There are two macro skills of language they are receptive and productive

skills. Writing is a communication that is included into the productive language

besides the speaking, therefore writing is very important so can be mastered by any

individual. In this fact the writing is very important for every human being can be

viewed from any schools that have taught their students about writing, whether it be

from junior high school, as well as in elementary high school and universities.

Writing is not only used in the delivery of ideas, but writing also can be used

as a communication tool who gives knowledge or news to the readers, such as

newspaper, magazines, and etc. That means between the writer and the reader has that

are closely relationship communication, and to keep a good relationship between the

reader and the writer, so every writer should have good writing skill too, this means

that the writing should also include the ability to really focus and in the preparation of

sentence patterns should also be organized.

Learning to write is a difficult task for students, because they do not have more

vocabulary to write, they are also afraid to make something error in grammar and they

are also be of the opinion writing is complex subject that involves organization of

thoughts, so many students have trouble in writing and say they can not write well or

confuse in generating idea to write.

The teacher as facilitator must use many ways in teaching and learning process

to make the students interest and increase their understanding about the lesson.

Taking movie as media, it would greatly for help in transferring materials in teaching

to teach how to write which good anyway, and the media will also generate interest,
and would be quick to understanding the material that is given. By using animation

movie as a media that can increase students writing ability in narrative text, because it

is good to get students’ idea in writing a paragraph or more.

On the basic of the problem in this paper, the writer interest to do research,

research is received.

Ho: animation movie as a media significally can effect to increase student’s writing

ability in narrative text in VIII Grade of SMPN 10 Takengon. So, the result of this

research is not received.

F. Review of Related Finding

Following is the previous study that taken as the comparison in this study:

1. Solikhatun (2011) “The Effectiveness of Using Fable Movies in Teaching

Narrative Text, (at SMA GITA BAHARI Semarang)”1

The problem in this research come from the translate concept in our brain to

be written language and the students must also be clever to choose and combine

the vocabulary, this is a difficult subject because the student must pay attention to

many things. There are two problems of study in this thesis; (a) to what extent is

the student ability in writing narrative text taught without using fable movies of

Semarang)(2011). p.i
the SMA GITA Bahari Semarang, and (b) to what extent is the students ability in

writing narrative text taught with using fable movies of the SMA GITA Bahari

Semarang. Based on the problem the purposes of study are : to find out the

students ability in writing narrative text taught with fable movies.

The methodology in this research is the writer use experiment approach,

with respondent on this research are the English teacher SMA GITA Semarang

and the second years student at SMA GITA Semarang.

The purpose of the study is to know using fable movies in teaching

narrative text to increase the students’ ability in writing ability at SMA GITA

Bahari Semarang.

2. Octa Veli Yeni (2011), “Learning Narrative Text Through Folktale Movie to

Improve Students Writing Skill (at STAI Gajah Putih Takengon)”.2

In this thesis the researcher told the students feel bored and consider that

writing activities all not interested and also difficult. There are two problems of

study in this thesis; (a) does learning narrative text through folktale movie to

improve students writing skill and (b) what are the students’ difficulties in

learning narrative text through folktale movie.

The methodology is quantitative approach and using experimental research,

the populations are students in fourth semester at STAI Gajah Putih Takengon.

Based on the result of research, learning Narrative through folktale movie can are

used the desire of students’ in writing and improve their writing skill, there are

some difficulties are fasted from students’ in writing it back to their basic skill.

There are similarities and differences between previous researches with this

research. For similarities, both of these research have purpose to increase students’

ability in writing. The differences between the previous researches with this

research are in using media. The previous research used folktale movie while this

research use animation movie in writing narrative text.

G. Terminology

1. Effectiveness

Effective is successful in producing a desired or intended result. 3 In this

research the writer mean effect is result which is producted by something, and in

this care, the effect mean the result research by animation movie in increasing

student writing ability.

2. Writing

Writing is the expression of ideas, the conveying of massage to the reader,

so the ideas should arguably be seen as the most important aspect of the writing.4

Writing is used to generate ideas to express some ideas from a topic, and then

become an essay complete and ready to read. Writing is an effective thing to do if

we want to mastery English.

3. Text

Text is the original words of something written or printed, as opposed to a

parapharse, translation, revision, or condensation.5 In this thesis the students write

a text or more after watching the movie.

4. Narrative Text

Narrative text is tells a story to make a point. It can be used in an anecdotal,

abbreviated way to introduce or illustrate a complicated subject or in an extended

way to provide a detailed, personal account of “what happened”. 6 An affective

narrative has a plot – a meaningful and dramatic sequence of action, which may or

may not follow the order in which events actually of action.

