What was your career path to
Beauty Public Relations?
At 16 I did work experience
in a very small Public Rela-
tions office in my home-
town and absolutely loved
it! I was determined to get a de-
gree that gave me hands on expe-
rience and that made me
‘employable’ immediately after
graduation. With three A Levels
in English, French and Psychol-
ogy I was often advised by teach-
ers to pursue a degree in a ‘pure’
subject like English. Worried that
I would leave university still not
knowing what I really wanted to
do, I decided to go down the vo-
cational route and so went to
Bournemouth University to study
for a BA in Public Relations. The
third year of the course was a
compulsory year’s work experi-
ence in a press office and after in-
terviewing, I accepted the role of
PR Intern at a large international
brand renowned for its prestige
skincare. It
was this year
working in a
small team
of three that
ignited my
passion for
the Beauty
world (the
products
and the peo-
ple), and my
love of PR
and commu-
nications.
Even though it was hard to drag
myself away, I went back to uni-
versity for my final year and two
days after finishing my final
exam, I was lucky enough to start
a new job as a PR Assistant in an
extremely busy press office for an
international consumer beauty
brand. A year and a half later, I
now look after the PR and Corpo-
rate Comms for one of the UK’s
largest duty-free chains WDF pro-
moting its 90 stores, the category
of airport shopping and the fan-
tastic travel exclusive products
across all categories, including
Beauty.
Can you explain what the role of a
Press Officer is?
Ultimately, the role of a Press Of-
ficer is to promote the
brand/product/service you repre-
sent through the local, national
and international media – online,
in writing, on the radio and on
TV. We are often also providing
advice to all staff on media mat-
ters, always monitoring and eval-
uating press coverage, supporting
departmental and corporate
events and occasionally manag-
ing crisis communications.
In my opinion, the role of a press
officer is predominantly one of
service provision. I believe it’s
crucial to work in a ‘journalist-
first’ culture and to provide what
is needed – whether that’s press
releases, images, prices, inter-
views, quotes, etc - in a timely
and professional manner. I never
forget that journalism is a dead-
line driven profession and if I
can’t provide what’s needed in a
timely manner, there are plenty of
other people who can! This is es-
pecially true in the highly com-
petitive beauty world. A good
Press Officer needs to be avail-
able, well informed and helpful at
all times.
A large part of being a Press Offi-
cer is relationship building – with
journalists of course, but also with
suppliers, retailers and even other
brands. PRs are often seen as the
‘face’ of the company we work
for, an ‘ambassador’ – so it really
helps if you believe in what
you’re representing.
