Love

“There are all kinds of love in this world but never the same love twice”(Fitzgerald). Six

types of love can be found in everyday life. Narcissism is love for yourself, most people see this

as a conceited type of love. Platonic is the love you have for your friends. When you love

someone but the feeling is not mutual it is called unrequited love, on the other hand, when the

feeling is mutual it is romantic. Love for your different religious beliefs is spiritual love. Familial

is the love you have for your family. One of the types of love that is most evident in Romeo and

Juliet and modern day is familial love.

Familial love is one of the most common types of love in modern day. You grow up with

it and see it all the time. Based on the survey I created, which was given to a variety of different

people, the type of love that was chosen the most was familial love. Many people said they see

love for family the most in modern day. Love for their children, siblings, parents, and relatives

were all examples people gave. In modern day people spend so much time with their families, so

it is logical to say many people experience this type of love the most.

There are many examples in Romeo and Juliet displaying familial love in both the

families. The whole story is based on a family feud. The Capulet and Montague families each

have a strong bond for their own family but hate one another. There is a very strong almost

mother-daughter bond between the nurse and Juliet. When the nurse says “Faith, I can tell her

age unto an hour” it shows she knows Juliet better than Lady Capulet (Shakespeare). Also, the

way the prince got upset when Tybalt killed Mercutio showed how much he loved his cousin.

The prince spared Romeo and only exiled him rather than killing him when he found out Romeo

killed Tybalt, because Tybalt killed Mercutio. In Romeo and Juliet familial love is found the

most often.

The familial love shown in Romeo and Juliet has some differences from modern day

because they occur in different time periods. An example of this is the Capulet family; Instead of

Lady Capulet taking care of Juliet as a baby they hired a nurse to do it. Lord and Lady Capulet

do not exactly care about Juliet’s daily needs, which is normal for the wealthier people in that

time. The nurse acts as more of a mother than Lady Capulet. In modern day some people may

have a nanny, but based on my survey most people said their parents take care of them. Also, in

modern day many parents do not have a nanny to show they are wealthy, instead they have a

nanny because they are working full time. It is logical to conclude familial love in modern day

may have some similar traits to what it was in the 1500s, but it has developed differently over

time.

The type of love found most often in Romeo and Juliet and modern day is familial love.

The families in Romeo and Juliet show hate for each other, but familial love is shown within

their own families. Just as these families have a dependence on one another, the same occurs in

modern day. Love for your family is natural, instinctual, and is often the first type of love many

people experience. This causes familial love to be the most commonly known type of love.