5. Animation Movie

Movie is a series of images that are projected into a screen to create the

illusion of motion.7 Furthermore, motion pictures are also called movies, film or

cinema, are one of the most popular forms of entertainment, that have people to

immerse themselves in an imaginary world for a short period of time. Animation

film is a simulation of movement created by displaying a series of pictures, or

frames.8 A movie is one of the visual aids that can be used in a writing class. It

makes lessons more fun. It can also be used to create situation for writing classes

more clearly, that the students have big enthusiasm in teaching learning process in

writing class.

6. Media

Media come from the word medium. It means all of them and the channel

used to inform of massage. 9 In the field of education media can be called as

instrument, method, and technique used to communicate and influence effectively

between the teacher and the students in the teaching and learning process in the

school.

In this study, the writer use animation movie as media of teaching writing.

In teaching writing narrative text, teachers should not give it separately, word by

word. It will make the students know the meaning of the words only and they still

find difficulties in applying the word into sentence or paragraph.

CHAPTER II

CONCEPTS AND THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

A. Writing

1. The Nature of Writing

Writing is social activity. Writing always involves making choices about

how the best to get one’s meanings across effectively particular readers by writing

in ways they will recognize and understand. Writing is also the most powerful tool

in the communications beside oral perpetually. Writing in so art life relationship,

when students learn, almost every lessoon is the writing as a means to permanent

reminder tool.

Writing is one of the most powerful communication tools you will use

today and for the rest of our life. 10 About the explanation above, the word

“powerful communication” refers to the meaning of a relationship which must be

save, because the writing is very important to have the same a role with speaking,

this case strengthens about how to create a good writing so that create a

relationship between the writer and the reader fixed to save.

Writing is uncovering various pattern developing ideas into written.11 From

this statement, it can be concluded that of the ideas found in the mind will be the

material from a script that we write, when we understand and we promote the idea

is to be thought a simple framework to understand by the reader. Pouring idea into

article form, this matter aim to facilitate communications beside communications

verbally. It means that by using writing, we can share our idea, feeling or anything

that exist in our mind.

Ruby Level, Writing and Grammar Communication in Action (2007), New Jersey: Prentice Hall, p.3
11
Trimmon/MC. Crimmon, Writing with a Purpose (1998), U.S.A: Hogton Miflin Company, p.108
In other words, writing is also a medium to pour all that is in the mind,

whether it be ideas, criticism, or suggestions as well. It is also a result of brilliant

ideas; it is not rare to find art in the form of writing, such as poetry, short story or

the other. So, write a very clear role in life, is as a medium that can be used to

pour all sorts of brilliant idea. And from things like this, so many people who use

writing as a tool or a financial media.

2. Process of Writing

Writing as one of productive skill needs a process. Harmer states that

writing process involves a series of steps to follow in producing a finished piece

of writing. There ate four main elements.12

a. Planning

Planning is the arrangement conducted to do something. The planning

stage is important because at this stages lies the ideas of the process of writing.

This may involve making detailed notes.

b. Drafting

Drafting is the process of putting all ideas and thoughts in a piece of

paper which will be in the very rough form. This stage needs an editing for

checking the text.It is assumed as the first version of a piece of writing as a

draft.

c. Editing

The way to revise and improve the first draft is called editing. Editing is

essential part of preparing a piece of writing for public reading or publication.

The many drafts prepared that have been written to be edited or revised. Once

a writer has produced a draft, she or he then usually reads through what she or

12
Jeremy Harmer, How to Teach Writing (2004), Harlow: Pearson Education Limited, p.4
he has written, whether it is ambiguous or confusing. Richards and Willy

stated that in editing, writers check grammar, spelling, punctuation, diction,

sentence structure, and accuracy of supportive textual material such as

quotations, examples and the like.

d. Final Draft

Final draft is the end product of a piece of writing. Once the writer has

edited their draft and has made the changes if any necessary in order to

produce the final draft. This may look considerably different from both of the

original plan and the first draft, because many things perhaps have been

changed in the editing process.

B. Narrative Text

1. The Nature of Narrative Text

According to pardiyono, narrative text is a kind of text that is very

appropriate to tell the activity or past events, which highlight the problems of

experience and resolution with the intention of entertaining and often meant to

give lessons to the reader.13

From the explanation above, can draw the conclusion that is a narrative text

tells an incident that has happened in the past, it can be a legend, history, and

fable.

