Puesto que todos los antiguos pretendientes de Helena estaban vinculados por juramento a
ayudar a su marido en tales circunstancias, muchos de los gobernantes más destacados y de
los héroes de Grecia estarían obligados a luchar como aliados suyos. En las Ciprias, Menelao (y
es posible que también Agamenón) viajo por toda Grecia con Néstor para reclutar jefes para la
expedición, recordando a los antiguos pretendientes sus obligaciones. De todos los
pretendientes, solo Odiseo intento evitar la convocatoria. Otros aceptaron tomar parte por
voluntad propia, como el caso excepcional de Aquiles, que era un niño en la época del
matrimonio de Helena, pero que era ahora invitado a participar por ser un joven guerrero
excepcionalmente prometedor.

and raises his right hand to his mouth, palm inward. Thetis, dressed in a purple peplos,
gestures with her right hand. Behind her stands Menelaos. Patroklos stands behind Achilles.
His raised left hand is not preserved (perhaps he was pushing Achilles forward?). Behind him
are Odysseus and Menestheus. All the warriors are naked and barefoot. Menelaos and
Odysseus are bearded. Menestheus has long sideburns

ηλικιωμένο Νέστορα της Πύλου και πατέρα γενναίου γιου και στη συνέχεια μαζί, για να
πείσουν τον Οδυσσέα και τον Αχιλλέα, αδέσμευτοι από τον όρκο προς τον Τυνδάρεο, ο
πρώτος γιατί δεν είχε διεκδικήσει σοβαρά την Ελένη, μια και ήξερε την προτίμηση του
Τυνδάρεου, και ο δεύτερος γιατί, λόγω ηλικίας, δεν την είχε καν διεκδικήσει. Μαζί με τον
