PERIMETER

AND AREA
PERIMETER &
AREA SUMMARY
POLYGONS
Polygons are closed figures made up of three or more line segments.
Perimeter, Area and Volume

PERIMETER
The total length of external boundary of a closed figure in a plane is called its ‘Perimeter’.
Perimeter of Square = 4 x (Length of each side)
Perimeter of Rectangle = 2 x (Length + Breadth)

AREA
The space occupied in plane by a closed figure is called its ‘Area’.

Area of Square = (Length of each side) x (Length of each side)

Area of Rectangle = Length x Breadth

VOLUME
The space occupied by a solid shape is called its ‘Volume’. In other words, Volume is the
-
capacity of a 3 D shape.

Volume of Cube = (Length of each side) x (Length of each side) x (Length of each side)
Volume of Cuboid = Length x Breadth x Height

CONVERSION OF AREA
The SI unit of length (or distance) is ‘metre’ which is denoted by ‘m’.
The unit for area can be converted as follows:
1m2 = 10,000cm2
1cm2 = 1/(10000)m2

CONVERSION OF VOLUME
The SI unit of volume (or capacity) is ‘Litre’ which is denoted by ‘L’.
The unit for volume can be converted as follows:
1m3 = 10,00,000cm3
1cm3 = 1/(1000000)m3
1m3 = 1000L
1L=1000cm3

FINDING THE AREA
OF A RECTANGLE
Use the clues provided to find the width of each rectangle.

length (L)
Review:
Rectangle Area = width x length

Width is the shortest side of a rectangle. width (W)

Length is the longest side of a rectangle.

Example: 48
Area = ________ sq.ft.
8
Length = _________ft.

W area = 48 Area = width x length

48 = width x 8
Therefore, width = 48 = _______
