PRESIDENT OF THE HOLY SYNOD OF THE G.O. CHURCH
SAINT MATTHEW, ARCHBISHOP OF ATHENS
THE CONFESSOR & WONDER- WORKER (1861- + 1950)
A MIRACLE OF ST MATTHEW OF ATHENS

Nun Irene, member of the sisterhood of the

Monastery of the Mother of God in Keratea-
Attica, was praying to the Holy Father Matthew to
inform her what happened to the Bishop of Corinth
Callistos, who that year (1977) had left the Church
and he had acceded in the schism of the Florinites.
After some days, Orthodox people, from various
places of Greece and from other countries, started
calling her and they were asking to speak to the
Nun Iren. Without they had known her, and
without they knew each other, as the Council of the
Nuns of the Monastery ascertained because of so
many telephone calls, all people were telling to her
the same vision:
They had seen the Monastery of the Holy
Archangels in Corinth (of the fallen Callistos) and
the Holy Archangels to come out from the roof
(dome) of the Church, abandoned those who
followed him to the schism! Moreover, Holy Father
Matthew asked them to call Nun Irene and to
inform her about!

(Confession of Mrs. Angeliki Karagiannis, worshiper

of the Monastery of Theotokos in Keratea, Attica)

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert

to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty
days and forty nights, he was hungry. The
tempter came to him and said, "If you are the
Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not
live on bread alone, but on every word that
comes from the mouth of God.' " Then the
devil left him, and angels came and attended
him.

THEY INNOVATE
EVEN THE HOLY FAST

The New Calendarists- Ecumenists, despite the

teaching of the Church, they want a decision of
their "Great Pan-Orthodox Synod" to abolish
and the Holy Fasting.

After Masonic Congress in 1923 in

Constantinople, where it was decided to cut
Fasting, since this issue has first place in ... the
conferences. Satanic and opposite-to-God
inspiration and perseverance.

(2nd Stasis of

TO EVERYONE OF THE CHILDRENS
OF THE MOST HOLY MOTHER CHURCH
You revered priests, you monastic orders of the Church, you
pious Faithful, beloved kids by the Lord!
Grace, peace and blessings of God and our Savior Jesus Christ
to all of you in the new year 1986 on the part of the Holy Synod
and Our wish and blessing, so more to love the angelic virtue of
fasting, whereby the earthly man acquires angelic state and
becomes heavenly man.
Beloved children. Whatever was received and adopted by our
Mother Church stems from the words and deeds of the Lord
and Saviour Jesus Christ. And the holy institution of Fasting
was not delivered only to the Protoplasts and not only Moses
and Elijah fasted 40 days or the Professor of desert, Holy
Forerunner, throughout his life, but especially He fasted, who
did not need fasting, the God-man Jesus, our Lord.
Behold, beloved children in the Lord, although the institution of
Fasting ripped from Adam, the divine institution of fasting is
kept and delivered to the Church by the new Adam, our Lord
Jesus Christ, Who Himself and the media leaves His Church
after first He fasted forty days and nights. Before teaching his
disciples, that "this genus (of demons) does not come out except
by prayer and fasting" He fasted and defeated the triple Lord's
temptation in the Mount of Jericho which was led "by the
Spirit" after the Baptism in the Jordan.
In the first temptation, the devil says to the Lord, Who had
already fasted 40 days: If you are really the son of God, as I
heard in the Jordan, tell these stones become bread.
The Lord defeated this temptation by answering: Man does not
live only by eating bread, but by every Word of God, which will
come out of the mouth of God.
In the second temptation, as we are taught by the Evangelist
Luke, the devil brought the Lord in the upper part of the roof of
the temple and said to him: If you are really the Son of God,
throw down yourself as says the psalm, God will instruct Angels
to run to keep you on their hands, so that you will not hurt. The
Lord answered: You will not present a risk to yourself to try
(the power of God) so if the Lord protect you, and won the
second temptation.
Then the devil goes to the third temptation. He upconverts the
Lord to a towering mountain and from there shows him all the
kingdoms of the earth and the glory. All this will be your gifts,
he says, if you fall down and worship me as your Lord. In this
word of the tempter, the Lord replied: "Go behind me Satan, it
is written in the Old Testament, "and only the Lord your God
will kneel and worship."
Then the devil ashamed "crimped" to go away and behold
angels came and serve the Lord.
INTERPRETATIVE PERFORMANCE: Then Jesus was led by
the Holy Spirit to a higher part of the desert, to suffer
temptation as a man from the devil (and to defeat him entirely).
And he fasted forty consecutive days and nights, then (as man)
he starved. Then the devil, who has the task to mind people,
approached stealthily and said, "If you are the Son of God (as
the voice was heard from heaven in the Jordan to say), do a
miracle, say to become these stone to loaves, to eat. "Then the
devil (after the triple defeat) left Jesus and behold the angels of
God came close to Jesus and served him as a winner.

