ICAR-CIFA organises conference on Improving Income of

Farmers through Agriculture and Aquaculture

The National Conference “Improving Income of


Farmers through Agriculture and Aquaculture
through Development Interventions” was jointly
organised by Society of Krishi Vigyan, Punjab,
Association of Aquaculturists and ICAR-
Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture
from 5-7 January, 2018. The conference has six
technical sessions with lead and invited lectures,
oral and poster presentations on the topics of
innovation in agricultural development and
social studies, technology assessment, refinement and dissemination, climate change, organic
farming, natural resource management, agricultural enterprises and aquaculture.

The conference has registered participants of 167 from different 17 states of India. The
conference has a majority of 120 participants from 80 Krishi Vigyan Kendra‟s (KVK) of India.

The program was inaugurated by Mrs. Usha


Rani, IAS, Director General, National Institute
for Agricultural Extension Management
(MANAGE), Hyderabad. She stressed the
importance of the KVK and extension system of
the country in transfer of technologies to
increase the farmer‟s income. In reality the
technology is not reaching to the small and
marginal farmers. The success stories on
agriculture, aquaculture should reach the
farmers, she added. She also gave importance on information on quality seed, feed,, market
linkage, aqua clinics, sustainable and environment friendly aquaculture.

Dr A. K. Singh, DDG, (Agricultural Extension),


ICAR, New Delhi presided over the inaugural
session. He emphasized on technology
validation and transfer of technology to farmers.
He advised the KVKs to prepare district
agricultural plan and hand it over the district
administration for implementation. He also
advised to make efforts to upgrade farmers to
entrepreneur with business orientation.
Dr. Surendranath Pasupalak, Vice Chancellor,
OUAT, Bhubaneswar was the guest of honour
on this occasion. KVK is the
knowledge/resource center for animal
husbandry, fisheries, horticulture, crops and
farm machinery in the district.
Entrepreneurship development among farmers
and farm women need to be strengthened by
KVK. It is essential for doubling the income of
the farmers, he added.

Dr. W.S. Dhillon, ADG (Horticulture), ICAR,


New Delhi argued the „profit of the farmer‟
should double and not just doubling the income.
Dr. J. K. Sundaray, Director, ICAR-CIFA on his
welcome address spoke on the importance of
this conference in line with the present need of
increasing farmer‟s income. He stressed on the
communication gap of the innovation of KVK.
Dr. Manoj Sharma, National Organising
Secretary of the conference gave brief
information about the Society of Krishi Vigyan and the conference.

This national conference will serve as a


platform for the professionals working in
agriculture and aquaculture for devising
strategies for increasing income of farmers.
This conference was mooted by the Society of
Krishi Vigyan, Punjab dedicated for the
professionals of KVKs working in India
informed Dr
P N Ananth, Head, KVK, Khordha who is also
National Organising Secretary of the seminar.
The society has two journals reflecting the works of KVKs. This is first of its kind a national
conference organised by the Society of Krishi Vigyan at ICAR-CIFA largely benefitting the
KVKs of the country. Dr. P. Routray Principal Scientist and Secretary, Association of
Aquaculturists, Bhubaneswar proposed the vote of thanks.
