Business/Organisational Ethics

Introduction

Behaviour is a major concern for business organisation. Ethics guide one on their daily

conduct within the workplace. I have learned a number of ethical factors that have guided my

interactions in the business environment. This paper focuses on my learning experience in the

workplace as I interacted with others.

Code of Personal Ethics

I have learnt ethical code based on the utilitarian and consequence-based ethical

frameworks that I have used to guide my behaviour in life and business. Ethical decision making

becomes complicated in certain situations and requires a rational approach with a trade-off

between action-based and consequence-based ethics (Colson, 2007). My objective has been to

create an ethical framework model against a backdrop of competing interests. As I continue to

test these tenets against time and experience, I will continue to refine the guidelines and

examples below.

Areas where I have been good at

Truth-telling

I have never lied in business matters. This is mainly because I want to avoid any blame

that may be put on me in case of organisational problems. I have always been honest,

straightforward, and frank with those around me.

Killing, harm and preventing harm

BUSINESS/ORGANISATIONAL ETHICS 3

I have never initiated any harm or physical violence towards my colleagues in the

workplace. I usually use the force that I would have used for self-defence in escaping a situation

that will likely cause harm or death. I would only use force for self-defence in cases that are

absolutely critical for me to escape (Howard & Korver, 2008).

Stealing

I have never taken any business property without permission in the name of stealing. I

will not take advantage of generosity or autonomy offered by my employer to embezzle

organisation’s property.

Reproductive issues

I am a believer that stem cell research is absolutely ethical. I support abortions as long as

they are justified with a valid reasoning behind such decisions. I have never engaged in engaging

in romantic relationships with co-workers (Pride, Hughes, & Kapoor, 2009).

Conclusion

In summary, this paper has focused on ethical codes that have guided me in the

workplace. These codes help one to keep off trouble when dealing with business operations. The

main codes are in terms of truth-telling, killing, harm and preventing harm, stealing and

reproductive issues
