qualified
service person must confirm that the power to the cables is terminated (off) before continuing the
steps to attach the cables to the power modules. In either case, use a multimeter to check the
power module end of the terminals to confirm there is no power present.
4. Using the appropriate tool, carefully remove the plastic covering over the terminal blocks.
5. Confirm that there is no power to the chassis lug bolts. Using a multimeter, measure between
the two lugs and then measure between the chassis ground and each lug. If the DC potential is
3.0VDC or less, then power is not present.
6. Attach the DC power cables (input and return) to the dual lug bolts on each chassis power feed.
7. Using a torque wrench, tighten the nuts with a recommended torque setting of 35.5 to 38.5
inch-pounds. Make sure all DC leads are fastened securely.
8. Replace the plastic cover over the terminal blocks.
9. Verify that the power module circuit breakers are in the ON position.
10. Break the tag out or lockout seals on the branch circuit or power distribution unit.
11. Apply power by closing the branch circuit or power distribution unit. The OOS indicator LED will
glow solid red and the other LEDs will go dark. The OOS will not go dark and the IS indicator LED
will not illuminate until the external power circuit breakers are closed.
12. Verify that all FRU LEDs illuminate and the IS LED of the power module is green, and the OOS
LED is dark.

DC System Power-up and Power-down Procedure

Depending on the platform configuration, the actual powering up may take up to 3 minutes.
Make sure that the platform has been placed in a location at room temperature for at least 24 hours
before powering it up.

To startup a DC system
1. Put on an ESD wrist strap.
2. Connect the strap to the platform by attaching the front or rear ESD jack/ESD snap.
3. Mount the grounding cable to the Protective Earth connection lug if not done already.
4. Set the breakers on the power module faceplates to the OFF (tripped) position if they are not
already in this position.

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Installing the Platform

5. Make sure that the external power feeds you plan to attach are powered off and cannot be
switched on while you are working.
6. Attach the power cables with 2 hole lugs to the DC power inlet in the rear of the platform.
7. Energize the power feeds at the external device.
8. Push the power module breakers to the ON position.
9. Verify that all LEDs illuminate and the In Service LED of the power module is green. The system
executes its normal start-up routine and is then ready to use.

Note: Ensure that the DC and DC return are connected correctly. Applying reversed power causes
damage to the electrolytic capacitors of the filter

Warning: Cover all open module slots and put all approved filler panels in place before turning on
power. This is necessary to properly cool the chassis and to avoid electrical shock and other possible
hazards. Slot covers and panels must remain in place during platform operation.

Note: If the power is disconnected and reconnected (for example, after the power cord is removed
and replaced, or after a power failure), the platform returns to its previous state. For example, if the
platform was running, and then you disconnect the power cord, when you reconnect the power cord,
the platform automatically switches on.

DC System Power-Down Procedure

To power down the DC system

1. Power down the platform using system management software.
2. Toggle both power module breakers to the OFF position.
3. Verify that the LEDs of the power modules are off.

Initial Configuration
After installed, the platform requires some administrative configuration before it can be used
effectively.
Alteon supports the following interface options:
• A command line interface (CLI) text-based menu system for configuration and management
through a local terminal or through a remote Telnet or SSH session.

Note: For more information regarding CLI commands, see the Alteon Application Switch
Operating System Command Reference.

• A Web-Based Management (WBM) application accessible through a Web browser (HTTPS

access).

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Installing the Platform

• SNMP support for access through the APSolute Vision management system or through network
management software such as HP OpenView.

Note: For more information regarding SNMP MIBs and the commands used to configure SNMP,
see the Alteon Application Switch Operating System Command Reference.

Alteon provides a console port, a management port, and network ports that can be used for
configuring and managing the Alteon platform. This section explains how to establish a connection
using these ports and to perform the initial management port configuration if required.

Note: Make sure the connectivity between your client station and the Alteon platform is not blocked
by a firewall.

Establishing a Console Connection

The configuration of the management port depends on the Alteon platform. This procedure is
applicable for Alteon platforms: 4416 5224 5412 6420 8420

Note: The procedure for configuring the management port for Alteon 4408 and 5208 is detailed
below.