That is the foundation of the ecclesiastical institution of fasting,

but also the deeper meaning of this.
The Lord as God, had no need of fasting, but the God-man
Jesus fasted to teach us three things:
First, that the Lord led by the Holy Spirit to fast and to defeat
the Devil: "then says Jesus was led into the desert by the
Spirit”. And everyone who want to fast and to defeat the
temptations in the spiritual struggle, he must has the grace of
the Holy Spirit and to be pushed by It.

That's why the lukewarm believers and the unbelievers do not

fast, and when they hear about fasting afraid of it and because
they are naked from the grace of the Holy Spirit. No less bereft
of the Holy Spirit have not those clerics and theologians who not
only do not fast, but they also want to eliminate (to reduce, say
at the beginning) the holy Lents. The heretic Ecumenists
planning to adjusting Religious Orders on Fasting, according to
the requirements of the modern times.
Yes, the Fathers were taught by the Holy spirit, appointed on
the pattern of the Lord for the Lent, while those (the
ecumenists) driven by the devil, seeking a law to abolish Fasts.
Let fast brothers to be with us the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Second, we taught that the temptations are defeated, and shame

the devil, through the Holy Fasting, which (while) is fading the
body, but it lifts makes gigantic and brightens the soul. That, we
see and in the temptations of the Lord, and, himself, Lord
assures again his students that: "this genus is not output except
by prayer and fasting" (Matt. Q', 21)
Third, we confident that the Holy Fasting lowers from the sky
and brings near to the Faster the Holy Angels to serve the true
Christian, the son by the grace of God, in his struggle to acquire
the Christian virtues.
Brothers and beloved children in the Lord! The first Adam,
because he does not fast, lost himself, with the whole human
race. The New Adam, our Lord, fasting defeat the temptations
and He saved by the obeying the whole human race.
So whom will we become imitators? The first Adam, the earthy,
or the New, the heavenly, who fasted.

The imitators of the first Adam, behold today are earthy and
seek the abolition of fasting, and the true Fasters are heavenly
people and defeating the complex machinery of the devil.
Becoming imitators thus the Lord, let your love for the holy
fasting as it was loved by the Holy Apostles and the Holy
Fathers and as it is analyzed and presented in the pages of this
calendar and we always hear the words of the Lord: The genus
that does not emanate, but only with prayer and FASTING. "

BY THE HOLY SYNOD

Fervid wisher to the Lord
+ ARCHBISHOP OF ATHENS AND ALL OF GREECE
ANDREAS
THE FASTING IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

God having created the first man, He put him in the gladness
Paradise to work it and to guard. At the same time he instructed
Adam to benefit from the fruits of all the trees and only not to
eat from the fruit of a tree. If he breached this command, from
that day would lose his immortality and become longer mortal.

And the Lord God commanded the man , "You are free to eat
from any tree in the garden ; but of the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it
you shall die. (Genesis II 16- 17)
With this fasting Adam would remain immortal and with the
work of virtue, he would repay the purpose for which God
created him. He would be like God, he would become God by
grace.

That was the good of fasting that God ordained the first man.
The offense of fasting from protoplasts claimed not only the loss
of that Paradise, but also all the Divine gifts with which God
endowed the first man, and created him as "image and
likeness" (GEN. A' 26). Particularly it claimed the breach of
fasting, the death.

Let's hear anybody who contemns fasting or opponents such

that he notifies devil's work. The Lord "appointed", that means
he gave an express order "not to eat from it", which again
means "fast". He gave this command with great and terrible
penance (GEN B 17).

What said the treacherous devil to deceive the protoplasts? He

calumniated God (!), and protoplasts agreed to the slander! He
told them, you will not die when you stop fasting which God
appointed for you but you will also become like gods.

But the result of ablation of the first and the holy order, what
was it? What the devil did he say? Not of course, but as St. Paul
says (Rom. 5 Ch. 12)

For the infringement and the consequences of that fasting had

to become God a man, Who again handed over to the redeemed
by the Holy Fasting, by his own example as he first fasted.
THE FAST IN THE PROPHETS AND THE
PATRIARCHES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT

And after the fall of the

Protoplasts, the fast as a
means of catharsis and
purification, occurs as
a permanent and
continued institution
throughout the whole
Old Testament. The
Israelites had regular
fasts. They fasted before
great celebrations and divine
events or fasting after divine punishment (chastisement) to
benefit from the mercy of God (Exodus AL' 26 Judges K' 26
Esther D' 16 II Maccabeus XIII 12 Joel First 14 Isaiah 58' 3
Baruch First 5' Daniel 9' 3 etc.)

Not only that, but the Fast is already requested from the Old
Testament, to be accompanied with prayer and to keep pace
with the virtues of charity and justice: (Tobit XII, 8).