As brooks and warren says, a narrative tells of a significant conflict, usually

involving human beings, that is resolved in such a way as to imply a comment on

human value, feelings, or attitudes.14

From the teory above it can be conclude that narrative text is a story which

story of an somebody fantasy or past story which is generally figuring in human

13
Pardiyono, Pasti Bisa (2007), Yogyakarta: CV Andi Offset, p.94
14
Beth S. Neman, Writing Effectively (1989), New York: Publisher Inc, p.386
being itself, this narrative text to amuse and often times in intending to give moral

lesson to the reader.

According to tri waratno, narrative text serves as a medium for instructed

the experience of the past. Narrative text talked about event with the word as the

events or the incident took place in the past.15

From defenition above that narrative text tells story to intertain reader or

tell the other party to cvoke and turn on the past.

2. Generic Structure of Narrative Text

The generic structure of narrative text are orientation, squence of events,

resolution and coda.

a. Orientation

Orientation contains the topic of an activity or event that will be narrated

or recounted, while its function is to draw the attention of the reader.

b. Sequence of events

Sequence of events shows the exposure of story about activities or

events in the past in which there are stages of ccoflict – resolution. The

function of narrayion is to entertain (amuse) readers, which is also intended to

give moral lessons.

c. Resolution

Resolution is the text element that contains an exposition of problem

solving (problem solving)

d. Coda

Coda contains concise conclusions with intent to deliver or leave a

message of mora (moral lesson) to readers.16

15
Tri Wiratno, Kiat Menulis Karya Ilmiah dalam Bahasa Inggris (2003), Yogyakarta: Pustaka Pelajar, p.13
From the explanation above it can concluded that when someone want to

write a good paragraph or make a good essay, the sentence must be structured, and

have all elements such as orientation, sequence of events, resolution, and coda.

3. The Types of Narrative Text

According to Primary there are four types of narrative text, as follow:17

a. Myths

Myths is the stories created by ancient people to explain natural

phenomena. The purpose of myths is to provide a fictional explanation for

natural phenomena. Many cultures use myths to explain the world and its

mysteries by handing them down from one generation to the next. Myths can

also pass on cultural, religious or spiritual beliefs and traditions

b. Legends

Legends include hero tales and tall tales. They tell of courageous deeds

of people. There may be some basis in history that support that the characters

were real people, but this can not be proven. The purpose of legend is to

provide information about the way particular people lived, and what they

believed. Legends also help us to reflect on our own lives because they often

deal with issues that are cross-cultural and relevant today.

c. Fairy Tale

Fairy tales as having similar characteristics, but they have been written

more recently and have identifiable authors. Fairy tales were originally

intended for adults and children. They were passed down orally to amuse and

to convey cultural information that influences behaviour, such as where it is

safe to travel and where it is dangerous to go. Fairy tales are found in most

16
17
Primary, The National Strategies (2008), Support for Writing Fiction: Crown, p.12-17
cultures and many derive from the oldest stories ever told. Some modern

fairy tales could be included in the more recently categorised genre of

‘fantasy’.

d. Fables

Fables are tales told to point out a moral. A fable sets out to teach the

reader or listener a lessom they should learn about life. The narrative drives

towards the closing moral statement, the fable’s theme : the early bird gets

the worm, where there’s a will there’s a way, work hard and always plan

ahead for lean times, charity is a virtue. The clear presence of a moral

distinguishes fables from other folk tales.

C. Media

1. The Nature of Media

The media is any tool that can be made in channeling messages in order to

achieve the goal of teaching. In the learning process, the presence of the media has

a very important meaning, because of the lack of clarity in the activity of

conveyed material can be helped by a media as an intermediary. The complexity

of the material to be conveyed to the students can be simplified with the help of

the media.

Media can represent what is less capable teachers say through words or

specific phrases. Even abstractness of materials can be concretized by the

presence of the media in the midst of the learning process. Thus more students

already digest teaching materials with the help of the media among them.

The word of media come from the “latin” language and come from plural

word of “medium’ which in a literal manner is a mediator or companion.18 When

18
Syaiful Bahri Djamarah. Aswan Zain, Strategi Belajar-Mengajar (2006), Jakarta: Third Editions, p.120
media is source learn, hence widely media earn in interpreting with human being,

object, and or conducive event of protege obtain get skill and knowledge.

Unassisted of media, hence difficult lesson materials to in digesting and in

comprehending by each every protege, especially complex or complicated lesson

materials.