Although Alteon can be managed from any network port, the exclusive management port, MNG 1
saves wasting a port that could otherwise be used for processing data and traffic. This management
port can use Telnet CLI, SSH CLI, SNMP, HTTP, or HTTPS, and is isolated from and does not
participate in the networking protocols that run on the network ports.
The management port must be configured with a static IP address, subnet mask, and default
gateway, and must be enabled before it can be used.

Note: Only management port MNG 1 is operational. The port labeled MNG 2 is reserved for future
use.

Note: For information regarding the various pin-outs of the communications connectors, see Serial
Cable Pin Assignment, page 133.

Notes regarding the default admin password

• You are required to change the default admin password when logging into Alteon with a
factory configurations (with or without management port setting) via CLI (console,
Telnet, or SSH).
If the first login is done via HTTPS or if the configuration is not factory, then no default
admin password change is required.
• Default admin password change is required only for SA, VX and VA mode, but not for
vADC mode (as there is no factory configuration for vADC).
• Default admin password change is also required when converting from SA to VX mode,
or vice-versa, if you select to convert with factory configuration. If you convert keeping
the last known configuration, password change is not required.

• When downgrading, the admin password returns to the default “admin.” If the Admin
password was changed, it will need to be re-configured after the downgrade.

To establish a console connection

1. Using the serial cable, connect the Alteon console port to an ASCII terminal or computer running
terminal emulation.

Note: If you turn on the power to the Alteon platform only after connecting the console, you may
see the message "Type "maint" and press "Enter" to initiate", which refers to accessing the device's
maintenance mode and should be ignored.

2. Do one of the following:

— If you are using an ASCII terminal, power on the terminal.
— If you are using terminal emulation software, configure it with the following port
parameters:
• Bits per second (baud rate): 9600
• Data bits: 8
• Parity: None
• Stop bits: 1
• Flow control: None
3. Press Enter a few times on the terminal until you see a login prompt.
4. Enter the default username and password: admin, admin
The CLI main menu displays.
5. Configure the management IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. Enter the
commands:
/cfg/sys/mmgmt addr <IP address (such as, 192.4.17.101)>
/cfg/sys/mmgmt mask <subnet mask (such as, 255.255.255.0)>
/cfg/sys/mmgmt gw <gateway address (such as, 192.4.17.1)>

Note: For IPv6 configure the IPv6 address, IPv6 prefix length, and IPv6 default gateway
similarly with the commands addr6, prefix6, and gw6 respectively.

6. Enable the management port. Enter the command: /cfg/sys/mmgmt ena

7. Apply and save the configuration.

vADC Console
The vADC console feature provides console access to individual vADCs from a centralized monitor,
and allows you to easily switch between the vADCs in the platform.
The vADC console is enabled by default for versions 31.0 fresh installation and higher, or for
upgrades from versions 31.X and higher.
When upgrading from earlier versions, the vADC console is disabled. In order to enable it run the
command /c/sys/vconsole on the VX console. (This requires applying, saving the configuration,
and rebooting the platform.)

Note: The vADC console communication is through the Alteon VX console port.

Note: The recommended console screen resolution is 80 x 24. If your screen resolution is different,
or you changed the screen resolution settings after the console was opened, it takes up to 15
seconds until the console display adjusts to the new resolution settings. (This occurs even if you
drag the console window to another monitor with a different resolution.)
Use the following key combination to switch between the vADC consoles:
• CTRL+B, N - goes to the next vADC console window.
• CTRL+B, P - goes to previous vADC console window.
• CTRL+B, <terminal slot number> - goes to the specified vADC console window.
For slots large than 10, press CTRL+B, ' and, when prompted, enter the slot number.)
• CTRL+B, 0 - goes to the base VX console window.

Entering CTRL+B, W - presents a list of active vADCs and their console slot numbers.

Note: The slot numbers are determined according the order the vADCs were activated (enabled),
and not according to the vADC ID.

Chapter 4 – Alteon VA Installation and
Configuration
Alteon Virtual Appliance (VA) is an Alteon Application Switch packaged as a virtual appliance running
on server virtualization infrastructure providing identical functionality to the physical Alteon ADC
devices, including local and global server load balancing, Layer 7 capabilities, and application
acceleration.
Alteon VA is part of Radware's Virtual Application Delivery Infrastructure (VADI) architecture, which
integrates the ADC and virtualization services.
Alteon VA is one of the three ADC form factors offered as part of Radware's VADI architecture, along
with a dedicated Alteon device and a vADC instance running on the ADC-VX hypervisor.

