Math:  What does it mean to rotate an object?
General Outcome 6: Describe and analyze
position and motion of objects and shapes.
6.8. Identify and describe a single transformation,
including a translation, rotation, and reflection of
2-D shapes.
6.9. Perform, concretely, a single transformation
(translation, rotation or reflection) of a 2-D shape,
and draw the image.

Prerequisite Knowledge Plan for Differentiation


 Basic math and number sense UDL

classroom for students that need it. Priority is
given to students that have certain difficulties

Introduction
1. Move all the tables out of the way.
2. On the smart board is written: “Using the entire class, make a perfect shape with the
following qualities: 1. This shape has no sides 2. This shape is a polygon with an
infinite amount of sides 3. Each point on this shape is an equal distance from the centre.
3. Have students get into this shape by communicating with each other.
4. Now rotate!
5. Now have students get into the following shape: 1. This shape has three sides and three
vertices 2. The sum of all the angles in this shape is 180 degrees
6. Now rotate.

Assessment
● visual check for understanding of game (e.g finger voting, plickers, etc.)
● Casual conversation

Activity Sequence
1. Get into groups of 4. Grab grid paper and a ruler. Draw out a shape of your choice on your
grid paper. Experiment with rotating that tangram with different turns. Experiment with
different points of rotation. Have each group show their shape and what happened when
they used different points of rotation.
2. You can also rotate a shape around a point of rotation that is not on the shape. What do you
think will happen when you use a point of rotation that is not on the shape? How did you
do it. Have each group explain how they navigated this task.