The media is any tool which used as a message distributor too achieve the

goal of teaching.19 It can be concluded that the use of tools or media so delivery of

massages within a lesson would be easily achieved, so that the material would

taught easilyy in transferring order to achieve the teaching, especially the teaching

of writing.

Media is everything able to using to submit of the sender message to

receiver of message, and learning media is everable to submit include message of

material to learn someone. 20 The media is also a place to convey educational

messages to the rest of a teacher taught to students, and this is where the role of

the media is in need of teachers to help students assimilate the lessons that have

been conveyed, so that the goal of a learning process can be achieved maximal.

2. Characteristic of Media

In the delivery of learning materials, so is needed the role of the media as a

tool for the delivery of content to students. The media, much tools that can be

used as a teacher aide in the delivery of content to students, the media has a

characteristic that should be noticed.

The media is a tool that is lifeless, and this medium is neutral. 21 The

statement explained that the role of the media to be seen if the teachers proficient

learning to use it in practice. As with Animation Movie, media is very possible for

students to be more open in the increasing of their ideas from the stories contained

there in. And this requires the active role of teachers in its use for delivering

teaching material to the students.

D. Advantages and Disadvantages a Teaching Writing by Animation Movie

1. Advantages

The benefits of media movies in the instructional process is the submission

and explanations, ideas and so on with and without using verbal languages, but it

may be giving the impression. We should be able to direct the interest of people

looking at the movie to get answers to questions that arise in his mind. The movie

must be able to stimulate the participation of the participants that they like to

write about the images they saw, of an image from the movie can be born an

intelligent and careful discussion.

The presence of the media in the middle of the learning process is much

helped students in understanding certain concepts that less able to be explained by

language. The inability of the teacher to explain a material, that is be represented

by the media.

Nana Sudjana (1991) suggested pratical values of medium in teaching is as

follow :

a. With the media to laying the foundation the real to think, because it can

reduce variabelisme.

b. With the media can increase interest and attention of the students to learn.

c. With the media can lay a foundation for the development of learning so that

learning outcomes increased steadily.

d. Providing the real experience and can to grow on their own activities for

students.
e. Growing a thoughts that regular and continuous.

f. To help the growth of thinking and assist in the development language skills.

g. Provide experience that is not easily obtained by other means as well as assist

in the development efficiency and a more complete learning experience.

Study materials will be clearer meaning, so it is more in understanding by the

students, and allow students to master better teaching purposes.

h. The method of teaching will be more varied, not only verbal communication

through the speech of the words by the teacher, so that students do not get

bored and the teacher does not fresh out of power, especially when teachers

teach for each lesson.22

In other words, the medium of movie that is used in the teaching of writing,

can be made in an efficient tool in the delivery of learning materials, so students

have no difficulty in understanding any material conveyed, and students will also

be more receptive to the messages contained in any material learning, because the

media that is real in use and very evident in the teaching practice.

2. Disadvantages

The movie media is not always efficient iff ever used, although in practice

it is always satisfying for the teacher, because the material messages in teaching

can be easily conveyed for the student in understand it, but there are some things

that are still counted disadvantage in teaching practice, especially in movies in the

teaching of writing, such as :

a. Control class which less, so the students are often noisy in the classroom.

22
Syaiful Bahri Djamarah. Aswan Zain, Strategi Belajar...., p.124
b. Students are often negligent when watching (media attention), so the students

often forget about waht they should be development rather than the teaching

media.

c. Because movies which used as the medium is so long in duration, also

enables students to feel tired, and the level focus of their declined, and

d. Most students underestimate of the movie medium.

This is some points which are still considered disadvantage in used by the

movie as media in teaching writing to students, and still an important concern for

all teachers which taught the material to students, especially the writer in

conveying the teaching of writing for the students.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. Research Design

This research using of quantitative research. Quantitative research is process of

collecting data using statistic formula and number of specific data. The quantitative

research is purposed to find out the effect of treatment in both of classes that are

experimental class and control class 23 . In this research it can be concluded that

quantitative research is focus on the effect of using animation movie as media to

increase student’s ability. Especially on their ability in writing the subject about

narrative text.

Besides that according to Suharsimi Arikunto, quantitative is the research

demanded using number, from collecting data and appurtenance of the result24. So it

can be concluded the research design that actually used number of score to know the

effect from the using animation movie as media to increase writing ability in narrative

text the object of the research.

