The main features of my story had to include a cowgirl, who was
quick to anger, a Wild West town, a saloon, a sunrise and bugs. I
decided to combine the cowgirl character with the bug
requirement. After thorough research and thumbnailing, I came
up with a few options that depicted bug like cowgirls. As I
wanted to set the bug in a wild west setting I researched bugs
peculiar to this environment. The red velvet ant is unique to the
Wild West, its features seemed to suit my character. I
particularly felt that its deadly sting demonstrated its fast acting
change in mood. However, although my character is an angry
ant, I wanted her to look harmless and vulnerable – almost cute.
As a result, my character on the surface, appears to be cute
and sweet. The reality is she can be dangerous, sly and
tempestuous cowgirl who is a match to the humans in town.
Whilst researching Texas Bugs I observed
and sketched out the features and
Characteristics that I wanted to see in my
character. I identified 5 possible bugs that
could represent my design:

1.  Lady Bug

2.  Kissing Bug
3.  Cicada Wasp
4.  Differential Grasshopper
5.  Red Velvet Ant (or known as
Cowkiller)
