Scripture Passage / Acts 18:1-11

Bible Story:
Paul had to go to a city called Corinth and teach them about Jesus
Christ. But Corinth was an urban place (like Manila) where people are
not so trusting. Many are critical of new teachings. And because of its
urban nature, they have the “self-made man” image going for them.
Paul got discouraged, but the Lord encouraged him to keep looking
straight ahead. He told Paul not to fear; he gave Paul the strength to
go on.
Paul stayed in Corinth for over a year and went on teaching and
preaching about God. His letter to the church in Corinthians (1 and 2
Corinthians) show us the fruits of his labor.
Paul learned not to quit or give up just because things were not going
well.
Memory Verse: Proverbs 4:25
“Keep looking straight ahead to what is good.”

Hebrews 12:2
“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our
faith; who, for the joy set before him, endured the cross, scorning
its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the Father.”
Object lesson: #1: DISTRACTION IN ACTION
Billy came home, determined to study for his Math long test tomorrow.
He wanted to work extra hard on the word problems because that is
his waterloo. He cannot afford to fail another test, lest he gets a red
mark on his report card.

Even before he reached his house, Makmak, his neighbor, met him
and challenged him to a game of basketball. Never one to back down
on a challenge, Billy accepted, thinking he can squeeze in a little
“recreation time.”

The game lasted for one hour. Billy completely lost track of time.
When he realized how late it was, he rushed home to find that he was
right on time for dinner. His mom prepared his favorite dishes –
hamburgers and fried chicken, with chocolate ice cream for dessert.
He relished his food and spent another hour and a half eating. His
studying all but forgotten.

After dinner, he went to his room, opened the computer and decided to
sneak a peek at his “farm” in Farmville. But he got so preoccupied
with the game that he totally forgot all about his Math long test the next
day.

#2: DERAILED
Just like a train can never veer off track lest it kills all its passengers,
our lives need to stay on track in order to reach our goals. If we want
to grow up with a beautiful life, we need to work toward our goals and
keep our eyes aimed at the prize.

LESSON PLAN

Our destination should be the Lord Jesus Christ. There is nothing

more important than following Him. We need to hear God’s Word and
to do God’s Word to follow Jesus to our destination.

Make up your mind that you’ll be like the train, going in the right
direction, not turning off the track, but heading for the right destination.

Songs: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.

Let us learn to focus our attention on the things that will have lasting
value. If we keep our eyes focused on our goal – Jesus /
Christlikeness / eternal life – we will have lived meaningful lives here
on earth.
