a.

Follow the instructions to construct an empirical discrete probability distribution for the
player scores on the twelfth hole, using Excel.
1. Open data file.
2. Select any cell (A1:A444).
3. Click Insert on the Ribbon.
4. In the Tables group, click PivotTable.
5. When the Create PivotTable dialog box appears;
Click OK; a PivotTable and PivotTable Fields dialog box appear in a new
work sheet.
6. In the PivotTable Fields dialog box;
Drag Hole 12 Score to the Rows area.
Drag Hole 12 Score to the Values area. Sheet 1 display a pivot table
containing the categories of Hole 12 score and corresponding counts.

To compute the frequency for category 3, type =B4/B10 in cell number C4. Copy cell C4
to C5:C9. The following table gives the empirical discrete probability distribution.

Figure 5a-17E discrete probability distribution.

b.

Add the probabilities corresponding to x  3, 4 . This would give the probability that a
player scoring less than or equal to par on hole number 12.

The required probability is as follows:

P( x  4)  P( x  3)  P( x  4)
= 0.005096+0.096815
= 0.101911

Therefore, the required answer is: 0.101911 .

c.

Use =SUMPRODUCT function to compute the mean score for hole number 12. The
instructions are as follows:
1. Type =SUMPRODUCT(B4:B9, C4:C9) in cell numbered B12 to compute the
mean. The screen shot is as follows:

Figure 5c-9E expected score for hole number 12.

Figure 5c-19E shows the expected score for hole number 12 in highlighted cell.

Therefore, the required answer is: 810.2033 .

d.

Use the following instructions to compute the variance for hole number 12.
1. Compute square deviation from mean for each of the values in column A. Type
=(A4-B12)^2 in cell number D4, to compute square deviation from mean for cell
A4. Copy the formula until D9.
2. Type =SUMPRODUCT(D2:D9, C2:C9) in cell number B13 to compute variance.
The screen shot is as follows:
Figure 5d-17E variance for hole number 12.

Therefore, the required answer is: 647631.3065 .

e.

Use the following instruction to compute the standard deviation.

1. Type =SQRT(B13) to compute standard deviation. The screen shot is as follows:

Figure 5e-17E standard deviation.

Figure 5e-17E shows the standard deviation in the highlighted cell.

Therefore, the required answer is: 804.756 .