Large Faster was the Prophet Moses! The divine man has
established himself to talk face to face with God at Mount
Sinai, after "he whacked himself with forty-days fast"
"Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights
without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the
tablets the words of the covenant; the Ten Commandments".
(Exodus Chapter 34', 28)

Alongside to Moses (who

saw the vision of God)
standard of fasting in the
Old Testament is the
zealot Elias. He with
fasting so thin his flesh,
that claimed many
wonderful, especially to
see the Lord as " thin voice
and aura" (Kings III XIX 12).

As fasting standards for the Old Testament, we can mention

the fast of the residents of Nineveh (Prophet Jonah), like the
fast of three Children, who to not eat meat and to not drink
wine from the table of heathen Nebuchadnezzar, fasted by
eating only with the seeds of the earth (Daniel A 5-16).

Finally, we mention the best of fasting, which closes the Old

Testament, that is the Holy Forerunner, who not only
fasted, but acquired the angelic state, which is why the Lord
said to him, "Amen, I say to you, among those born of
women there has been none greater than John the Baptist"
(Matthew XI 11).
THE FASTING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

The Fast, which we saw in the Bible- Old Testament is

finished and receives the full meaning of the Lord himself.

The Lord, having no need for fasting, fasted forty days and
forty nights to let us eternal standard of fasting and to teach
that the believer is driven to fast, driven by the Grace of the
Holy Spirit, so that through this to strengthen, as a spiritual
person, and to be able to progress in spiritual struggles, to
defeat the opposing party of devil and to have next to the
struggle of spiritual perfection the Holy Angels.

The Lord in this case by fasting himself forty days, not only
He bestows holy Fast, but also He perfects and gives the true
meaning of fasting.

Both Prophets Moses and Elijah, fasted forty days, but the 40-
days fast of Lord is the mention directly and immediately to
the disobedience of Adam and the violation of the fast with all
those consequences.

The fast of Lord (as human) left the gold standard of fasting.
If the Lord (humanly) fasted before his work, He won the
triple temptation by fasting and prayer, wanted to teach us by
his own example of preparing us in fasting and prayer for any
major project.

In this case, the maximum of our projects is our salvation, is

the deification of the Christian. Along this way, it interpolates
the other party, the temptation, like against the Lord.
Although the temptation is defeated by Fasting and Prayer
and so the believer goes the spiritual struggle for spiritual and
moral perfection that is Divinity. The sidelining and the defeat
of the temptations and further spiritual progress is the
meaning of fasting delivered by the Lord.

Hence the eminently spiritual Liturgical book “Triodion”

states: "Come, as the Lord with fasting broke the enemy, and
we thus break the arrows and the ambush, saying everyone,
Go behind me Satan, whenever in future (the devil) give us
temptation. "

The Saint Basil the Great emphasizes that the Lord, the flesh
which hired for us, strengthened with the Fasting and thus
faced the attacks of the devil. He teaches us to do the same.
(About Fasting I' 9 PG, 31, 177).

St. John Chrysostom says again that the Lord endured forty
days of fasting, so he fought with the devil, leaving us all
underscore that we chaste by fasting to take this power and
thus we arrayed in the fight against the evil (Speech at Birth
10', 3 PG 53, 24).

Let us look at other evidence from the New Testament on the

Holy Fasting.

Again Lord Himself says, just before the sacrifice of

crucifixion and immediately after the Holy Transfiguration,
to His Disciples, who asked why they cannot overcome the
temptation, who tormented the possessed son: "this kind does
not come out except by prayer and fasting" (Matthew 17', 21)

Not only the Lord but also the Apostles were fasting at certain
times, as evidenced by the Acts of the Apostles (AA, 9).
Indeed, the Apostle Paul expressly states that in the Apostolic
period fasts were arranged: "I served, he says the Lord with
trouble and toil ... with fasting often" (II Corinthians XI 27).
St. John Chrysostom observes that Apostle Paul fasted when
he was in particular need of divine help. His hard Apostolic
work, which constantly was in need of divine assistance, did
the Apostle Paul to fasts several times.

Again in the Acts of the Holy Apostles, we see that all

Christians fasted. They had shared worship, preaching and
fasting (Acts XIII 2). St. John Chrysostom observes: "You see
how great thing is the fast? When they have to ordain, then
they fasted and they accepted the revelatory grace of the Holy
Spirit to elect apostles (Priests) to spread the Gospel."

Again in the Acts we immediately read: "Then having fasted

and prayed, they put them over their hands (as a blessing)
and let them go". (Acts of the Apostles chapter 13' 3)

Also in the First epistle to Corinthians (7’, 5) St. Paul teaches

the Christians the temperance to indulge with greater zeal
and attention to the fasting and the prayer.

