Glen Willow Community Garden

Contributing Boulder Environment


A cooperative project by CU Boulder, Boulder Housing Partners
& the Residents of Glen Willow

SUMMER/2010 VOL. 1 ISSUE 1

We started digging out the beds and readying the


soil in May and June by hand. It was hot and hard
work, but by May we were ready to plant flowers and
July we were able to plant late summer crops.
May 2010
Northeast building # 303 planted in 3 beds; 1- 4x4, 1-
4x2 and 1-5x2:
 Sunflowers  Basil
 Morning Glories  Tarragon
 Nasturtium  Hibiscus
 Sage  Cosmos
 Lavender  Foxglove
 Rosemary  Snap Dragons

Delphinium, Foxgloves, Phlox, Butterfly Bush,


Peppermint and Lavender were already existing from
the year before
Planted from seed:
 Sunflowers
 Cosmos
 Snap Dragons
 Basil
 Morning Glories
 Nasturtium
Planted from plants:
Plants were gifted from cuttings and root divides
given by gardens in the Boulder Community and the  Lavender
downtown neighborhood which made it even more  Sage
special and magical.  Rosemary
 Tarragon
 Foxglove
 Hibiscus
Additional flowers planted were Salvia, Echinacea and
Rudbeckia

July 7, 2010
Eight residents met with CU Students Bryant and Wynne
and Karin from BHP to form a plan of action.
Decided at this meeting were:
 Date to plant – Sat July 17th
 Next Steps – what needed to happen before we
could plant:
o Railroad ties needed to be built-up
o Needed Soil/Compost delivered
o Needed to confer with sprinkler team in
order to direct sprinklers to the garden
o List of materials for planting day
o What we could plant
 Date to shopping for materials and seeds – July
14th
Building # 303 South Side of the building
July 8, 2010
Met with Sprinkler team to redirect sprinklers
Received additional contributions from Chris and Charlie in
the neighborhood: Cayenne Peppers, Habanera peppers
Cucumbers and Deb Gallant from North Boulder gifted East side (front)
Thai Mint, Cat Mint and Bog Mint as well as blue bells. of Building # 303
Marlene and Heidi planted tomato plants in the upper
existing beds donated by Boulder Housing Partners;
Cherry and Beefsteak Tomatoes (6 plants)
July13, 2010
Met with BHP Maintenance to discuss boarders and
structure of beds and planted plants from donations on
the north side of building 303.
July14, 2010
Shopping Day- Heidi, JoOnna and Bryant went to
McGukins to purchase shovels, spades, rakes, fencing and
seeds
July 17, 2010
Seven of us Started at 9:00 AM cleaning out the remaining
weeds and grass from the beds and went about planning
the location of each plant.
