Why Attend?
Insurance is a key feature in construction projects. For example, ‘All Risks’, Professional Indemnity, Public
Liability, Legal Expenses, Delay in Start Up Cover and a host of other insurances can be required or
indemnified on a project.
But how can you be sure you are covered for the eventualities which might arise on a project? What are
the risks if you need to make a claim, and how do you ensure insurance is not invalidated? The process can
be fraught with difficulties and challenges. Ensuring entitlement is not lost and demonstrating entitlement
to claim is crucial to success.
This Masterclass – focussing principally on non-liability covers – will provide you with information on
the many difficulties which clients, developers, contractors and other parties in the construction process
encounter. It will provide you with the tools to present claims effectively and avoid losing the right to claim
under insurance policies, or ending up in costly and time consuming litigation or arbitration.

at Barbican, Bank and St Pauls, the Brewers’ Hall is situated in Aldermanbury
Square between Guildhall and London Wall. The Hall is home to the Brewers’

Paul Reed QC, Head of Chambers, Hardwicke
Paul Reed QC is a leading construction and insurance barrister.
Practising primarily as an advocate he is also highly regarded
for his advisory work. He is regularly instructed in substantial,
complex and sometimes high-profile construction, insurance
and commercial disputes, often raising multi jurisdictional
issues. He acts for leading insurance companies, banks and
construction companies, utility companies, local, regional and
governmental bodies. Paul is known as an approachable and
client focused silk, a team player who gives clear and consistent
advice. Paul is also a post graduate tutor and occasional lecturer
in construction law and arbitration at Kings College and an
experienced mediation advocate who also acts as a commercial
arbitrator and mediator.
Nick Thomas, Senior Partner, Kennedys LLP
Nick, Senior Partner at Kennedys since 1996, is one of the
world’s leading experts in insurance and reinsurance law. Based
at their London office, Nick has advised clients on matters
including property, energy and power generation, contractors
all-risks, DSU, and advance loss of profits claims throughout
the world. He is recommended by Chambers as ‘a magnificently
safe pair of hands for insurance issues’. Nick is a fellow of the
Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, an accredited Mediator, and
a member of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers.
Francis Barber, Director, Cunningham Lindsey
International
Francis is a director at the international firm of loss adjusters
Cunningham Lindsey, with particular expertise in the field
of construction and engineering. A chartered Engineer and
member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Francis has
over 28 years’ experience in engineering and construction
throughout the world. He joined Cunningham Lindsey in
1990, and assists clients in insurance and reinsurance matters
throughout the world.
Steve Briggs, Vice President International Delay Expert
Services, Hill International
Steve, with over 30 years of consulting experience, has
completed over 200 appointments as expert witness on
planning and delay related issues. He has written and presented
a number of articles on delay-related matters such as the
ownership of float, the preparation of standard methods of
programming, and the use of ICT in the preparation of claims.
Steve was also one of the leading protagonists in the ‘Great
Delay Analysis Debate’ held at King’s College in London.

Peter Hirst, Partner, Clyde & Co
Peter is a partner in Clyde & Co’s dispute resolution practice.
He has a wide variety of experience in the area of commercial
litigation, arbitration and also alternative dispute resolution
procedures and strategies. Peter is an accredited CEDR
mediator and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
He leads Clyde Latin American team in London and is a
registered foreign lawyer of the Brazilian Bar (OAB). Peter has
acted in litigation and arbitration in nearly 50 international
jurisdictions, from the Far East, Middle East, Central Asia,
North Africa, US and South America. Peter is described
as “proactive and streetwise” and “an excellent negotiator,
who knows how the industry works” in the latest edition of
Chambers.
David Turner QC, Barrister, 4 New Square
David specialises in commercial insurance and reinsurance,
professional liability and commercial product liability disputes.
He has been described in the Directories as “absolutely
meticulous in everything he does”, and as someone who “it is
much better to have ... on your side in a case”. David’s practice,
both as a junior and now as a silk, has been typically involved
large-scale disputes in the Commercial Court, Chancery
Division, the Technology and Construction Court and overseas.
David is an editor of Jackson & Powell on Professional Liability
and author of the chapter on Professional Indemnity Insurance
in the 6th and (current) 7th editions. David is a member
of COMBAR, Tecbar and the Professional Negligence Bar
Association.
Dr Franco Mastrandrea Senior Vice President,
Hill International
Franco is Senior Vice President at Hill International
with responsibility for Expert Service delivery in the
International region. Franco has over 35 years of experience
in the construction industry. He has acted as Arbitrator
and Adjudicator and given Expert evidence in Court and at
Arbitration in relation to a number of substantial construction
disputes on time, quantity surveying matters and project
management duties and practice.
Tim Challis, Executive Director, Hill International
Tim Challis is an experienced Chartered Quantity Surveyor
with an MSc in Construction Law and Arbitration from Kings
College London, and has a sustained record of achievement
in a variety of roles in both the public and private sectors.
He was instrumental in the success of a radical £2bn private
finance initiative / public-private partnership initiative within
the NHS where he acted as a commercial director, utilising
experience on a range of infrastructure construction projects.
He joined Hill in January 2010 and has since completed five
appointments as Quantum Expert including production of
written expert testimony and oral evidence at Hearing.
