 Statement of Purpose (SOP)
As the name signifies, the Statement of Purpose is your personal
statement about:

• Who you are,

• What you’ve done professionally and academically so far,
• Who or what has been your major influence, and
• Where you plan to take your career from here.

Your SOP is your chance to make

yourself stand out from a crowd of
people with similar educational

Every GRE aspirant works hard to score

high in GRE. But that is often not the
case with SOP. People tend to put off
writing the SOP or essay and delay till
the last minute. They often wind up
with the near-perfect essays found in
admission guidebooks.
 Steps to write a good SOP

Word limit
The length of SOPs is generally specified by the respective university. Mostly
it lies between 500 and 1000 words. If the university does not specify the
world limit, try to keep it within 1000 words. In any case, don’t exceed 1200
words.

Keep it simple
Bold, italics, underlined, unnecessary footers and headers, numerous
highlights and font changes are a no! They hamper readability to a great
extent. Keep it simple, clean, and professional.

Begin with a catchy paragraph

The admissions committee wants to learn about you. They would like to see
you, beyond the numbers and grades. Reveal your personality through your
Statement of Purpose (SOP). The admissions committee reads more than 40
SOPs at a time. Catch their attention with the first few lines. Your SOP is your
first personal contact with the admissions committee. Use it to distinguish
yourself.

Don’t share too much

Avoid providing any personal details that are not asked for. Share data that is
relevant to your MS, for example, talk about your chosen field of study, area
of interest, etc.
 Steps to write a good SOP

Extra-curricular activities
Whether it is sports, theater work, or administrative work at cultural
festivals, mention why you participated in those events and how they helped
in shaping your personality. Make sure you mention the challenges you
overcame and the life lessons/skills you learned.

Co-curricular activities
Major paper publications, presentations, R&D experience, guest lectures,
workshops etc., can provide a boost to your SOP.

No unnecessary flattery
The professors and the faculty members are well aware of the quality of
education they offer. What the university is looking for is to understand
what your aspirations are and what you bring to the table. Remember your
SOP is about describing you and not extolling the virtues of the university
and its faculty!
 Common SOP Mistakes

The problem of delaying :

People tend to put off writing the SOP or
essay and delay till the last minute.
They often wind up with the near-perfect
essays found in admission
guidebooks. After countless sessions,
finding the one distinguishing factor for
your SOP can be very difficult. Not to
mention, struggling through an ocean of
Dos and Don’ts. Then come the first,

I am a working professional with 5 years experience in IT industry. I always aspired to do my higher

studies. So I would like to take forward the experience that I already have and do a course which

business analytics ,since it has management subjects in it ,which I am really interested in.

I wanted to do my MBA as I see that it is better to choose a course which gives a good weight to

During btech I was in the organizing committee of ISTE(it is a student chapter). In my college we
conducted several events under this chapter, here the crucial role I played was that ,I channelized the
way it had to work. I formulated different divisions for organizing the event .which are script making,
anchoring, campaigning, student management, prize and certificate distribution, faculty
coordination. This took of in a great way and we trained our juniors in the same method. The
number actually tripled and they were able to organize it better than us which made me very happy.
in the organization ,as I am senior member in the team ,I trained new members of the team in my
area of expertise and the knowledge transfer is a constant process.

I presented papers during btech on artificial neural networks for enose in the event trance 08 (a
national level student technical symposium) and won second prize.

I did two projects during my btech. 1.automatic room light controller 2.finger print based attendance
system Both are microcontroller based projects. Second one is my main project. In this we got a bio
metric module to authenticate students and calculate attendance based on it. I was the team leader
for the project .We were a batch of four, we had to program, integrate and document the project.

I worked in Sweden for 10 months. I was a part of task force during that tenure where i had team
mates working from Russia, Sweden and America. We had to coordinate and had to arrive on a
common solution.

I would like to mention how i got inspired to study management subjects. I realized that I was good
at management ,when I was in college ,when i was an organizer and volunteer .Also, I strongly

thermal capacity and so a steel chimney was chosen above all other types.

My undergraduate thesis project was entitled Schedule Optimization of

Construction Projects using Location Based Management System(LBMS). In
this project, a schedule of a residential project using Critical Path Method
and Location Based Management Concept, was prepared. The two
techniques were hence compared and optimized using a mathematical
model named Analytical Hierarchical Process by determining the consistency
ratios.

The final conclusion was that the LBMS technique is indeed a more suitable
technique for scheduling, as it combines similar locations where activities
could be started and advanced concurrently. Hence saving a lot of time as
compared to the CPM technique, where resources need to be dedicated to
different activities.

The choice to pursue a career in Business Analytics after completing my

undergraduate studies in Engineering was a result of my desire to be part of

As part of my internship at Larsen and Tubro (UAE), I worked on insightful

projects to develop Data Analytics tools as a part of a two member Software
Development team. We developed applications for generating Crystal
reports, and a tool that works hand-in-hand with the PI System to archive
data and display live-time reports and trends.

These were designed to analyze data in real time and so, were crucial for the
field teams to generate insights into the utility of their cooling plants. The
tools were also to play an instrumental role in the development of strategies
for new plants and reduce operational and manufacturing cost.

For our Thesis project, my team implemented JIT Model to optimize the
stock reserves for an existing assembly line following Kanban and simulate
worst-case scenarios including Delivery Delays. The tool will be useful in
taking decisions on contingency measures. We developed a simulation tool
that uses matrices resulting from a Stochastic Timed Petri Net model of the
assembly line to perform the simulation.

My internship at the Telecommunication major Bharti Airtel provided insights

into the LINUX system, server security and server error monitoring that
helped me understand the application of technology for data management.
The internship at Think LABS Techno solutions Helped me understand mega
microcontrollers and also apply my skills in programming to write
sophisticated codes for microcontrollers.

After completing the UG program, intending to pursue a career in structured

decision making, I joined Mu Sigma Business Solutions, a pioneer in Decision
Sciences. Over the last year at Mu Sigma, I had the opportunity to learn
about real-time data driven decision making. Initially, I received training in
analytic technology such as SAS, R and SQL and learnt the nuances of
problem solving. I created a repository of business problems across various

In the project for a leading US insurance company, we segmented customers
product differentiation and cross selling decisions. We also segregate loyal
customers and detractors to help marketing decisions. In a project for a
pharmaceutical company, we worked on Behavioral Segmentation of the
different accounts and physicians for deciding upon an effective marketing
program to launch of a Bio-similar drug and also study its effect on the
market associated to its generic drug. In another project, we designed and
developed a Quick view Dashboard for the client organization to manage
their sales force and for the sales personnel to understand different aspects
of their performance. At present, I am automating their report generation
system in an effort to save costs.

From my experience in the Business Analytics industry, I foresee automation

to be major area for investment by companies in an effort to increase
efficiency and increased process accuracy. It is imperative to allow this by