Figure 21: Radware’s Alteon VA and VADI Architecture

Alteon VA provides ADC virtualization with ADC-VX, the ADC virtualization and consolidation
platform based on a specialized ADC hypervisor. ADC-VX is built on an architecture that virtualizes
the resources of the Alteon ADC platform including CPU, memory, network and acceleration
resources. This specialized hypervisor runs fully functional virtual ADC instances, each of which
delivers ADC functionality just like a dedicated physical ADC device. Each virtual ADC instance
contains a complete and separate environment of resources, configurations, and management.
This chapter describes the installation and configuration instructions for the various VA platforms,
and includes the following sections:
• ADC Form Factors, page 71
• Alteon VA for VMware Installation and Configuration, page 73.
• Alteon VA for KVM Installation and Configuration, page 85.
• Alteon VA for Microsoft Hyper-V Installation and Configuration, page 92
• Initial Deployment of Alteon VA, page 99.
• Obtaining and Installing a Permanent License for Alteon VA, page 101.

ADC Form Factors

Radware’s VADI infrastructure supports various ADC form factors or platforms:
• Dedicated ADC — The traditional Alteon ADC hardware.
• vADC — A virtualized instance of the Alteon operating system, running on the ADC-VX,
Radware’s ADC hypervisor that enables multiple vADCs on top of a dedicated Alteon ADC.

— Microsoft Hyper-V Server
— Cloud environments:
• OpenStack
• AWS
• Azure

Note: Before powering up your Alteon VA, ensure that you connect the network interfaces to
different networks.

Notes
• When running over VMware or KVM, if the Alteon VA VM is assigned with at least 3 GB RAM,
Alteon VA supports up to 17 virtual interfaces. The first interface is used for management access
and the rest are used for data.
If the Alteon VA VM is assigned with less than 3 GB RAM, the maximum number of virtual
interfaces supported is 3.
• When running over OpenXen or Microsoft HyperV, the maximum number of virtual interfaces
supported is 3.

Note: Before starting the upgrade process, you should free unnecessary disk space by cleaning the
log and dump files. Run the following commands prior to the upgrade to free disk space:

• /maint/cldmp — Clears the core dumps

Alteon VA Installation and Configuration

Alteon VA for VMware Installation and Configuration

To set up Alteon VA for VMware, you must first obtain the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) package
for Alteon VA provided by Radware.

Note: Alteon VA over VMware supports ESX versions: 5.0, 5.1, 5.5. To configure Alteon VA to run
with multiple SPs, the VMware ESX version must be 5.0 or higher.

To configure Alteon VA on VMware to work with multiple SPs, it should use the vmxnet3 virtual
network adapter.

Installation Prerequisites
• Fully functioning VMware infrastructure, including:
— A VMware ESX server (versions: 5.0, 5.1, 5.5)
— An installed vSphere client
• OVF/OVA package from Radware

Notes
• The Open Virtualization Format (OVF) is an open standard for packaging and distributing
virtual appliances or more generally software to be run on virtual machines. The OVF standard is
not tied to any particular hypervisor or processor architecture. The unit of packaging and
distribution is called an OVF Package, which may contain one or more virtual systems each of
which can be deployed to a virtual machine. An OVF package consists of several files placed in
one directory.
• The Open Virtualization Appliance (OVA) is a one-file alternative package, a TAR file with
the OVF directory inside. So if you want to share your VM on the Internet, you can create a
single OVA file (similar to a zip file). To use the file, you have to convert it first to OVF (just like
you unzip a file before you use it).

Alteon VA for KVM Installation and Configuration

To set up Alteon VA for KVM, you must first obtain the KVM package for Alteon VA provided by
Radware.

Note: When configuring Alteon VA in a KVM environment, to work in pass-through mode (Alteon VA
for NFV), you should first validate the physical ports of the host server (PCI addresses) with the VM
running the Alteon VA. For more information, refer to Appendix B - Configuring Alteon VA in PCI
Pass-through Mode, page 139.

