Personal stretch (area of growth) - Learning how to communicate in a professional manner.

Having to write an email to the principal and or the head
of school to see if I am allowed to have a drive at school.
- Dealing with all the flyers and marketing is a new
personal stretch. Creating good information for the flyer
and drive and then getting them where they belong will
be a stretch as it is a large undertaking and responsibility
that I haven’t had before.
- Forming my own drive and being responsible for it is
something I haven’t done before. I will be responsible for
making sure flyers are created and that boxes are
available for the day(s) of collection.

Product Description: My product idea is to create a drive/donation day at all three schools for students
to donate travel size personal hygiene products (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner), hard
candy (mints, life saver), gently used or new toys/crafts (coloring books, markers, color pencils, little toy
cars, etc), or books for all ages. I would create a donation day either once or twice a month for two
months depending on participation. In return for donating, I was hoping to see if students could dress
down. The donations will be brought to the Cove Central Campus where my mentor Alyssa and I will
create care packages for the sponsorship kids that live in the villages of South Africa and Egypt.
Depending on donations the care packages will contain hygiene items, hand candy, toys and craft items
and/or books. If extra care packages are made they will be handed out to local children/families in need.
The care packages will be sent in the with members that signed up for the mission trips. It would cost too
much to ship the packages to South Africa and Egypt and finding addresses would be difficult as most of
them do not live in specific places.

Life in Public Relations

In the 19th century public relations came to life (Eruturk). But around the 20th century, two pioneer

workers by the name of lvy L. Lee and Edward L. Bernays made connections to define public relations

(“Public” ).With their knowledge, they linked public relations to social science and psychology (“Public”). In

today's world, public relations expanded their areas of expertise. This profession has taken on more

responsibilities including work from manufacturers, financial institutions, community organizations, churches,

and hospitals. With so many operations of public relations, it has become necessary to divide the field up.

Experts help companies and individuals to determine what information needs to become public knowledge

(“Public”). Public relations provides information to citizens about education, the economy, social events, and

politics.

As a management function, public relations creates, establishes, executes policies and holds the

responsibility of programing for organizations. It impacts the public’s opinion and controls reactions toward the

ideas, products and the organization itself (Gray). Public relations began because companies needed a means to

fix the damage caused from press accusations (Erturk). When changes occur, those within public relations

ensure the right information gets communicated to employees, customers, the community and the government
Burby 1

alike. This ensures that everyone receives the same information from the same source. Businesses utilize public

relations to increase their image to the general public, along with their respective customer base (Gray).

Public relations exists from a business point of view to build relationships, restore a company’s image

with the public, and to provide structure to company communications (Gray). Relationship building helps gain

more trust and respect from employees and even clients (Gray). By creating employee and client trust, feedback

becomes necessary to improve the current and future image of the company. A positive relationship represents

the foundation for the company's image, once something negative occurs, restoring that image becomes more

tricky (“Conarroe”). Communicating the truth remains paramount in either situation, however restoring an

image built on a shaky relationship changes the mode of communication and possibly the message altogether

(Gray). To ensure a solid company communication structure exists, every department head must buy into the

plan (Olsen). The communication structure should align with the image the company wishes to share with their

audience. Problems will occur when the alignment between the two diverge. According to statistics 91% people

who work in the public relation work with business and clients in personal then over email.
