Conversion between Two Port Parameters -

GATE Study Material in PDF

In the previous article we have seen about two port parameters for standard networks.
In this article we will see the conversion from one two-port parameter to the other two-
port parameters. They are impedance parameters (Z), admittance parameters (Y),
transmission parameters (A B C D), inverse transmission parameters (A’, B’, C’, D’), h –
parameters and inverse h- parameters (g-parameters). This Conversion between
Two Port Parameters is an important topic in Network Theory.

These free GATE 2018 Notes are useful from the point of view of GATE EC, GATE
EE, BSNL, BARC, DRDO, IES and other exams. You can also have these study notes
downloaded in PDF so that your GATE preparation is made easy so that you can ace
the GATE exam. Before you get to this article though, get reading up on the basic
concepts covered in previous articles.

Conversion of One Parameter to Other Parameters

If we go by standard method for this conversion it will take lot of time. The formulae
given below are very useful for conversion between one parameter to other parameter.

i. [Z] = [Y]-1

−1
A B A′ B′
𝐢𝐢. [ ]=[ ′ ]
C D C D′

h11 h12 g11 g12 −1

𝐢𝐢𝐢. [ ] = [g g 22 ]
h21 h22 21

Z ΔZ 1 Z
𝐢𝐯. A = Z11 ; B = Z ; C=Z ; D = Z22
21 21 21 21

−Y22 −1 −ΔY −Y11

𝐯. A = ; B=Y ;C = ; D=
Y21 21 Y21 Y21
ΔZ Z −Z21 1
𝐯𝐢. h11 = Z ; h12 = Z12 ; h21 = ; h22 = Z
22 22 Z22 22

1 −Y12 Y ΔY
𝐯𝐢𝐢. h11 = Y ; h12 = h21 = Y21 ; h22 = Y
11 Y11 11 11

Example:

Find the h – parameters of the network show below.

Solution:

We know for the T – network the impedance parameters are given as,

ZA + ZC ZC 3 2
Z=[ ]=[ ]
ZC ZB + ZC 2 3

ΔZ 9−4 5
∴ h11 = Z = =3
22 3

Z 2
h12 = Z12 = 3
22

−Z21 −2
h21 = =
Z22 3

1 1
h22 = Z = 3
22

5 2
3 3
∴h= [−2 1]
3 3

Note:

i. In series type connection Z parameters are getting added.

ii. In parallel type connection Y parameters are getting added.
iii. In cascaded type connection ABCD parameters are getting multiplied.
iv. In series – parallel type connection h - parameters are getting added.
v. In parallel – series type connection g - parameters are getting added.

With this we have finished our discussion about two port networks and in the next
article we will see some important points about frequency response and network
synthesis.
