Odisha raises VAT on petrol and diesel by 3%
The Odisha government increased the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel by 3%
each, making the fuel dearer.
• The finance department issued a notification stating that the VAT on petrol and diesel would
be 26% from earlier rate of 23%.

First list of 20 smart cities publicized with Bhubaneswar on Top


Bhubaneswar capital city of Odisha has outpaced all other rivalry cities of the nation by clinching
the top rank in Smart Cities contest, which had received proposals for 97 cities from state
governments.

Akash missile successfully test fired at Chandipuri in Odisha


Akash the medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile was successfully test fired from
complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipuri in Odisha.
About the Missile
• Akash was developed by the Defense Research and Development
Organization(DRDO), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for Missile Systems, Ordnance
Factories Board and Bharat Electronics (BEL) for other Systems in India.

Former minister and freedom fighter Maheswar Baug died


Former minister and freedom fighter Maheswar Baug passed away due to brief illness at the
district headquarter hospital in Odisha. He was 85.
• He was minister for works and health during chief ministership of Nilamani
Routray in 1977.
• He was twice elected as the Member of Legislative Assembly from Basta
constituency in Balasore district, Odisha in 1961 and 1977.
He was associated in many social organizations all along his life and was inspired by Ram
Manohar Lohia.

After 3 years of ban, Odisha government has lifted the restrictions on visit of foreign tourists to
certain tribal areas in the State, which was imposed due to the abduction of two Italian
tourists in Kandhamal district by Maoists.
Highlights of the revised guidelines:
• Foreign tourists have been asked to pay respect to the culture and tradition of tribals.
• The tourists will have to submit their proposed itinerary to the police superintendents of
the concerned districts.
• The foreign tourists have been asked to take photographs only with the consent of the
tribals.

National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) at Bhubaneswar, Odisha

NaMo inaugurated IOC’s Paradip Oil Refinery


PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 15 million tonne per annum Indian Oil Corporation
refinery at Paradip, Odisha.
• It is IOC’s 11th refinery that will be instigated with a capacity of 15 MMTPA.
• Refinery Cost – Rs 34,555 crore
Features of Paradip Oil Refinery:
• It has been designed to process broad basket of crude including dirty and cheaper
high Sulphur heavy crudes from Latin America.

Odisha CM, Naveen patnaik has been elected as the president of Biju Janata Dhal for the

Five health care ATMs have come up in four states


Five Healthcare ATMs have come up in four states that dispense Medicines based on a
prescription unless they refer the patient to a doctor.
• Five Medicine ATMS will come in Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and
Andhra Pradesh under a health Ministry pilot that merges telemedicine with a basic
free drugs programme.
Any Time Medicine:These Medicine ATMs will be handled by a multipurpose public health
worker (MPHW) or an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) equipped with a multi-parameter patient
vital monitor to check the basic health parameters.

Google extends free internet service through WiFi to 10 railway stations


Search Engine Google’s free WiFi service now extended to 10 railway stations as a part of its
tie up with Railtel. The formal launch will be started in Bhubaneswar.

• Pune, Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Ranchi, Raipur, Vijayawada, Kacheguda (Hyderabad),

Odisha CM inaugurate 100 rural drinking water projects


Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugrated 100 piped water supply projects on Utkala
Gaurav Madhusudan Das birthday for rural areas and pledged to make piped water provision in all
gram panchayats by 2017.
• The project is made at an estimated cost of Rs 72 crore, will help as many as 1,
72,000 people residing in rural areas.
• Earlier the government had inaugurated 100 urban drinking water supply projects
for 41 urban local bodies of 20 districts in Odisha.