Deploying Alteon VA on OpenStack

For deploying the Alteon VA on OpenStack, after completing the Alteon VA installation process

Notes
• If your network has a DHCP server, the Alteon VA IP address displays. If not, configure this
manually. For more information, see the Alteon Command Reference Guide.
• The Alteon VA installation on KVM requires that the vhost-net driver is installed. If the KVM host
does not have this driver configured, you can do this by entering the following command:
/etc/default/qemu-kvm: VHOST_NET_ENABLED=0 to VHOST_NET_ENABLED=1.

Optimizing the VM for Best Alteon VA for NFV Performance

The Alteon VA installation wizard optimizes the VM configuration to achieve the best performance. If
the VM configuration running the Alteon VA was changed after the Alteon VA was already launched
(such as a change in the number of vCPUs of the VM, or a change in the number of vCPUs assigned
to Alteon) you should optimize the VM running the Alteon VA as follows:
• Radware recommends pinning the Alteon NFV vCPUs to physical cores/hyperthreads and not let
them be shared with other VMs, and to prevent the hypervisor from moving them. Memory
over-subscription is discouraged.
• In a hyperthreaded environment, it is best to configure an even number of SP cores and allocate
whole physical cores (both hyperthreads on each physical core) for the Alteon NFV, and not mix
them with other VMs.
• On a host with multiple CPUs using the NUMA architecture, Radware recommends assigning all
Alteon NFV vCPUs to cores/hyperthreads on the same NUMA node.
You should also be aware of the of PCI slots-to-NUMA nodes mapping on such a host machine.
Use the following Linux command to determine to which PCI slot the NIC is connected to:
# cat /sys/class/net/ethX/device/numa_node
where ethX is the Ethernet number. For example: eth0 or eth1
Radware recommends assigning the PCI NICs that are connected to that same NUMA node to
the Alteon NFV running on a specific NUMA node.
Radware recommends configuring the VM to match the NUMA configuration of the host server such
that it will have the same number of NUMA nodes. The vCPUs assigned to the virtual machine should
be distributed between the VM NUMAs.
For example, if the host server has two processors configured as a NUMA system and the virtual
machine is configured for 18 vCPUs, configure the VM as a NUMA with two nodes (same as the host)
with nine vCPUs and 16 GB RAM each.
Such a topology is configured as follows:

<cpu mode='custom' match='exact'>

<model fallback='allow'>SandyBridge</model>
<topology sockets='2' cores='9' threads='1'/>
<feature policy='require' name='pdpe1gb'/>
<numa>
<cell cpus='0-8' memory='16777216'/>
<cell cpus='9-17' memory='16777216'/>
</numa>
</cpu>

90 Document ID: RDWR-ALOS-V3029_IG1712

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Alteon VA Installation and Configuration

To optimize the VM performance, Radware recommends configuring the VM memory between the
host NUMAs, as follows:

<numatune>
<memory mode='interleave' nodeset='0-n'/>
</numatune>

where n=number of NUMA nodes -1.

For the previous example, with two NUMA nodes, enter nodeset='0-1'.
You can use the virsh utility to display the CPU topology. virsh generate an XML that describes the
host hardware as the libvirt sees it. The topology element in that XML includes the available CPUs
and the numbering of the cores in each. These core ID numbers can be used in the Alteon NFV
domain definition to specify the mapping of vCPUs to physical cores.
For example, the following excerpt from the domain XML defines four vCPUs and has each vCPU
pinned to specific hyperthread. Note that this example uses four hyperthreads on two physical
cores. Radware recommends using sibling hyperthreads as it helps maintain a balanced system.

<vcpu placement='static'>4</vcpu>
<cputune>
<vcpupin vcpu='0' cpuset='10'/>
<vcpupin vcpu='1' cpuset='30'/>
<vcpupin vcpu='2' cpuset='11'/>
<vcpupin vcpu='3' cpuset='31'/>
</cputune>

sshfs Installation
When installing Alteon VA for NFV on a remote machine, the sshfs utility must be installed on the
host server. It uses FUSE kernel facilities and SSH tunneling for working with a remote virtual disk.
The following are guidelines for sshfs installation on Ubuntu or RHEL/CentOS systems:
• To install the sshfs package on an Ubuntu host, enter the following command:
sudo apt-get install sshfs -y
• To install the sshfs package on a RHEL 5.x/CentOS 5.x host, enter the following commands:
sudo rpm -Uvh http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/x86_64/epel-
release-5-4.noarch.rpm
sudo yum -y install fuse sshfs
• To install the sshfs package on a RHEL 6.x/CentOS 6.x 64bit host, enter the following
commands:
sudo rpm -Uvh http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/x86_64/epel-

Obtaining and Installing a Permanent License for

Alteon VA
Alteon VA license options include 200 Mbps, 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps throughput licenses with a
1 Mbps license for development, testing and staging environments.

