1. PURPOSE:
Sampling operation is to secure, in a suitable container, a sufficient amount of
hydrocarbon fluid under pressure having the same composition as the stream being
sampled.
It is important that accurate and representative samples are collected for analysis since
that analysis, regardless of the care and accuracy of the laboratory test, may be useless
if the samples are not valid.

2. SCOPE:
This procedure covers the scope for obtaining representative samples of liquefied
petroleum gases such as propane, butane or their mixtures in suitable containers.
These procedures are considered adequate for obtaining representative samples for all
routine tests for LP gases required by specification D 1835 except analysis by test
method D 2163. They are not intended for obtaining samples to be used for
compositional analysis. A sample procedure that avoids changes in composition must
be used for compositional analysis.
Practice D 3700 describes a recommended method for obtaining a representative
sample of hydrocarbon fluid and the subsequent preparation of that sample for
laboratory analysis.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES:

Plant Manager is overall responsible to maintain this documented procedure for safe
sampling.
The Lab Chemist is responsible to ensure compliance of this procedure.

4. PROCEDURE:
PPEs REQUIRED
 Helmet, Safety Shoes, Goggles, Leather Gloves
PURGING SAMPLING CONTAINER)
 Connect the ends of the transfer line securely to the product source and to the inlet
valve of the sampling container. Sampling container should be in upright position
and sample collection source should be from bottom.
 Close the outlet valve (Top) & purge valve and inlet valve of sampling container.
 Open valve of sample source and then the outlet valve (Top) & inlet valve of
sampling container.
 Fill sample container until liquid issues from outlet valve (top) of sampling container.
 Close outlet V/V & inlet V/V of sampling container and the close sample source V/V.

 Loosen the connection joining the sampling container to the sample line and turn
container through 180° such that inlet valve of sampling container is at the top. Open
inlet valve & outlet valve of sampling container & drain out liquid.
 Return the sampling container to at original position such as outlet V/V is at the top.
 Tighten connections to sample transfer line and repeat the purging operation at
least three times.

TRANSFER OF SAMPLE

 Position the sampling container securely in an up right position with out valve at the
top & both inlet & outlet valves closed.
 Close vent valve & open sample source valve, inlet valve of sampling container and
fill container with the sample.
 Close inlet valve of container & the valve at the product source.
 Open vent valve. After the pressure is fully reduced, disconnect the sample
container from the transfer line.
 Discard the sample if a leak is develops or if either valve is opened during
subsequent handling of the sample container before performing the outage
operations.

(OUTAGE OPERATIONS)

 Immediately after obtaining the sample, place the container in an up right position
with the outage tube at the top.
 Open outlet valve slightly. Allow excess liquid to escape and close the valve at first
sign of vapor. If no liquid escapes, discard the sample and refill the container.

(CHECKING FOR LEAKS)

 After eliminating the excess liquid so that only 80 % of the sample remains. Immerse
in a water bath & check for leaks. If a leak is detected at any time during the
sampling operation, discard the sample. Repair or replace the leaky container before
obtaining another sample.

(CARE OF SAMPLES)

 Place samples in a cool location as soon as possible. Keep them there until all tests
have been completed. Discard any samples in containers which develop leaks.
Protect the valves in containers, either by packing the container in a crate in an
approved manner or by using a protective cap, so that accidental unseating of the
valve or tempering with it is avoided
