Project Documentation Report

Introduction: I am Ben
Walker and I was assigned to build
an affordable house on a 50’x125’ The site that my
house will be
site near Woodrow Wilson HS. I placed on: 304
Slaughter Ave.
am building my house on this site,
because it is a nice size, cheaper
than other locations, and very
convenient for schooling. The
architectural style that influenced
me the most when building my house was ranch-style, because they are cheaper
than modern architecture and easy to build.

To the left is the

blueprint of my
house on the site
as well as
surrounding
components and
adjacent
properties

Site Analysis: Upon observation, site components included a few trees at the
back and to the left as well as some bushes to the right. The surface slopes upwards
and has a narrow drainage canal on either side. A sidewalk runs along the front of
the property. The extreme temperatures for the area are 24°F and 98°F and
prevailing winds come from the south and
southwest. Although the sunrise will not be visible
in the living room due to blockage by an adjacent

and constraints
Potential noise issues would most likely come
from the street in front of the house, therefore
only a few windows are present there.

Site Plan: In order for the site to be suitable
for a house, I will remove all trees within the
boundary and any other components that may limit
working space. Once the house is built and the site is Site Plan is
cleared, there will be no unwanted components to composed of
the house,
limit mobility around the house as well as its looks. I driveway, and

site
door with small trees parallel to enhance the overall
view. I will also add a porch with a fireplace on the
side of my house to incorporate a small amount of
outdoor exposure since there is no room for a
backyard.

This is the site plan after

being completed in Revit.
The house location,
entryway and circle
driveway match the
original drawing

Floor Plan Analysis: Upon entrance, the hardwood floor can be seen, which
is present all throughout the house due to its high quality. The laundry room/utility
closet and the master bedroom with a master closet and bath are to the left and the
living room is opened up to the right. All bedrooms contain a bed, work desk,
television/stand, and dresser. The living room contains a dinner table, couch, and 3
arm chairs with a coffee table, all in front of a television for relax and entertainment.
As you keep walking down the main hallway, a door opens up to the outdoor porch
on the left, and the kitchen is opened up to the right. The outdoor porch contains a
few benches and a fireplace for relaxing and entertainment. The kitchen contains a
circular table with a television close by and countertops with other kitchen
appliances along the outer walls to provide extra leisure space. An island is also
included to enhance the view. As you approach the back of the house, two bedrooms
are on either side with a shared bathroom in between, and all three rooms are
accessible from the hallway. The bathrooms contain a bathtub, water closet, and
sink/cabinets. Overall, the floor plan is very convenient for quick accessibility and
provides more than enough living space for a general sized family.

My floor plan
shows all rooms
and
components of
my house that
give it its
uniqueness

Discussion of LEED Credits and Sustainable Design:
Sustainable design reduces the negative impact on the
environment and human health. Careful consideration is given to
water, energy, building materials, and solid waste. This is
important, because it serves to make sure a structure is eco-
The Area friendly as well as safe to live in. The LEED program was created
Plan shows
the cubicle-
by the USGBC and served to provide guidelines for professionals
like rooms to improve the quality of our buildings and their impact on the
and unique
design environment. Two LEED credits I would want to apply for include
SS (Sustainable Site) and ID (Innovation in Design), because I built
a house on a certain site innovated by nothing but imagination.
Components of my house such as the side porch and cubicle-like
structure are original designs and could possible qualify me for
LEED certification.

Discussion of Universal Design: One
principle of Universal design that my project
meets is Equitable Use. My house has no stairs Open rooms
and halls
whatsoever, therefore is very convenient to allow for
disabled people/people in wheelchairs. easy
movement
Everything in my house is accessible from the for the
disabled
position that a person in a wheelchair is in, so
it is a suitable home for the disabled. Another
principle of Universal Design that my project
meets is Simple And Intuitive Use. Everything
in my house is noncomplex and very organized
so that no inhabitants have any problems
trying to use any components in the house. Overall, Universal Design requirements
are a positive for residential design.

Foundation and Foundation Cost: The foundation
for my house has the dimensions: 40’x90’x6”,
therefore I will need 1800ft^2 or 67yd^2 of
This is my work
concrete in order to create the correct sized
for calculating concrete pad. The total cost of my foundation with
the concrete
pad cost with a rebar included was $8,315.86. I chose the concrete
to-scale
drawing of my
pad foundation, because the extra concrete walls or
house columns aren’t needed for a house in the hot
climate of Texas and my house has no basement.
The hardest part about calculating the total cost
was finding the correct amount of rebar. Some
considerations a client would have to take into
account would be building on top of an uneven,
partly elevated surface. Costs such as filling in the low elevation spots with concrete
and building 9over the high elevation spots are not included into the calculation.

Transmission Load Calculations: The transmission load for my house is
relatively high for its size, due to the high count of windows and large size. The total
transmission load added up to 16,972.04 BTU/h. The windows accounted for the
most heat loss/gain at 7,171.58 since I have 20 total and they are very thin,
therefore heat can escape and enter easily. It is important to calculate transmission
load to see whether your house is energy efficient or not, which is very important in
a design process. Adjacent properties could limit sun exposure, therefore being a
beneficial factor in lowering total transmission load at certain times of the day. In
order to find the total transmission load, the formula: Q’=AUT is used; or the area, U-
factor and temperature differential for each outer structure are multiplied, then all
added up at the end.

My transmission load
calculations helped
determine whether
my house is energy
efficient or not

Conclusions: In this project, I utilized my limited Revit skills to build the best
house possible under a few hefty constraints, such as size and time. In my opinion, I
built a suitable house that is both affordable and perfect sized for the assigned site,
therefore I’d consider it as a success overall. My finished product closely resembles
many houses in the Dallas area, therefore it doesn’t stand out as weird looking.
However, many improvements could’ve been made, such as adding more floors and
more components to really bring out the house’s uniqueness. My house may not be
very energy efficient, but it is very cost efficient.
