The life of a marketer

Marketing represents an exciting career path that requires many different skill sets.

Marketers must acquire excellent people skills and appreciate an ever changing environment.

Personal determination contributes to a marketers success in the field. Marketing evolved from

basic skills to adapting to today’s complex technological world. Formal education, although not

necessary, helps marketers discern their way through connections and experiences. For many

years, marketers have trained in order to sell products to a wide range of clients.

To fully understand the life of marketer, one must examine their role. Marketing stands

essentially as a strategy that entails products, price, and the distribution of products to

consumers. It remains essential for the the marketer to understand what the consumer or

customer wants to purchase by the utilization through market segmentation. Professional

marketers use learned skills such as product strategy, promotion strategy, branding, and

advertising.

An important aspect of marketing consist of studying or comprehending the history of

marketing. The relevance of understanding the history has shaped the development of marketing

and led to theories and 20th century education to sell and market products with learned specific

applications to perform salesmanship to consumers with budgeted resources. Marketing

Miller 2

historically began as door to door sales, especially after WWII, less education based practices

involved micromarketing to consumers. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, males accounted for

the majority of the marketing business and marketing research became more important to the

marketing professionals. In the 1980’s, there stood an emphasis on macromarketing, marketing

to larger groups of people, which utilizes research on consumers needs.

Currently, mass marketing has become a broad business due to social media, television

advertisements, bill boards, and sponsoring events. The lack of technology throughout the

1950’s and 1960’s made it difficult to know what consumers would buy. During this time period,

marketers sold products with the use of paper products such as posters and newspapers without

the help of social media.

Marketing strategies changed when various forms of social media came about in the 20th

century. Marketing currently has evolved to advertise on social media sites, such as the internet.

Segmentation within marketing persist as an important part of building the business brand.

Several studies with focused research on segmentation and the effects of sales have

revolutionized the way marketing has evolved. An important fact to note, several studies

conducted regard the effectiveness of segmentation by focusing on the German book trade, from

1800 -1928. (Tadajewski) This book credits marketing segmentation practice by using age,

gender, occupation, educational level, religion, geography, social class, income, shopping

preference, and lifestyle to give consumer results to certain markets or consumers (Tadajewski).

Historically, the training for salesman or marketing existed as more of a directive one on

one person approach which was not adequate, especially post Great Depression. It began in the

early 20th century with training and education for sales professionals that led to the
Miller 3

“standardized procedures and the integration of selling and sales management with marketing

and literature developed, such as the Scientific Management Principles to Selling”(Tadajewski).

Although technology advances stay closely looked at to determine the effectiveness of selling, a

crucial aspect of marketing includes understanding the innovations, and transformations, that

have evolved with the history of selling and the fitted contributions to marketing. Specific skills

sets, such as marketing communications and processes that have led to the the creation of the

satisfied customer, as well as the essential endpoint of a successful marketer. Universities and

colleges across the U.S. teach marketing and business. East Carolina University in Greenville

NC is an exceptional university to specialize in marketing. Marketing education in the United

Kingdom provides instruction similarly to domestic instruction in the United States.

East Carolina University offers some exceptional classes that help when a student majors

in marketing. ECU gives students the awareness to develop good development strategies. There

remain many students that have successfully graduated and succeeded with careers in

advertising, sales management, businesses marketing and many more. If an individual wanted to

become a marketer, ECU would be an excellent choice. Students involved in OSCM, which

stands for Operations and Supply Chain Management, students learn how to improve systems

that create and deliver the firm's primary product and services, or can become managers that

assist with the and buying and distribution of good and sales. The OCSM also prepares the

graduates for the certified purchasing manager examination. With a large amount of focus from

students, they can succeed in marketing from the programs that ECU offers.

Another school to look with a superior marketing program as Appalachian State

University. This University helps students identify the problems, developing plans, perform

programs, with their facility. The student that have took on marketing from Appalachian state

University have placed tenth out of 70 universities in the International collegiate (Appalachian).

sales competition. The International Collegiate Sales Competition exist as a competition that

shows how well marketers can sell a product. The competition usually gets held in Florida.

Another course that Appalachian State offers persist as a finance course. Financing exist as large

amounts of money funded by the government or by large communities. This financing course

helps students develop leadership skills for the business, governmental, and educational

communities.

Communication remains a great field to study in college because the field helps students

obtain a successful career in marketing. An important aspect of marketing exist as having good

communication skills. University of North Carolina at Wilmington and University of North

Carolina at Chapel Hill both stand as excellent universities that offer business and marketing

degrees. UNCW graduates have gone on to career such as sales, entrepreneurship, human

resources and etc. Communications stands as an important course in the this university because

University of North Carolina at Wilmington wants their student to strive and take on their careers

with this study. Richard K Olson, a teacher at Wilmington, remains extremely proud of his

students that have graduated and successfully took on a career in marketing with the help of his

communications course. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a strong course in

communications because the not only focus on one simple communication they focus more

abroad. They also have student have graduated and successfully took on careers that involve

business such as marketing.

