MCU In addition to your vaccine based

policy regarding the flu, what are
some of your other initiatives aimed at
providing services for student health?

MCU "To keep the Santa Rosa Junior College

community informed about influenza, the
Sonoma County Junior College District
takes steps to protect the health and
welfare of our college community, by
providing information, as we like to
say around here, knowing is half the
battle!"

MCU, new angle Could you tell us some more about the
flu? What is the flu? what are the
risks?

MS "People with the flu usually have

a fever for 2 - 5 days. This is
different than fever caused by other
upper-respiratory viruses, which
usually resolve after 24-48 hours.
Most people with the flu have fever and
muscle aches, and some people also have
cold-like symptoms (runny nose, sore
throat). Flu symptoms usually improve
over 2 - 5 days, although the illness
may last for a week or more. Weakness
and fatigue may persist for several
weeks."

MCU We hear that there is a contagious

period, after which the victim is no
longer a threat to others, is this
right? could you please comment on the
question of contagion?

MS "People infected with flu shed virus

and may be a danger to others from
1 day before getting sick to about
5-7 days after getting sick. This can
be longer in some people, especially
weak children and people with weakened
immune systems. This means that the
afflicted may be able to transfer the
disease to additional victims prior to
knowing they have become a carrier. If
you go down with the sickness, you must
avoid contact with others for 24 hours
after your fever is gone without the
use of fever reducing medicine."

MCU What would be your assessment of the

flu situation as regards SRJC health
safety and the legal right to remove
contaminated persons from the college
environment?

CU Flu is highly contagious through

airborne respiratory droplets. It is
the responsibility of faculty to ensure
a safe and healthy environment in the
classroom by dismissing the obviously
infected from the classroom the moment
flu or any other dangerous contagious
illness becomes apparent.

MS Thank your for you kind cooperation in

a distinct pleasure to meet a student
health services representative with
such definite opinions.