In this research using experimental approach. Experimental research is

research which doing with manner comparing between two classes. That is class

control and class experiment, where in class control writer not teaching material

according to media will be research. In class experiment writer teach the material

according to the media will be research.

According to David Nunan “Experiment is carried out in order to explore the

strength of relationship between variables. It can be concluded that experiment tries to

prove the effect of one variable to another variable”25.

Arikunto states that experiments have one fundamental idea behind them to

test the effect of one or more independent variable or a dependent variable (it is

possible to have more than one dependent variable in experiment) 26 . From this

statement, this research tested the effect of using free writing in teaching writing on

the students writing in narrative text of the students in SMPN 10 Takengon.

B. The Location and Time of Research

1. The Location of Research

The location of research at SMPN 10 Takengon, which located in Aceh

Tengah.

2. The Time of Research

The time of research to gathering some information and data in Takengon

from ...................... until .....................

Suharsimi Ariskunto (2006), Prosedur Penelitian, Jakarta: Rineka Cipta, p.56
C. Source of the Data

There were two classes that the writer used to get the data. The population and

the sample from this research are :

1. Population

Population is a generalization region consisting of object/subjects that have

certain qualities and characteristics set by the researchers to study and take

conclusion27. Andi Supangat saids, population is a group of objective who will be

research as tools and has same characteristics by researcher 28 . It means the

population in this research is object which will be used by the writer is all

students of grade VIII of SMPN 1O Takengon that consist are .....

2. Sample

Sample is part of population which is observed interprets when the number

subject of population29. The sample of this research took from students of VIII

grade. The writer uses proposive sampling because the sample taken from second

years only. The students are derived into two classes they are experimental class

and control class. The experimental class has .... students in VIII1 class and

control has .... students in VIII2 class.

D. Technique of Data Collection

The writer uses some techniques for collecting the data. There are:

1. Observation

Observation is the first process of collecting data, firstly the writer must be

visit the place of research and meet the head master to ask the story of building

the school, after that the writer will meet the English teacher at class VIII in order

27
Sugiyono (2008), Metode Penelitian Kuantitatif dan Kualitatif, Bandung : Alfabeta, p.80

Saifudin Azwar (2007), Metode Penelitian, Yogyakarta : Pustaka Pelajar Offset, p.79
to know the students influence in learning English especially in writing ability, to

make all of information true the writer will enter to that class to do the research

until the writer have all of the needed data.

2. Test

To collect the data the writer using test to get information about students

understanding in writing ability using animation movie as a media. There are two

kinds of test that writer use in this research there are pre-test and post-test.

a. Pre-test

Pre-test is a tool to get the information about students understanding

which is given in order to know student ability before applying the teaching

using animation movie as a media.

b. Post-test

Post-test is given after the writer teaching using animation movie as a

media to students in order to know the students improving the understanding

after doing the research.

E. Research Instruments of Data Collection

1. Observation Sheet

In observation the writer uses list of activity. In observation process, the

writer observed what is happening with students related to English teaching

especially in writing.

2. Test Sheet

a. Pre-test

Pre-test gave to students before teaching writing using animation movie as

a media. This is to know how students ability in writing. Pre-test gave to the
students in the first meeting. The research asks to the students write a narrative

text.

b. Post-test

This is test that the writer gave after pre-test or after the writer teaches to

the students about animation movie as a media. Besides that, the writer also

wants to know the influence of students’ ability in writing using animation

movie as a media.

F. Data Analysis

For the test, the writer uses technique of analysis data with the t-test

formulates :

𝑚𝑥−𝑚𝑦
t=
∑ 𝑥2 + ∑ 𝑦2 1 1
√[ ] [𝑛𝑥+𝑛𝑦]
𝑛𝑥+𝑛𝑦−2

Where: t = the score

mx = the mean score of experimental group

my = the mean score of control group

nx = the number of students at experimental group

ny = the number of students at control group

Ʃx2 = the Standard Derivation score of experimental group

Ʃy2 = the Standard Derivation score of control group

The writer used this formula because this formula is relevant to find the data

that needed to calculate the percentage of student’s responses in teaching writing

narrative text using animation movie as a media. And the writer believes the result of

data accurate and able to show the improvement the ability of students.
G. Criteria of Success

Criteria completeness minimum is the minimun value which must get by

students. Criteria completeness minimum in SMPN 10 Takengon at second grade

especially in English study is ... . It means every students must get value minimal 65

most good is more than 65. If students get value less than 65, so they are not success

or mus do remedial. When students can get high score it means teaching by using

animation movie as media can increase students’ writing ability.