City Limited, India’s first SPV on smart city, started operations


Bhubaneswar which came at the top of the first batch of 20 sAprt cities selected by the

Odisha Skill Development Authority becomes operational
The Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced Odisha Skill Development Authority, Which
will become operational from May 1.
(i) The programme will be headed by IT entrepreneur Subroto Bagchi.
(ii) The new iniative will guide, implement, coordinate and oversee all skill development
Programmes also to ensure quality skill training standards and sustained employability of
trained youths.
(iii) The programme head will be accorded the rank of a Cabinet Minister in the state and draw
a salary of only Re 1 a year for his service.
Subroto Bagchi:
• Bagchi was born at Patnagarh in Bolangir and studied in Utkal University.
He started his career working in industries department in the Odisha government and went on to
become a globally renowned IT entrepreneur

Centre approves Odisha’s proposal to set up Kalinganagar National Investment and


Manufacturing Zone
i. Union government has approved the Odisha Government’s proposal to set up Kalinganagar
National Investment and Manufacturing Zone project as part of Ease of Doing Business
inJajpur district.
ii. The proposed Manufacturing Zone will be a mega industrial zone sprawling of 163 square

kilometer having a world-class township to cater to the needs of the investors.


iii. The project is likely to attract 1 lakh crore rupees investment and generate 1 lakh 50

iv. Odisha government also committed to providing 24×7 power, dedicated industrial feeder and
quality physical infrastructure and common facilities for the project.

Odisha to launch Green Passage Scheme for orphan students


i. The Odisha government has coined a special scheme named Green Passage for orphan
students. This proposed scheme will function under the Higher Education Department.
ii. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik asked all government and private universities to
implement the plan. Of this 16,382 orphans are currently pursing higher studies in 272
institutions in the State.
iii. This scheme eases the onus on the orphan students due to pressure of fees as admission fees,
examination fees and tuition fees for pursuing higher education. They will also be provided free
hostel facilities and food.

Odisha govt to establish 100 more model schools & Odisha govt constructs 10 lakh
pucca houses in two years
i. Odisha government to build 100 model schools in addition to the existing similar number of
schools functioning in in backward areas of the state on a priority basis during 2016-17 fiscal.
ii. These Model Schools with an estimation amount of over 536 crore rupees during 2016-17.
The Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangathan is assigned the job of establishing Model Schools.
Odisha Government constructed 10 lakh houses:
• In past two years the state government has also constructed 10 lakh pucca houses under
various rural housing schemes. The government pledged to construct 16 lakh more houses in
the next three years• Under the Indira Awas Yojana, the share of Odisha was 32 % in the
houses built in the whole country during the 2015-16 fiscal.

Sulabh group to set up ‘hybrid toilet complexes’ in 9 Odisha cities


i. The Odisha government signed a MoU with Sulabh International Social Service Organisation
(SISSO) for construction and maintenance of hybrid toiletcomplexes in its nine cities.
ii. The hybrid toilet complexes having 5,957 seats will come up in urban centres such as
Bhubaneswar, and other cities which covered under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban
Transformation (AMRUT) yojna.

Hybrid Toilets:
♦ These toilets are unique as they need only 300ml of water to flush out slush as compared to 10
to 15 litres required in a standard loo.

Odisha Government launches DBT scheme for farmers


i. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the Direct Benefit Transfer scheme for
farmers and pledged digging of at least one lakh bore wells to improve irrigation facilities.
ii. On behalf this move famers will get themselves registered online to purchase seeds and get
the subsidy amount in their bank accounts directly of the state.
iii. The first beneficiary of the DBT scheme was Ramesh Rout of Laxminarayanpur area. The
seeds subsidy amount was deposited in Rout’s bank account.

India successfully test fires its indigenously developed Prithvi-II missile


i. India has successfully blasted off its indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile
as part of a user trial by the army from a launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at
Chandipur in Odisha.
ii. The Missile have a strike range of 350 km alsocapable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of
warheads and is thrusted by liquid propulsion twin engines also nine-metre-tall. It uses
advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory to hit its target.
iii. DRDO developed Prithvi is India’s first indigenously-built ballistic missile. It is one of the five
missiles under the country’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

Centre approves proposal for Greenfield Electronic Park in Odisha


i. Union Government gave its final approval for setting up of a Greenfield Electronic Parkwhich
is a dedicated IT hub near Bhubaneswar.
ii. The park, to be set up under Electronic Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) scheme of the Centre,
will come up on 203 acres of land at a cost of Rs 205 crore out of this centre will give Rs 95
crore with the rest will borne by the Odisha government.
iii. The park intends to provide employment potential of 10,000 to 12,000 persons and
common facilities for training, incubation and R & D activities to the interested
entrepreneurs.