Note: Radware offers a 30-day free trial version of Alteon VA, including all the features and
capabilities of the licensed version. You can download the trial version at:
https://www.radware.com/Resources/SoftwareDownloads. By the end of the evaluation period, you
have to purchase Alteon VA and install a permanent license to continue using it.

To obtain and install a permanent license

1. To obtain a permanent license, you have to provide the VM MAC address to Radware Technical
Support.
2. To get the VM MAC address, enter /oper/swkey in the CLI.
3. After receiving the license, enter the CLI command /oper/swkey license_string, where
license_string is the license provided to you by Radware Technical Support. A confirmation
message displays when the license installation is complete.
This procedure gives you perpetual use of Alteon VA. If you purchased a 200 Mbps, 500 Mbps, or 1
Gbps throughput license, you also must install it using the /oper/swkey command.

Note: When deploying a VM from a snapshot, the MAC address of the virtual machine changes and
the license becomes invalid. For the VA to operate properly, you must either get a new VA license
with the new MAC address or manually set the old MAC address on the new VM.

Chapter 5 – Maintenance and Software Upgrade
This chapter describes how to maintain, upgrade, and recover your Alteon platform, and how to
upgrade your licenses. It includes the following topics:
• Managing Configuration Files, page 103
• Upgrading the Alteon Application Switch, page 103
• Licensing Mechanism, page 105
• Alteon Application Switch Recovery, page 109

Note: For more information on licenses, contact Radware Technical Support.

Managing Configuration Files

To ensure off-device configuration backup, you should always save existing configurations of each
Alteon platform. Radware recommends saving configurations periodically on the physical platform.
For information on managing the configuration files, see the Alteon Command Reference.

Upgrading the Alteon Application Switch

You can upgrade your Alteon platform with newer software releases. Your maintenance contract
determines whether you are entitled to new software versions with new features or only
maintenance versions.
Before you can upgrade the platform, you first need to download the new software image file.
Check with Radware Technical Support for version availability before performing software download
or upgrade.

Note: Alteon VA upgrades from versions earlier than 29.5 are not supported due to kernel changes.

Downloading the Software Image File

You can download the software image from the website:
http://portals.radware.com/Customer/Home/Downloads/Application-Delivery-Load-Balancing/
?Product=
Select the Download Software icon for the version and platform you want to upgrade.
Make this file available on the host and run FTP/TFTP/SCP server for the directory where the Alteon
software is located.
An upgrade password is required when you upgrade to a higher major version, identified by the two
left-most numbers. For example, an upgrade from 30.5.x to 31.0.x.
You must obtain this password before you load the upgrade file onto the Alteon platform. If you do
not supply the correct password during the upgrade process, you cannot upgrade, Alteon aborts the
upgrade process, and reverts to the installed version of software.
You can obtain this password from the Web site:
http://portals.radware.com/Customer/Home/Tools/Password-Generator/

Document ID: RDWR-ALOS-V3029_IG1712 103

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Maintenance and Software Upgrade

The upgrade password is based on the base MAC address (of the first interface) of your platform and
on the version software file size.
An upgrade to a minor version (for example, from 30.5.0.0 to 30.5.3.0) does not require a
password.

Upgrading the Alteon Platform

An upgrade enables the new features and functions on the platform without altering the existing
configuration. In exceptional circumstances, new firmware versions are incompatible with legacy
configuration files from earlier versions. This most often occurs when you attempt to upgrade from
very old firmware to the most recently available version.

Notes
• Radware recommends saving the existing configuration before upgrading.
• Disable session mirroring before upgrading.
• Perform any required configuration changes before upgrading.

To upgrade the Alteon software version

1. Save the configuration of the main (primary) and backup (secondary) platforms and upload
them to the server.
Supply a passkey to include all private keys needed for a full configuration backup.

