Structure: Reported speech
Aims: Ss will practise reported statements and questions and will
develop their speaking skills
Objectives: By the end of the lesson Ss will:
 recognize patterns of reported speech
 use correctly the verbs in reported speech
 make the necessary transformations from direct to reported speech
Assumptions:
Ss have already been exposed to English tenses and they will not
encounter many problems when reporting
Anticipated problems:
Some Ss will forget the difference between the word order of direct
questions and reported questions
Aids: Textbook,handouts, notebooks,video tape,etc.

Activity 1.
Warmer

Aims: to greet Ss, to make the presence, to appreciate Ss’ work


Timing: 7 minutes
Class management: Individual work

Procedure: the student on duty tells the absentees; T writes the
absentees in the register, then she checks homework and Ss correct the
mistakes, if necessary. Then the T divides the class into four groups.

Activity 2.
Lead-in

Aims: to stir Ss’ curiosity, to motivate Ss by involving them into the


presentation of the new topic
Timing: 7 minutes

Procedure: The teacher asks a student what time she/he gets up and
then she transforms the sentence into indirect speech, without specifying
exactly what she did.
Example: Q: What time do you get up?

A: I get up at 8 o’clock.
The teacher reports to the students: Your classmate said he got up at 8 o’
clock.

Activity 3.
Presentation

Aims: to raise students’ awareness of the transformations involved in


indirect speech
to develop students’ ability to recognize different tenses
Timing: 10 minutes

Procedure: T writes on the blackboard the changes between direct and
reported speech.

Activity 4.
Practice

Aims: to provide Ss’ with a suitable context to understand the new


structure and to practise it.

Procedure: Ss watch a movie segment to assess grammar reported
speech and in groups they have to report some lines .

Aims: to use the tenses correctly in indirect speech

Assigning Homework

Aims: to give Ss further practice on the new structure to make students


use their previous knowledge

acquired structure