Odisha State Government decided to provide education loan at 1% interest


Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik initiated a new Scheme called as “Kalinga Siksha
Sathi Yojana” to afford education loan at 1% interest to students for pursuing higher studies
Fund requirement: Rs. 500 Crore
Purpose: To help for students pursuing higher education including Management, Law,
Engineering and Medicine
Aim: Ensuring that meritorious students do not stop enrolling for higher education due to financial
stress.

Veteran Odia actress Manimala Devi passes away


i. Veteran Odia film actress Manimala Devi passed away after prolonged illness in at
Bhubaneswar, Odisha. She was 86 year old.
ii. The Odisha hailed actress began her career as a child artiste in Annapurna Group B and went
on to perform in at least 100 plays.
iii. In her long and illustrious career she starred over 40 feature films of which 14 films have
bagged the national award, including her debut film Sri Loknath.
iv. She was honoured with the prestigious Jayadev Purashkar which is the state’s highest cine
award in 2000.

Odisha govt forms judicial panel for reforms in Jagannath temple management
i. Odisha government set up a one-member judicial commission to make reforms in the
management of the Lord Jagannath temple in Puri.
ii. Former High Court Justice Bimal Prasad Das will be the head of the commission and assisted
by former chief administrator of Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Mahimohan Tripathy.
iii. The commission was formed demanding suggestions on well-organized rituals, darshan of
deities, security arrangements, training and conservation of heritage and culture in the temple.

World famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath begins at Puri


i. This is the only time in the entire year that the devotees will see Lord Jagannath leaving the
Puri Jagannath temple with his brother Balram and sister Subhadra. Devotees from all over
gather in Puri, Odisha for the annual Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra, which begun on july 6th
ii. They visit their aunt for nine days and are taken in a procession which what the Hindu festival
is all about.
iii. The Rath Yatra marks their journey from and to their aunt’s house at Shri Gundicha Temple.
iv. The deities and Sudarshan Chakra or celestial wheel are taken out from the temple on
their chariots or Rath – from where it gets the name Rath Yatra
v. The Puri Jagannath Yatra is also known by variety of other names like Gundicha Jatra,
Navadina Jatra, Dasavatara Jatra and Ghosa Jatra among others.

Centre to organise ‘Make in India’ conference in Bhubaneswar


i. Union government is set to host the Make in India Conference in the Odisha’s Capital
Bhubaneswar in the month of December this year.
ii. The Commerce Ministry controlled Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion is organising
the mega event to attract the investors to invest in the State

Sudarsan Pattnaik creating 100 sand raths for new world record
i. Odisha’s Eminent Sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik is making an attempt another world record
by carving 100 sand chariots at the Puri beach in Odisha on upcoming Ratha Yatra of Lord
Jagannath.
ii. Apart from having darshan of the idols of Lord Balabhadra, Lord Jagannath and Devi Subhadra
on the giant wooden chariots, pilgrims will get a glimpse of the sand art during the nine-day
festival.
iii. Twenty-five students and Sudarsan worked on the 100 chariots using 800 bags of sand also
the team had worked about 20 hours in three days.

Double Dhamaka Prize Money( $40,000) for UNESCO KALINGA PRIZE


i. The Odisha government has decided to double the prize money of Unesco Kalinga Prize-
2017 to $40,000
ii. The Kalinga Prize was established in 1951 by United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) with a generous grant from Biju Patnaik, the founder-president of
the Kalinga Foundation Trust.
iii. The Kalinga Prize is given to a person(s) who make outstanding contribution to the
interpretation of science and technology to the general public
iv. Following a proposal of the Union Ministry of Science and Technology, the increase in the prize
money was approved at a meeting chaired by Odisha Science and Technology Minister Pradeep
Kumar Panigrahi.
v. It is noted that Argentinian scientist Diego Andres Golombek received the UNESCO
Kalinga Prize 2015

Warden posts
The Odisha government has initiated the process of recruiting transgender people as prison
wardens in order to impart a social boom in their abandoned life style.
i. In accordance with a Supreme Court directive on transgender, the Odisha government has
decided to recruit them as jail warders following the Odisha Subordinate Staff Selection
Commission (OSSSC).
ii. As per the Directorate of Prison guidelines, transgender community members can apply
for 185 warders posts in jails.