Note: This full configuration backup will be needed in case of a future downgrade.

2. Load the new software to the backup platform.

Enter the command /boot/gtimg

Note: For more information on the upgrade command and options, see the Alteon Command
Reference.

3. Disable all data ports on the backup platform.

Enter the command /cfg/port x/dis.
Apply and save the configuration.

Note: Alternatively, you can disable the data ports on the platform that they are connected to.

4. Upgrade the backup platform to the new image.

Enter the command /boot/image.
5. Enable all data ports on the backup platform.
Enter the command /cfg/port x/ena.
Apply and save the configuration.

Note: If you disabled the data ports, enable them.

104 Document ID: RDWR-ALOS-V3029_IG1712

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Maintenance and Software Upgrade

6. Verify that the VRRP status changed to backup.

7. Perform failover to the backup platform by disabling all the data ports of the master platform (as
in step 3). Ensure that a VRRP failover was activated by verifying that the secondary platform
VRRP status is now master/active.
8. Load the new software to the main platform.
9. When the system reboots, the upgrade of the main platform to the new software release starts.
After the upgrade procedure finishes and the Alteon promt displays, log into the system.
10. Enable all data ports on the main platform.
11. Return to the main platform if needed.

Notes
• Due to changes in the configuration file structure to support new features and update current
ones, after the upgrade it is possible that the diff or diff flash will not be empty. To fix this, you
must Apply and Save the entire configuration file. If no change was performed to the
configuration (that is, the diff is empty), perform any change in the configuration and perform
the Apply and Save (for example, run the command /cfg/sys/idle X/apply/save).
• When you install a new software image on hardware platforms, the currently loaded BIOS is
updated if it does not match the new BIOS. If you are instructed by Radware Technical Support
to do so, you can force the BIOS installation even if the version remains unchanged, using the
following syntax: /boot/image image1|image2 -f

Downgrading (Rollback)

Notes
• Before performing upgrade, back up your current configuration. In case of version rollback, after
the downgrade boot Alteon from the factory configuration and manually upload the saved
configuration.
• Validation is performed on saved configurations. Upon downgrade, parameters that were
changed and/or added since the previous version may not be supported and you may
experience unapplied configuration parameters.
• When downgrading to a version earlier than 28.1.5.0, the configuration is restored to the factory
default, preserving the IPv4 management interface access. Therefore, Radware recommends
saving the configuration and reload it after the rollback.
• When downgrading, the admin password returns to the default “admin.” If the Admin password
was changed, it will need to be re-configured after the downgrade.
• Due to changes in the configuration file structure to support new features or change of existing
ones, after the downgrade it is possible that the diff or diff flash will not be empty. To fix this,
you must Apply and Save the entire configuration file. If no change was performed to the
configuration (that is, the diff is empty), perform any change in the configuration and perform
the Apply and Save (for example perform the command /cfg/sys/idle X/apply/save).

Licensing Mechanism
The licensing mechanism is designed to provide an easy path for adding product capabilities and
scaling up capacity after the initial product purchase, without service interruption. There is no need
for Alteon platform replacement or even reboot.

Document ID: RDWR-ALOS-V3029_IG1712 105

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Maintenance and Software Upgrade

A license is based on the MAC address of the Alteon platform and is a one-time license; after a
license is changed, the old license key cannot be reused.
There are two types of licenses: capabilities license and capacity licenses.

Capabilities License
This license is available on all platforms and allows customers to add product-specific capabilities.
This license is accumulative; it can enable multiple license-based capabilities (features). When you
purchase subsequent features, the permanent license string is modified to include the new
supported features.
The licensed capabilities include:
• slb—Basic Load Balancing (always present, provided by default)
• cookie—Cookie Persistency
• global—Global Server Load Balancing
• llb—Inbound Link Load Balancing
• bwm—Bandwidth Management
• ados—Advanced Denial of Service (ADoS) Protection
• itm—Bandwidth Management plus Security

The capabilities license string that you get from Technical Support has the following syntax:
aas-slb-[<feature1>-<feature2>-<featureN>-password
where
• feature1 through featureN are strings separately representing licensed features.
• password is a generated string based on the Base MAC address of the platform.

