Course Description: 3 credits
Costume Techniques and Wardrobe Practices – emphasis on planning, execution and running of
costume for production (special fee: $51.00)

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to understand:
Shop safety, Hand sewing, Machine sewing, Organizational skills, Fabric dyeing, Mask making,
Basic fabric draping, Pattern drafting, Cutting techniques, Basic millinery charts, Costume plot,
costume history.

Learning Activities
Students will take part in lectures, discussion, and demonstration sessions dealing with costumes and
wardrobe. Students will participate in hands-on costuming activity labs using costuming equipment to
produce various costume pieces. Students will alter, embellish or repair various costume pieces.
Students will produce costume paperwork.

Learning Materials
 No text, but students are responsible for all handouts, online or material posted on Blackboard
 Students are required to bring tools and materials for class and project completion
 Optional supplies: Straight pins, fabric scissors, seam rippers, dress making measuring tape,
tracing wheel with carbon paper, hand sewing needles, pin cushion, supply box, fabric for final
project.

 Cell phones off
 Closed toe shoes
 No eating in the costume shop
Grading & Evaluation
All projects and homework assignments will be graded on a Excellent/ Good/ Meets Requirements/ Did
not meet requirement scale. The students participation in class greatly influences the over all grade of
each project and homework assignment. ALL PROJECTS ARE DUE APRIL 20, 2017 AT 9:30AM

Samples/ homework: 5% each 2 @ 5% = 10%


 Assigned Projects: 10% each 5@ 10% = 50%
 Final Design/ Construction Project: 20%
 Participation and Effort: 20%
Attendance Policy
Attendance is extremely important! If you need to be absent from class for any reason please let me know
ahead of time. Please note that three tardies equals one absence. You may be withdrawn from class if
you have three absences.

SYLLABUS
Per Valencia Policy 4-07 (Academic Progress, Course Attendance and Grades, and Withdrawals), a
student who withdraws from class before the withdrawal deadline of MARCH 31, 2017 will receive a
grade of “W”. A student is not permitted to withdraw after the withdrawal deadline. A faculty member
MAY withdraw a student up to the beginning of the final exam period for violation of the class attendance
policy. A student who is withdrawn by faculty for violation of the class attendance policy will receive a
grade of “W”. Any student who withdraws or is withdrawn from a class during a third or subsequent
attempt in the same course will be assigned a grade of “F”. For a complete policy and procedure

Religious Observance
Please let me know if you need to be absent from class because of a religious/ spiritual holiday. The
student will be responsible for completing the assignment given on the day they were absent.

Homework / Syllabus
Homework is assigned in class. The professor has the right to change the syllabus and course projects as
need be.

- Monster project

January 20th : Finish with Monster Project & start with Bag Project
- Homework: Steam Punk- bring in images that you find intriguing about Steam Punk

January 27th : Bag Project

February 3rd : Continue on Bag Project

February 10th: Continue on Bag Project

February 17th: Steam Punk Hat Project


- Now is the chance to create a character using your hat as a canvas (you can also create a matching outfit
with your vest)
February 24th: Continue with Steam Punk Hat Project

March 3rd: Continue with Steam Punk Hat Project

March 10th: Steam Punk Mask Project

March 17th: SPRING BREAK – You are expected to continue working and or finish your mask
during the break.

March 24th : Steam Punk Vest project

March 31st : Steam Punk Vest Project

April 4th : Continue on Steam Punk Vest Project

April 7th : Continue on Steam Punk Vest Project

April 14th : Continue on Steam Punk Vest Project/ Draping Bonus Class (for those who are finished
with their vest can learn basic draping skills)

April 21st : FINAL CLASS/ Draping /Workshop Day - bring in all unfinished projects to work on in
class (remember all projects are due at the final)

April 28th : ALL PROJECTS ARE DUE AT 9:30AM IN CLASS- If you cannot make the exam please
notify me in advance!!!!!!