Odisha opens 100 new multi-purpose calamity shelter units


i. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik opened 100 multi-purpose shelter houses to the
people of Odisha for use during natural calamities like floods and cyclones.
ii. The move by the state government is keeping an eye on the super cyclone in 1999, that
devasted the state to the worst crisis.

Language (Amendment Act), 2016, which was published in the Odisha Gazette in May this year.
iii. The cabinet also approved a proposal to set up a unitary Odia Language and Literature
University in Bhubaneswar.

Odia becomes the Official Language of the Odisha Government


i. On a final breath, Odia will be used as the official language in all transactions of the Odisha
government from August 16, 2016.
ii. According to the amendment of the Orissa Official Language Act 1954, all government
letters, files will be carried in Odia language.
iii. A committee with the Chief Secretary as its chairperson has been formed to oversee
implementation of the use of Odia in all official business of the state government. The committee
will every six months take stock of the situation. A special division under the General
Administration department will oversee implementation of the use of Odia language in official
transactions of the state government.
iv. On the other hand, linguists have expressed doubts over the implementation of Odia as the
state’s official language. They have alleged that it was being implemented in haste.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik unveils Odisha Startup Policy for youths


i. The Odisha state cabinet headed by chief minister Naveen Patnaik approved the Odisha
startup policy to promote entrepreneurship among youths.
ii. The policy envisages ushering in an innovative start-up ecosystem through creation of world
class incubation centres,funding and supporting incentives structure at par with
other states. A Start-up Capital Infrastructure Fund (up to Rs 25 crore) would be provided
by the state government to the Department of MSME through budgetary provision.
iii. The state government would participate in private state specific funds for start-ups to set up
operations in the state, such as seed/VC funds, limited to 1/4th of the total size.
iv. Institutions like universities and colleges would be eligible for one time capital grant of 50
per cent of capital cost, excluding the cost of building, up to a maximum of Rs 1 crore to
set up an incubation facility.

AAI to host a Global Conference on Aluminum in Bubhaneshwar in February, 2017


i. Aluminium Association of India (AAI) would host the three-day global event from from
February 15 to 17, 2017 keeping in mind the emergence of bauxite-rich Odisha as the aluminium
capital of India.
ii. Aluminium Association of India (AAI) shall host the International Conference on Aluminium
(INCAL) in Bhubaneswar.
iii. With more than half the bauxite reserves of the country and gigantic presence of Nalco,

CTTC, Bhubaneswar signs pact with ISRO for Technology Transfer


i. Central Tool Room and Training Centre (CTTC), Bhubaneswar, has signed an agreement
with ISRO for technology transfer and a contract for supply of spacecraft component.
ii. As per the contract, the CTTC would supply spacecraft component for next five years for a total
value of Rs 32 RPT Rs 32 crore.

Odisha Govt. launches Baristha Bunakar Sahayata Yojana for aiding Weavers
Odisha State Government has launched a new scheme for elderly weavers in the state to mark
the National Handlooms Day. Named as “Baristha Bunakar Sahayata Yojana”, the scheme is
aimed at providing financial assistance to the elderly weavers in the state.
Under this scheme the state government would provide Rs 500 pension to the weavers, on
the occasion of National Handloom Day.
Financial Relief for Weavers in Odisha:-
• Odisha government has initiated several welfare schemes for the weaver community in
the state and increase the reach of handloom.
• There are about 8000 weavers in the state working in this field for more than 20
years to which the scheme will be extended.
• Under the Baristha Bunakar Sahayata Yojana, the weavers above the age of 60 years
will get an allowance of Rs. 500 per month while weavers above 80 years of age will
get Rs. 700 per month
The allowance amount will directly be deposited into the bank account of about 8000 beneficiary
weavers. The scheme will put an extra burden of 5 crore annually on the state government.