Capacity Licenses
These licenses define the capacity levels enabled on the Alteon platform and allow for smooth on-
demand capacity scalability, by installing new software keys on the Alteon platform.
Capacity levels are monitored and alerts can be sent to the console, Telnet, and SSH interfaces and
syslog servers when a configured threshold is passed or a capacity level is reached, thus advising
when capacity increase is required. For more information, see the /cfg/sys/alerts menu in the
Alteon Command Reference.
The capacity license string that you get from Radware Technical Support has the following syntax:
<capacity type>-<capacity level>-password
where
• capacity type is the capacity type enabled by the license.
• capacity level is the capacity level enabled by the license.
• password is a generated string based on the Base MAC address of the platform.

The following types of capacity licenses are available on Alteon platforms:

• Throughput License — The throughput license determines the maximum throughput allowed,
measured as total outbound throughput via all data ports (for Alteon 4408 platforms, measured
as total inbound throughput via all data ports) and enables throughput capacity upgrade.
License string: <throughput level>-password
• SSL License — The SSL license controls the number of new SSL connections per second (new
SSL handshakes) that Alteon can process and enables SSL offload capacity upgrade.

106 Document ID: RDWR-ALOS-V3029_IG1712

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Maintenance and Software Upgrade

License string: aas-ssl-<SSL CPS level>-password

• Compression Throughput License — The Compression Throughput license defines the HTTP
compression capacity level and enables capacity upgrade (compression throughput in Mbps).
License string: aas-compression-<compression throughput level>-password
• Alteon FastView License — The FastView license defines the throughput level optimized using
FastView and enables capacity upgrade (throughput in Mbps).
License string: aas-fastview-<fastview throughput level>-password

Notes
— The FastView license includes a compression license matching the FastView license capacity.
— The capacity of the FastView license must be equal to or greater than the capacity of the
Alteon throughput license. Upgrade the FastView capacity license before you upgrade the
Alteon throughput license.
• APM License — This license defines the Application Performance Monitoring capacity level and
enables capacity upgrade (sampled pages per minute).
License string: aas-apm-<Pages per Minute level>-password

Time-Based License
A time-based license includes a start date and an end date. The license takes effect only within the
time frame of the license, from 00:00 on the start date until 23:59 on the end date.
A license can have a future start date in the following cases:
• There is no previous active license for that capability.
• There is a previous active license that expires at a maximum of one day before the new license
starts (new-license-start-date is equal to or earlier than old-license-end-date+1).
Expiration warnings (console, syslog, SNMP traps) are issued 30 days, 15 days, 10 days, 5 days, 4
days, 3 days, 2 days, and 1 day before the license expires and each day after expiration.
A grace period is given after the expiration date. When the grace period passes, the capability is
deactivated and an error is issued. The license will display as Expired.
If you have a time-based throughput license, when the license expires the throughput is reset to
default.
Time-based licenses are implemented for:
• APM
License string— aas-apm-<apm level>-<start date>-<end date>
When the APM license expires, the APM script injection performed by the Proxy stops and APM-
related script is not performed.
• FastView
License string:
(version 30.0) aas-fv-<fv level>-<start date>-<end date>
(version 30.1) aas-fastview-<start date>-<end date>
and aas-fastview+-<start date>-<end date>
When the FastView license expires, the Alteon Proxy stops accelerating traffic.

Replacing a Power Supply

This procedure details how to replace (hot-swap) a failed power supply module for the Alteon
platforms.
If a power supply fails, the platform activates an alarm, sends a syslog message, and lights the red
front-panel PWR LED.

Note: Before deciding to replace a power supply module, ensure that the problem is not with the
power source or power cable or connection.

Some Alteon platforms are available with only one power supply, and some platforms have,
optionally, two load-sharing power supplies:
• If the platform has only one power supply and it fails, the system shuts down and a new power
supply must be installed and the power reconnected.
• If the platform has dual power supplies, if one power supply fails it can be replaced (hot-
swapped) without shutting down the system.
This procedure is similar for both AC and a DC power supply modules (where applicable).

Caution:

• Only experienced personnel should install or remove hardware components. Installing or

removing components incorrectly can permanently damage the platform.
• To protect the platform and its modules from electrostatic discharge damage, make sure that
you are properly grounded before you touch any internal components. Radware recommends
using the grounding wrist strap that is included in the upgrade kit. The grounding screw on the
rear of the platform provides a chassis grounding point.

