GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

ELECTRICAL AREA CLASSIFICATION 6810-A

5.0 TYPICAL CLASSIFICATION

5.1 IEC 79 shall be used to determine minimum requirement of area classification.

5.2 When designing area classification, consider the problem of transient vapors
from hazardous sources. Further area classification is required to cover these
conditions.
5.3 Mixtures of gases of different groups may be involved, or sources of both
heavier-than-air and lighter-than-air gases may exist within an area. In
classifying such areas, all of the following apply:

(a) Upon release, gas mixtures are considered to separate immediately

into their separate gases. If the separate gases are of different groups,
use electrical equipment within each classified area suitable for all the
groups involved.

(b) In mixtures of Group C and D gases per IEC, the Group C gases are
disregarded if they constitute 30% or less by volume of the mixture.

(c) In areas which are adequately ventilated and have lighter-than-air

vapors, the hydrogen in a gas mixture is disregarded if it constitutes
30% or less by volume of the gas mixture.

6.0 ELECTRICAL FITTINGS AND ACCESSORIES

6.1 Class 1, Zone 1 Areas

The following covers the requirements governing electrical fittings and

accessories for use in Class 1, Zone 1 areas.

• Rigid conduit
• Flexible conduit
• Fittings
• Seals
• Enclosures
• Lighting fixtures
• Plugs and receptacles

6.1.1 Rigid Conduit

ELECTRICAL AREA CLASSIFICATION 6810-A

6.1.2 Flexible Conduit

Flexible conduits must be explosion-proof, IEC-approved and so labeled.

Flexible conduits are used to provide flexibility at motors, light fixtures, valve
operators, meters, and other similar in-line end devices and control equipment
mounted on lines and vessels.

6.1.3 Fittings

Fittings are cast Feraloy, having external threads with cap type covers. All
fittings are IEC approved and so labeled. Fittings may have internal threads if
the cover does not reduce the space within the box.

6.1.4 Seals

6.1.4.1 Seals are cast Ferrule, IEC-approved and so labeled.

6.1.4.2 Seals are installed in the following cases:

• Where conduit enters an enclosure that houses arcing or high temperature

equipment.
• Where conduit enters enclosures that house terminal splices or taps, if the
conduit is 2 inches or more in diameter.
• Where the conduit leaves the classified area.
• Where underground conduits enter or leave the ground.
• At the floor or grade for all conduits entering a building from underground
there are no boxes, fittings, or couplings between the seal and 500 mm
below grade.

6.1.4.3 Where in-line instruments or similar end devices are connected by conduit to a
control room, the following applies:

• At the point of area classification change from hazardous to non-

hazardous install two back-to-back mounted seals. The seal nearest the
end device is installed facing downwards with the plug removed. The other
seal is installed in the normal manner. The purpose of this is to relieve any
pressure build-up which may occur inside the conduit.

6.1.5 Enclosures

All enclosures must be explosion-proof, cast Ferrule construction, IEC-

approved and so labeled.

6.1.6 Lighting Fixtures

All lighting fixtures must be explosion-proof, IEC-approved and so labeled.

6.1.7 Plugs and Receptacles

Plugs and receptacles are cast Ferrule construction, IEC-approved and so

labeled; and conform to one of the following types:

• Interlocked

Receptacle contacts are interlocked with a switch located in an explosion-

proof enclosure. Receptacle contacts will always be dead when the plug is
inserted or withdrawn.

• Delayed Action

Plug and receptacle are so constructed that any electrical arcs that may
occur at the contacts will be confined inside explosion-proof chambers.
This design also prevents the rapid withdrawal of the plug from the
receptacle; thereby giving any heated metal parts or particles time to cool
before they come in contact with the surrounding explosive atmosphere
(when adding new facilities to an existing installation ensure that the new
receptacles match the existing).

6.2 Class I Zone 2 Areas

The following covers the requirements governing electrical fittings and

accessories for use in Class 1, Zone 2 areas:

• Rigid conduit
• Flexible conduit
• Fittings
• Seals
• Enclosures
• Lighting fixtures
• Plugs and receptacles
• Purging/pressurizing systems
• Ventilating air
• Types of equipment
• TECK cable

conduits are used only in the cases stated previously under Class 1, Zone 1
areas.

6.2.3 Fittings

Fittings are cast Ferrule, Form 8, with solid neoprene gaskets, IEC approved
and so labeled.

6.2.4 Seals

Seals are specified as per Class 1, Zone 1 areas.

6.2.5 Enclosures

Where arcing devices are contained inside of an enclosure, the enclosure

must be explosion-proof. Where enclosures are used for termination of wires,
splices, etc., the enclosures must be increased safety ‘e’ construction. All
enclosures are IEC approved and so labeled.

6.2.6 Lighting Fixtures

All lighting fixtures are the enclosed and gasketted (vapor tight) type, IEC-
approved and so labeled for the area classification.

6.2.7 Plugs and Receptacles

Plugs and receptacles are specified as per Class 1, Zone 1.

6.2.8 Purging/Pressurizing Systems

6.2.8.1 Purging/pressurizing systems permit the safe operation of electrical equipment

under conditions of hazard for which approved equipment may not be
commercially available.

6.2.8.2 Purging/pressurizing systems, must be approved by the OWNER and are

6.2.9 Ventilating Air

Ventilating air for buildings or enclosures (whose area classification is

improved by means of artificial or pressure ventilation, ventilating or
pressurizing air) is obtained from a point at least 3 m above grade, 3 m from
the nearest Zone 1 area, and 3 m above the roof of a building restricting free
air movement. Particular attention must be given to location relative to safety
valves and other vents. If the classification improvement is to "non-
hazardous", the point at which air is obtained is to be in a non-hazardous area;
not above a lighter-than-air classified area. These systems must be approved
by the OWNER.

6.2.10 Types of Equipment

6.2.10.1 Arcing and sparking equipment shall not be used in hazardous locations
without OWNER’s written approval.

6.2.10.2 Where reference is made to intrinsically safe equipment, the complete system
must be intrinsically safe, not just the individual devices or equipment.