Odisha Cabinet accords in-principle approval to implementation of Kalinga Siksha Sathi


Yojna
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has accorded in-principal approval to a new education loan scheme
for poor meritorious students in the state. Named as “Kalinga Sikshya Sathi Yojana” the state
government will provide education loans at interest of just 1 percent per annum to the
poor students.
Objective of the scheme:
To ensure that the meritorious students from the poor families enroll into the higher studies. Until
now, many such students do not enroll into the higher studies due to lack of the funds, but
Kalinga Sikshya Sathi Yojana will ensure help to such students and their better future.
• The students wants to undergo higher studies in education, medical, engineering,
management, law and others can avail the education loan under the new scheme.
• The scheme will definitely reduce the burden of education loans and financial
stress on the poor households across the state.

• The state government has earmarked Rs. 500 crores for Kalinga Sikshya Sathi
Yojana from its own resources. The state government has dedicated this scheme to

was the Chief Secretary of Odisha during the tenure of former Chief Minister JB Pattnaik from
1995-1999.

i. Renowned Odia filmmaker, actor and director Gobind Tej died in a private hospital in
Bhubaneswar at the age of 88.

iii. Tej started his career in films ‘Kedar Gouri’ in 1954followed by many award winning films

Odisha Govt. launches construction workers pension scheme


i. Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik declared all registered construction workers above60
years of age will get pension of Rs 300 per month while workers above 80 years of age will
get pension of Rs 500 per month who registered for a minimum of five years
ii.Financial assistance for mothers has been increased from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 while seriously
ill workers are provided Rs 3 lakh.
iii.The state government has provided assistance of Rs 172 crore to 4 lakh construction workers
under different scheme.

India successfully test-fires surface-to-air missile ‘Barak-8’ off Odisha coast


i. India successfully test fired a new surface-to-air missile – ‘Barak-8’, from a defense base in
its eastern sate of Odisha, was reported by state-run broadcaster All India Radio (AIR).
ii. The missile was successfully launched. from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) launch pad
at Chandipur in Balasore district.
iii. The 4.5-meter missile weighs around 3 tons and can carry a payload of 70 kilograms. The
system also includes a Multi-Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MF STAR) for
detection, tracking and guidance of the missile.

i. Eminent Hindi and Urdu writer Reoti Saran Sharma died in New Delhi today. He was 92 .
ii. He penned memorable television serials like Phir Wahi Talaash and The Great Maratha.
iii. He was a Pioneer in radio plays in All India Radio . It broadcast more than 150 radio plays
written by him, some of which were translated into regional languages.
iv. Noted plays written by Sharma include ‘Na Dharam Na Iman’, ‘Deepshika’ and ‘Andehere ke

Drinking Water Projects :
The projects dedicated will cater to the needs of around 2 lakh people, the 100 proposed
schemes will ensure safe water for lakhs of people in urban areas in the coming days.
• The chief minister also laid the foundation stones for 100 more driking water projects at the
secretariat here through video conferencing.
• He also launched two new systems-Online Smart Water Information Management
(OSWIM) and e-Building Pass for ensuring better management of supply of drinking
water to the urban households and smoothen the permission process for construction of
buildings respectively.

Number Of Deaths Due To Encephalitis Rises To 54 In Odisha


i. The Japanese Encephalitis has killed over 150 children and taken epidemic proportions
in Malkangiri district due to negligence.
ii. At present, 29 children, afflicted with the disease are undergoing treatment at the district
headquarters hospital and four of them are in the ICU in a serious condition.

Union Cabinet gives ex-post facto approval to IISER in Odisha


i. Union Cabinet given its ex-post facto approval on October 27, 2016 to formation of the Indian
Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER) at Berhampur in Odisha under the
Societies Registration Act, 1860.
ii. The cabinet approved setting up and operationalisation of the institute in a transit/temporary
campus from academic year 2016-17 for initial three years (2016-19), involving a cost of Rs
152.79 crore.

