Working with School-age Children
Marlene Bumgarner
2016

Synthesis:

A practical look at the roles of adults in children's lives outside of the classroom

through the experiences of real people in a wide variety of settings and with a

diversity of needs and insights, this book helps to define the role of professional child

and youth workers in the lives of children and families.

Working with School-Age Children builds on a foundation of child development

theory and provides an historical overview of the subject and an overview of school-

age care in other parts of the world to help ground the work done by the people

represented in the book.

The book describes the issues children face in today's world and the attributes and

skills critical for people who work with school-age children. Included are strategies

for adult involvement, healthy and productive activities, and guidelines for

developing and sustaining afterschool programs.

Critical Points

This practical introduction combines child development theory with issues

pertinent to out-of-school care for children and youth. It is the first text to provide in-

depth coverage of all the major program concerns of care providers, including

professional issues in out-of-school child and youth care, developmental theories,

social and emotional needs, characteristics of the environment of after-school care,

programming, activities and curriculum, family and community involvement, and

program involvement and accreditation.

Analysis

Working with School-Age Children examines the role of adults in children's lives

outside of the classroom. It offers guidance for adult staff as they interact with

children during out-of-school time.

Building on a foundation of child development theory, the author explores the

importance of quality and the characteristics of effective programs and individuals

who can best meet children's needs. The text contains strategies for adult

involvement, healthy and productive activities, and guidelines for developing and

sustaining afterschool programs.

Personal Perspective

In my personal opinion this book discusses some groundbreaking issues of the

realities that children are not always at school and education does stop at school.

School-age program staff and afterschool teachers will find this book a valuable

resource for becoming involved in children's lives outside of school, and for

providing the best possible environments for children.
