Parametric representation of lines: Locating a point on a line,

3. Mathematical representation of solids:
Geometry and Topology, Comparison of wireframe, surface and
solid models, Properties of solid model, properties of representation

4. Geometric Transformations:
Homogeneous representation; Translation, Scaling, Reflection,

5. Finite Element Analysis:
Review of stress-strain relation and generalized Hooke's Law, Plane
stress and Plane strain conditions; Concept of Total Potential
Energy; Basic procedure for solving a problem using Finite Element
Analysis. 1-D Analysis: Concept of Shape function and natural
coordinates, strain - displacement matrix, derivation of stiffness
matrix for structural problems, properties of stiffness matrix. 1-D

thermal and fluid problems. Trusses and Beams: Formulation of
stiffness matrix, simple truss problems to find displacement,
reaction and stresses in truss members. Structural analysis using

Design based Problems (DP)/Open Ended Problem:


1. Design a structural component using conventional method, prepare a CAD model,
assemble it, synthesize it and perform FEA and compare results of conventional design.

Active learning assignments: Preparation of power-point slides, which include videos,


animations, pictures, graphics for better understanding theory and practical work – The faculty
will allocate chapters/ parts of chapters to groups of students so that the entire syllabus to be
covered. The power-point slides should be put up on the web-site of the College/ Institute, along
with the names of the students of the group, the name of the faculty, Department and College on
the first slide. The best three works should submit to GTU.