National Seismic Programme(NSP) inaugurated in Odisha


i. Petroleum and Natural Gas minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the National Seismic
Programme(NSP) at Taranga in Baleswar district of Odisha.
ii. The NSP aimed to undertake a fresh appraisal in all sedimentary basins across India, especially
where no/scanty data is available, to have a better understanding of the hydrocarbon potential
of India.

i. Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik announced a new scheme ‘Madhubabu Aain Sahayata Sibir’to
provide legal assistance to the deprived sections of the society at the grassroots level in all its
6,812 gram panchayats across the state.
ii. The scheme was named after great Odia lawyer, ‘Madhubabu Aain Sahayata Sibir’
iii. It will offer legal services once a week. The advocate engaged for the legal assistance cell
will be paid an amount of 500 rupees fee per sitting to provide free legal advice to the people.

Railways, Odisha sign MoU for Cost Sharing of Nabarangpur, Malkangiri Rail Lines
i. Ministry of Railways signed MoU with Government of Odisha for cost sharing of two new
railway line projects.
ii. The Mou was signed in the presence of Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu
and Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik.
iii. Accoding to the MoU, Odisha will bear entire land cost and 50% cost of construction
of Jeyore- Nabarangpur (38) km, and 25% of total cost of Jeypore-Malkangiri(130 km) Rail
Line Projects.

‘Lost’ Chandrabhaga river found in Odisha


i. After the confirmation of existence of the mythical Saraswati river in India’s North-West,
scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur claim they have found evidence
of another ‘lost’ Indian river.
ii. The River Named Chandrabhaga, the ancient river is believed to have existed at a distance of
about 2 km from the 13th century Sun Temple at Konark, a Unesco World Heritage Site in Odisha.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik inaugurates inaugurates Tata Steel’s Gopalpur ferro-chrome

i. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurates the 55,000-tonne per annum (TPA) ferro-
chrome plant set up by Tata Steel at a cost of Rs 542 crore in its Gopalpur Industrial Park in
Ganjam district.
ii. The plant is a unique environment-friendlyunit with state-of-the-art pollution control
equipment and technology such as ETP(Effluent Treatment Plant) and STP(Sewage Treatment
Plant).
iii. It is the first plant in India to use briquetting method of chrome ore fine agglomeration

Odisha Signs Agreement To Set Up 4 More STPI Centres & Odisha To Get Gems
&Jewellery Industrial Park
i. Naveen Patnaik lead Odisha government signing an MoU with Software Technology Parks of
India (STPI) for setting up facilities at four more places. The agreement was signed to set up STPI
centres at Angul, Jajpur, Jeypore in Koraput and Sambalpur.
ii. Presently STPI centres aeloacted at Rourkela, Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and
Balasore. After this proposal Odisha would have the highest number of such centre in the
country.

India conducted Twin Trail of Prithvi-II missile in Odisha


A successful test firing of two nuclear capable Prithvi-IImedium-range ballistic missiles, was
conducted by the Indian Armed Forces on November 21, 2016, back-to-back in quick
succession, as part of training exercise, from a defence testcenter Chandipur in Odisha.
• The two surface-to-surface missiles were mounted on two Mobile Tatra Transporter-
erector Launchers (MTL) and launched from the launching complex-III (LC-III) of the
Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur.
• The first missile was fired at about 9.37 AM and the second one at 9.38 AM.Both the
medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBMs) have a strike range of around 350 km and a
tendency to carry about 500 kg to 1,000 kg of weapons.
• This was the first test fire in a range of three nuclear missile tests that have been lined
up in a row. Along with Prithvi-II, the other two missiles include the most sophisticated
Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor which is capable of destroying incoming enemy
missiles of more than 2,000 km range and the Agni-I with a 700 km range.
Agni-I and AAD interceptor will be launched from LC-IV in the Abdul Kalam Island in full
operational configuration on November 22 and November 23 respectively.

from 1995 to 2009 and was executive president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee

Odisha Governemnt Launches Malaria control programme DAMAN
i. The State Government of Odisha has decided to launch a new malaria control
programme, Durgama Anchalare Malaria Nirakaran (DAMAN), to control malaria in
inaccessible areas, with a total spending of 120 crore rupees for five years.
ii. The programme will be implemented in 8000 villages of all 79 blocks of eight high malaria
endemic southern districts – Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangapur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati,
Nuapada and Kandhamal with an annual expenditure of 24 crore rupees.
iii. These districts contributed around 60% cases and 56% death to the state malaria burden in
2015 – 16.

