Extension of Surveillance Law: Voting 256


Y Y N N -164, the House approved a six-year
extension of Section 702 of the Foreign
Intelligence Surveillance Act, a key
government tool for detecting and preventing
foreign-based terrorist attacks on the United
States. A yes vote was to pass S 139.
Privacy Rights in Spy Law: Voting 183-233,
N N Y Y the House defeated an amendment to better
protect the privacy rights of innocent
Americans whose communications with
foreigners are inadvertently swept up in
collections under the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act (S 139, above).
Labor Rights on Tribal Lands: The House
Y Y N N voted, 239-173, to remove Indian
reservations from the jurisdiction of the
National Labor Relations Board. A yes vote
was to pass a bill (S 140) that would repeal
collective-bargaining rights now available to
at least 600,000 workers in tribal casinos.
Surveillance Law Debate: The Senate
Y Y voted, 68-27, to start debate on a House-
passed bill renewing Section 702 of the
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA),
which the government uses to counter
foreign-based terrorist attacks on America. A
yes vote was to advance S 139.

The House will take up financial deregulation and abortion bills in the
week of Jan. 15, while the Senate will debate an extension of the Foreign
Intelligence Surveillance Act. Both chambers will consider a stopgap
spending bill to keep the government from partially shutting down at
week’s end.
