UNIT 1: THE UNIVERSE

CELESTIAL BODIES IN THE UNIVERSE

* Star huge ball of gas. Nuclear reactions produce light and heat.

form groups called constellations, making imaginary shapes.

* Galaxy enormous system of stars, dust and gas held together by the gravity.

Three shapes: spiral, eliptical, irregular.

Milky way is where our solar system is.

U
  * Solar system is made up of:
N
+ Huge ball made up of gas (hydrogen and hellium) in the centre of the Solar
I   System.
  - Sun
V   + Two movements: rotation and revolution

E
+ Inner: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars  solid, rocky surface, warm and small.
R
  - Planets + Outer: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune  made up of gases, cold, dark.
S
  Do not emit light.
E
- Asteroid  rocky irregular mass that orbit the Sun (found in the asteroid belt and the Kuiper
belt)

- Meteoroids  small pieces of rock or metal from an asteroid or comet. When they pass
through Earth´s atmosphere (burning) is a meteor. Meteors hitting Earth´s
surface are meteorits.

- Comet  made of ice, dust and gases. It has a nucleus, a coma and a bright tail.

- Natural satellites  called moons, orbit some of the planets.

UNIT 1: THE UNIVERSE

EARTH the only planet where life has been found

75 % of the surface  water.

It rotates on its axis.

- Rotation It takes 24 hours.

It gives us day and night.

Two movements
It orbits the Sun.

- Revolution It takes 365 and 6 hours.

It gives us the seasons.

- Earth´s natural satellite

- Four times smaller that Earth.

- Rotation and revolution take about 28 days.

- No air or atmosphere.

THE MOON - It has craters and mountains on its surface.

- It doesn´t produce its own light.

- Four phases: first quarter, full moon, last quarter, new moon.

- Its gravity creates tides (changes in sea level)