NALCO and NTPC Signs MoU to set Power Plant in Odisha


i. Central PSUs, National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco) and NTPC Limited signed a
MoU in New Delhi on December 16, 2017, to set up a 2400 MW (8x300 MW) power plant at
Gajmara in Dhenkanal district, Odisha.
ii. The pact was inked in the presence of Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Power

i. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on December 22, launched “Biju Sishu Surakshya
Yojana” for care and protection of HIV positive orphan children in the state.
Important aspects of the scheme
ii. Under the scheme, the children would get financial support from the state
government for their studies till higher secondary along with Rs. 20,000 reward after passing
higher secondary.
iii. State government would provide Rs. 7,000 to Rs 40,000 for technical education to the
beneficiary to meet the expenses like admission and tution fee, study material and other related
expenses

Odisha Names Mega Lift Irrigation Scheme after the freedom fighter Parbati Giri
i. The State Cabinet of Odisha on December 24 named the Mega Lift Irrigation Scheme worth
Rs. 7,600 crore, after the noted freedom fighter and social reformer Parbati Giri as a mark of
respect for her immense contribution to the freedom movement and service to the poor and
needy.
ii. The scheme was named after Parbati Giri by the Chief Minister of state, Naveen Patnaik at a
cabinet meeting.
iii. The State Cabinet has approved tender for 13 mega lift irrigation schemes with a total
command area of 19,400 hectares in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts.
iv.The Cabinet meeting approved the lowest bid of Rs. 517.77 crore by GVPR Engineers Limited.

Odisha CM Adds 25 Lakh new Beneficiaries under the Mamata Yojana


i. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, on December 22, addressed a meeting at the Jayadev Bhawan
to mark five years of completion of the Mamata Yojana.
ii. The state government added 25 lakh new beneficiaries under the Mamata Yojana
and electronically transferred Rs 1,100 crore to the bank accounts of these beneficiaries.
iii. The Chief Minister also announced a onetime incentive of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 for
Anganwadi workers, Anganwadi assistants and Asha workers respectively to promote the scheme.

Long range nuclear-capable subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay fails Test for fourth Time
i. India successfully test-fired its long range subsonic cruise missile, Nirbhay, from the launch
complex 3 of Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha coast at 11: 56 hours on
December 21, 2016.
ii. The state-of-the-art surface-to-surface missile is developed by the Defence Research and

Development Organisation.
iii. It was fourth test of Nirbhay missile and out of four, three have ended in failure. The maiden
launch was conducted in March 2013 but it was failure, the second test was conducted in October
2014 was a big success while the third mission on October 16, 2015 was again a failure.

DRDO successfully tests smart anti-airfield weapon SAAW


i. The Defence and Research Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully tested an
indigenous Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW) from an Indian Air Force aircraft on December
24, 2016.
ii. Weight: 120 kg, Range: 100km & Project Outlay: Rs.56.58 Cr
iii. The smart weapon is used to destroy runways, bunkers, aircraft hangers and other reinforced
structures. It is one of the world class weapons systems.
iv. The captive and release trials were tracked by radar and telemetry ground stations at the
Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha during the entire duration of the flight.

India Successfully Test-Fired ICBM Missile Agni V in Odisha


India successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable, Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM),
the Agni V, on December 26, from Dr Abdul Kalam island, formerly known as Wheeler Island,
off the coast of Odisha.
• The three-stage, solid propellant surface-to-surface missile was test-fired from a mobile
launcher from launch complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at 11:05 am in
Balasore district.
• This was the fourth and final test of the missile. With the success of the final development
test, Agni-V is now ready for the induction into the strategic arsenal (collection of weapons)
of India.
• The successful induction of Agni V will give India long-range strike capability.
