C. Ein bisschen Information:
In German secondary schools (e.g. the Hauptschule, Realschule or Gymnasium) the same
students stay in the same classroom all throughout the school day, and the different teachers
come to them. It would get very confusing having to change classrooms all the time, since
German students do not have the same subjects at the same time every day. The classes (or
classrooms) are numbered, and if there is more than one group of students in the same grade, the
classrooms for that grade also have letters.
In our story, Thomas says that he is in the “11a”, Anita is in the “11b.” That means that both are
in the 11th grade in the same school, but in different rooms. The fact that they are in 11th grade
shows that they are attending a German Gymnasium, since the other two types of German
secondary schools do not go that far.
D. Story
Es ist Samstag. Thomas und Philipp haben eine Party. Thomas redet mit Anita.
Thomas: Hallo, ich bin Thomas.
Anita: Tag, ich heiße Anita. Du gehst in meine Schule, nicht?
Thomas: Ja, ich gehe in die 11a. Und du?
Anita: Ich gehe in die 11b. Woher kommst du?
Thomas: Aus Missouri. Ich mache ein Jahr als Austauschschüler hier.
Ich wohne jetzt mit Philipp Becker.
Anita: Ah. Wie gefällt dir Deutschland?
Thomas: Oh, ganz gut. Philipp und seine Familie sind sehr nett. Die
Schule ist hier anders. Es ist nicht so einfach für mich. Ich verstehe
nicht alles. Aber die Schüler sind in Ordnung.
Anita: Und die Lehrer?
Thomas: Naja, die meisten sind nicht schlecht. Unser Mathelehrer ist blöd, finde ich.
Thomas denkt: Was soll ich sagen? Anita, du bist eine Diebin? Wo sind meine 100 Euro?
Warum hast du das gemacht?
Anita: He, du hörst nicht zu!
Thomas: Oh, Entschuldigung. Was hast du gesagt?
Anita: Möchtest du tanzen? Ich mag diesen Song sehr.
Thomas: Ja, gern. Ich mag Smash Mouth. Und ich finde Linkin Park und Xavier Naidoo gut.
Anita: Oh ja? Ich auch.
Thomas denkt: Anita ist nett. Aber sie ist eine Diebin. Sie hat mein Geld. Warum hat sie das
gemacht?

Info Sheet 8.6 - Music, New
Use this Info Sheet with Flash clip 8.6 - “Music, new.”
8- die Wanderdüne = lit.: the “wandering (walking) dune.” The interviews were done on the
Northern German island of Sylt, where Sabine grew up. A large part of the island consists of
sand, piled up into dunes by the wind and water. The largest dune lies close to the youth hostel
where these teens were staying. Since the prevailing direction of the wind is West, the wind
picks up the sand on the West side of the dune and deposits it on the East side, so that the dune is
moving to the East at the rate of 3-4 feet per year.