Collegiate courses or classes that can help enhance a marketing or communications

Miller 5

degree persist as public speaking and english. Public speaking remains an important course for

marketers to take part in. Student at Pine Lake have the opportunity to participate in this course

during their senior year. This class helps individuals speak out in front of large groups when

presenting a product that they want to sell. Public speaking also helps build a relationship and a

trust with the audience. Some people have a difficult time trying to find the best way to say

things, such as when they talk about their product that they want to sell. Public speaking gives

the opportunity convey to the audience on a message, this will help in the career of marketing. In

the class students will complete demonstrations that gives examples for the activity. For

example, one of the demonstrations showed how an individual would do their own laundry. The

student will show the steps on how to do the laundry physically. Then teacher will grade on how

the student relays the information to the class, the teacher also grades on how the student

presented the information. This includes the personality of the student that wants to become a

marketer. The personality that a teacher grades on in public speaking stands as an outgoing

personality that connects with the audience. In the class, individuals will also learn about

debating topics. This will help people come up with situations faster when presenting. In

marketing this will help individuals convey a message faster and when or if they lose memory

about what they want to say to a potential client to sell a product, it helps with improve as well.

To summarize the class, public speaking stands as a great class to partake in for people interested

in a career in marketing.

English represents another collegiate courses or classes that will help students improve on

their career (“Marketing”). English stands as an important course that students need to take if

they plan to take on the career. English stands as a good class for marketing because it helps
Miller 6

people develop better vocabulary and grammar through novel studies, english test, and grammar

practice. Some students may not enjoy reading in english, but they must also realize the class

also offers different aspects of the english language such as writing, vocabulary, and grammar. In

marketing when selling a product one needs to have a presentation that helps them show what

they’re going to need to talk about when selling the product. English can help with that by

helping students write better and it also helps future marketers become great writers when

advertising. English can also help similarly to how public speaking does. English helps students

become better speakers through grammar and vocabulary. For example, one activity exist when

the student has to present a speech that gives a explanation on how police brutality prevailed

worse than police brutality in the past. Then the professors will grade on how the student’s body

language portrayed their attitude and how comfortable they looked when they presented. English

stands as a mandatory class that every student has to take for four years in high school. English

courses help students in the future even if they did not want to take the class.

The day to day life as a marketer can prevail good and bad at the same time. It all

depends on the marketer. During their day the marketer have to deal with tough clients whether

they like it or not. For example let's say this marketer wants to sell a dvd player and the client

would simply zone out when the marketer tries to sell the product. To become a good marketer,

one must have the ability to grab a client’s attention whether the marketer has to speak out loud

or make himself visible in order for the client to see why their product stands as the best. The

marketer also has to remain calm even if the client starts giving the marketer a hard time. This

includes when the client has an attitude or the client tries to get under marketer’s skin. When

faced with difficulties, marketers must simply take a deep breath and continue with a smile.
Miller 7

There research has concluded that when the marketer projects a positive attitude, the client gets

drawn in solely because of their attitude. The marketer’s attitude towards the clients should

remain friendly and welcoming, simply because it makes the clients more comfortable. Another

good personality a marketer should have good listening skills. Good listening skills provide good

manners toward the clients. When selling a product, good listening skills stands as a good way to

listen on what the client has to say about the product. When listening to the ideas from the client

the marketer can grab personal things to say that compare to the client's situation about the

product.

According to David Pagliughi, a marketing professional, “Calculating returns on

investment persist as one of the biggest challenges within the field of marketing. The success of

any given marketing strategy can remain difficult to pinpoint, and with today’s complex

marketing platforms, it remains more difficult than ever to report marketing success accurately.

Also, in today’s marketing, the internet and social media have a major impact on buying

decisions. Customer and third party reviews area available on almost anything a customer wants

to purchase, and usually there misleading information out there could negatively affect a

consumer’s decision. A major challenge as for any marketing position stands as the speed that

information can flow. Statistics show that the majority of people have the human nature to tell

people about bad experiences or bad products. Rarely do people go out of their way to talk about

good experiences. Customer service stands as the one area where customers remain willing to

share their experiences, and it remains more important than ever to ensure that the company a

person works for goes out of their way to give the customer the best experience possible.”

another bit ot of information included his thoughts about procrastinating with a project, “With
Miller 8

today’s technologies and constant availability, it remains quite common that people in the

workforce obtain jobs that would have taken multiple people in the past. With this, multi-tasking

and a juggling of projects stands as an inevitable fact of life. David Pagliughi has found that the

best way to keep track of everything and to not drop the ball stands as making a list and set

priorities. Based on the importance of some projects versus others, less important tasks or

projects may go right down to the deadline. He wouldn’t call it procrastinating, but rather,

prioritizing” (Pagliughi).

Marketers revamped their approaches during different periods to reach a broader

demographic market. In the 1960’s, marketing persisted as a one on one approach, however did

not reach a huge population to sell their product. As time has evolved, People have seen

marketing reach a broader market, or population, due to social media outlets. Presently, the

marketing community sees a strong demand for marketing that has cultivated colleges to create a

degree within this specialized area to have the effective skill sets to become proficient in this

profession.
