TERM DEFINITION
LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS
1. PURPOSE:
RVP test method determines the gauge vapor pressure of petroleum commodities particularly of
light products like LPG, Gasoline, NGL and Crude oil. Determination of vapor pressure is
important for safety reasons to ensure that the maximum operating design pressures of storage
& handling will not be exceed under normal operating temperature conditions.
2. SCOPE:
This test method covers the determination of gauge vapor pressure of petroleum products as
per ASTM D-1267-89.
Plant Manager & shift in charge is overall responsible to maintain this documented
procedure for analysis.
The lab chemist is responsible to follow guidelines given in procedure.
4. PROCEDURE:
1) Before to proceed for the determination of RVP, it is to ensure that the bath is filled with
water to desired level.
2) Energize the heater & stirrer of bath to maintain the temperature of water at 100F.
3) Take sample in lower chamber as per outlines given in ASTM D-1267 and connect with
upper chamber, then hang / immerse this assembly in water bath maintained at temperature
of 100F.
4) Observe the gauge pressure at equilibrium when RVP apparatus is at same temperature as
of water and report after correcting gauge error, if exist and correcting to a standard
barometric pressure as per guide lines given in ASTM test method.
5) Maintain the log of RVP reading in registers for log of results of miscellaneous samples.
4.2 INSTRUCTIONS FOR DETERMINATION OF RVP:
1) Pressure gauge which is the part of RVP apparatus to be checked for accuracy. Its
calibration to be carried out at two months interval / on when inaccuracy is suspected.
2) Temperature of water to be maintained at 100F before to immerse the RVP apparatus.
3) Guide lines as established in ASTM standard for sample filling in lower chamber need to
follow.
4) Before to observe the reading of gauge, it is to ensure that the temperature of RVP
assembly is same as of water bath.
5) Before reporting, convert the observed gauge vapor pressure to a standard barometric
pressure of 760 mmHg by using the equation given in ASTM D-1267.
1) ASTM D 2163-91