Finally the 69th Apostolic Rule defines Fasts for all Christians
on Wednesday and on Friday and at the Holy Lent.

The Holy Apostolic Rule says exactly: "Whoever bishop or

presbyter, or deacon, or subdeacon, or reader, or chanter at
St. Lent does not fast, or on Wednesday and on Friday, is
being launched. If he is a layman, let him excommunicated."
THE FASTING ACCORDING TO
THE SAINTS FATHERS
The Fathers of the Church, as
imitators of the Holy Apostles,
who imitated our Lord, received
the Holy institution of Fasting
and they experienced it deeply.
From the great Hierarchs until
the big Fasters of the Desert,
the God-given Fasting was
inextricably linked after praying
to face the temptations and for
progress towards the spiritual
and virtuous life.

That is according to the Fathers

the Fasting is a divine
command, which springs from
the Holy Bible and particularly by himself the God-man Lord,
Who is the eternal model for the sacred institution of the
Fasting too.

Generally, the view and the teaching of the Fathers on the Holy
Fasting is based entirely on the meaning and the significance of
the 40-day fasting of our Lord.

The true Christian is driven to fasting by the Spirit, wins with it

the earthly man, through which the other party fights with the
temptations the Christian and so as victor against the
temptation, he continues with the fasting and with the prayer
and with the synergy of the Holy Angels the work of the virtues,
which lead him to the "likeness", that is, in perfection, in
deification.

The Fasting, according to the Holy Fathers, is not an end itself,

but a means that leads to the victory over the temptations to
work the virtues. Fasting without virtues is not Christian
fasting and it is inveighed harshly by the Fathers.

Saint John Chrysostom says: "As fasting, I do not mean the

(typical) that many do, but the exact fasting, abstaining not only
from food but also of sins". And St Basil the Great: "True
fasting, he says, is our alienation from evil (the sin) (PG 28, 260).
The victory over the sin gives the first meaning in fasting.

Saint Clement also says emphatically: "The Fasting is the

principle of food"! And he explains: As the food reserves in the
life our body and the utter lack of food leads to bodily death, so
we, as true Christians, he says, will fast from the secular, the
humic, to die for the world, that as dead men not be influenced
and so clean, eating the divine food, to cohabit with God.

According to Saint Clement, the fasting means the death of the

earthy man and the resurrection of the spiritual one, who lives
and increases by the divine, heavenly food, that is the divine
Grace, especially with the participation in the Chalice of life, the
divine Communion.
The Fathers criticize, as we have said, as vain the fasting, which
is limited only to the fasting of food. Saint Isidore of Pelousion
Mount says, that anyone who fasts only from food, he benefits in
nothing, without fasting with the other senses as well.

In Triodion, in this celestial book, which probably Angels wrote,

we read: "Let fast welcome fasting and pleasing to the Lord.
True fasting is the alienation of the evil, the temperance of the
language, the abstinence from the anger, the separation of the
desires. .. the bankruptcy of all these is true fasting and
welcome". Again in the same book: "Fast from the evil my soul,
poring in the divine love. Open the door to all the noble ideas".

The time of fasting is characterized in the same book (Triodion)

as "blessed time", "goodness", "nice" and "pleasant" the day
of fasting. The holy Fasting is characterized such as "the
mother of virtues," to be emphasized the relationship with the
other virtues, "fellow of the heaven," to indicate that it is
angelic virtue, divine and celestial, the "most cheerful of the
virtues" because with it is acquired the remaining virtues, the
believer is led to catharsis and the insight of the divine and he
tastes the real, heavenly joy. It is called still "the best of virtues"
and "Mother of wisdom".

From the infinite treasure of hymnology on the holy Fasting, we

will mention just one more small hymn of the Triodion, that is
very expressive and particularly it praises the fasting, which he
calls "the paternal relic, the admirable thing, the mother of
everybody who worships Despot Christ "(Triodion 1895) that is
traditional, divine and sacred relic that first was delivered by
our father Adam, but finest was surrendered by the new Adam,
our Lord and by all our Fathers! It names the fast as "money"
(useful thing) wonderful as it has maximum value as gold!

The hymn especially calls as the mother of all those who claimed
to worship sincerely the Despot Christ. It's true mother the
fasting, since this leads to the necrosis of the earthy man and to
the rebirth of the new, the spiritual, the heavenly man.

Finally we must emphasize the racing character of the fasting,

which is eminently again highlighted in the Triodion. The
Fasting is primarily "struggle", which take those who wish to
do spiritual sports (the virtues).

The entire Great Lent is characterized as stage of sports

competitions, in which Christians will enter to fight against
temptations, for the purification and especially for the conquest
of the virtues. "The stage of the virtues opened, those who wish
to work out, come to enter, starting the good fight of Fasting,"
"the time has come that begin the spiritual struggles, the victory
against the demons, the fully armed temperance".