To replace the power supply module

1. Disconnect the power cable from the faulty power supply.

Caution: For a platform with dual power supplies, do not disconnect the power cable from the
working power supply, or the system will shut down.

Document ID: RDWR-ALOS-V3029_IG1712 113

2. Remove the screw of the power supply module that secure it to the chassis, lift the handle and
pull the module from the chassis.
For Alteon 4408/5208 platforms: Push the lever towards the handle and then use the handle to
pull the module from the chassis.
Dispose of the old power supply module properly.
3. Fully insert the new power supply into the chassis and replace and tighten the screw holding it in
place.
For Alteon 4408/5208 platforms: Fully insert the new power supply into the chassis until it clicks
into place.
4. Reconnect the power cables to the new power supply.
5. Verify that the green LED indicator on the power supply lights up and that the power supply’s fan
is working.

Replacing the Compact Flash

Note: There is no compact flash in the Alteon 5224.

Appendix B – Configuring Alteon VA in PCI
Pass-through Mode
When configuring Alteon VA in a KVM environment, to configure Alteon VA to work in pass-through
mode (Alteon VA for NFV), you must associate the physical ports of the host server with the VM
running the Alteon VA.
This appendix describes how to identify the physical NIC ports and their associated PCI addresses
for the Alteon VA in a KVM environment.
To perform this association, after inserting the NICs, complete the following steps:
1. Validating the PCI Slots, page 139
2. Validating the PCI Slot Addresses, page 140
3. Association of the NIC ports in Alteon VA, page 141

Validating the PCI Slots

When you insert the PCI NICs into the host server, write down the slot number.
For performance optimization, when more than one NIC is used, Radware recommends that you
distribute the NICs among slots that are distributed to different NUMA systems. Refer to your
server's hardware specification documentation to understand the distribution of the PCI slots among
the different processors/NUMA systems. For example, in the HP DL380 Generation9 server (see
Figure 42 - HP DL380 Generation9 Server Specifications Example, page 139, below) slots 1-3
(marked (1) in the figure) and slots 4-6 (marked (2) in the figure) are distributed to different NUMA
systems:

Alteon Installation and Maintenance Guide
Configuring Alteon VA in PCI Pass-through Mode

Validating the PCI Slot Addresses

After the NICs are in their slots, determine the PCI addresses of the ports.
The main action in configuring Alteon VA in pass-through mode in a KVM environment is identifying
the PCI port addresses of the physical Ethernet ports.

To identify the physical slot PCI address

1. Run the following Linux command: lspci -vv>PCImapping.txt

This command creates a file, PCImapping.txt, which includes the PCI mapping of the host (see
the example in Figure 43 - PCImapping.txt Example, page 141).
2. In the PCImapping.txt file, search for the string "Physical Slot: 5" (for example, if the NIC was
inserted into slot number 5).
In Figure 43 - PCImapping.txt Example, page 141, the string "Physical Slot: 5" is shown marked
(1).
3. Above the string "Physical Slot: 5", at the beginning of the section, find the string "Ethernet
Controller" (marked (2) in the example).
4. The numbers at the beginning of the row ("84:00.0" in the example) are the PCI address of the
first port on that slot.
5. Write down the PCI address. You will need it for the Alteon VA installation wizard.
6. Perform step 2 through step 5 to repeat this search for the PCI addresses of all the ports on the
slot.
7. Perform step 2 through step 5 to repeat this search for all the NIC slots on your server.

Association of the NIC ports in Alteon VA

After you have all the PCI addresses written down, continue with the Alteon VA installation detailed
in Alteon VA for KVM Installation and Configuration, page 85.
In the installation wizard in the pane for configuring traffic interfaces, select the PCI ports using the
PCI addresses that you wrote down.

source license agreement on the actions set forth in Section 6 above), the terms of any such

Agreement are not transferable and will terminate upon: (i) termination of this License
Agreement, or (ii) transfer of the Software, or (iii) in the event the Software is provided as an
embedded or bundled component of another Radware Product, when the Software is un-bundled
from such Product or otherwise used other than as part of such Product. If the Software is
licensed on subscription basis, this Agreement will automatically terminate upon the termination
of your subscription period if it is not extended.
